A line of scantily-clad gay boys chain pass a bottle of poppers, then prance into the waves like background extras in an Esther Williams production. Trans masculine boys beam elatedly as they peel off their shirt, revealing fresh chest scars; years of physical and emotional weight finally released from their bodies. A cacophony of bouncing beats emit from tents with Dominican, Puerto Rican, and Colombian flags, battling for prominence. A handsome dark-skinned black man with 8-pack abs hands over a laminated cocktail menu. Sun-kissed legs intertwine, sand gets under swimsuits as lips and tongues tango. A group of friends giggle sharing greasy cheeseburgers and fries as salty as the Atlantic.

The rhythmic hum of crashing waves hypnotizes me into a blissed reverie. I wake up from a snooze. The evening sun grew as large as a trans girl’s newly-minted breasts. It casts a deep golden shimmer over the waves that picked up their crash landing. Tension escalates. A group drunk from a mix of too much sun, too many Nutcrackers, and too little food start fighting. Hair pulled. Glass bottles crashed. Others look on with a half-wilted cigarette and raised eyebrow.

It’s time to go. We wait for the Q35. The artery that connects the beach to Brooklyn and Queens. The floor dusted with scattered bits of sand. We dazedly meander from the bus’ last stop to the shuttle. The shortened train waits for passengers to load, ready to bring us back into reality. It runs raised on an elevated track; looking out the windows—over seaside homes—waves continue their Siren call, singing its memory of bliss, chaos, and sublimity. The track veers left. Through the other side, the blistering orange sun silhouettes the skyline far on the horizon. Glistening reflections of the sun ripple across Broad Channel. Both window views are filled with the imbued navy of water. Egrets rustle through the reeds, wings cast wide, mirroring the 747s taking off and landing at nearby JFK. 

The doors open. Bewildered international travelers — dragging suitcases bursting at the seams — confusedly eye the passengers with scantily-clad red & pink skin, salt-dried hair. The A lurches on. More working-class New Yorkers board the train, then we descend back underground. 

The ant-swarm bustle of New York builds as we get deeper into the city. I'm happy. For a moment, the stress releases its grip from my mind and a wave of calm keeps me at ease.

Based in the Bay Area, @aunteesam of Club Pansy got their start DJing relatively recently. With their storytelling background as a filmmaker/editor and their strong sense for what it means to get lost in the emotions of a dancefloor, it feels like they could have been DJing for years. Viewing music as a universal language, their mixes are jubilant and connective — this is music for smiling at your neighbor through the fog, for uplifting one another, for heading home with a full heart and a changed mind.

"Music to smize to. As a filmmaker/editor by day, I really enjoy storytelling, evoking feeling, and creating a sense of warmth through the art. It’s not a perfect story, but it has a beginning, an arc, and a resolution.

This mix is bright, has some tight hugs of acid, and groovy bass lines to get your feet kickin’. I’m sharing music that combines my love of dancing and feeling sanguine - This mix is full of tunes that please my soul. I recorded this using an XDJ-RX2 and some studio monitors."
