A year end present for everyone!

2014 led Blue Hawaii around the world. Over multiple visits to Russia, China/SE Asia, Mexico, Japan, Europe and the US, it felt like everything was coming up opposite Untogether, the album we made. Instead of being secluded in a Montreal apartment writing a fragmented break-up record, we were travelling vast distances, rediscovering each other as close friends and tying together radically different cultures. Our music came to reflect that. Live, everything sounded more together and higher energy than the record in an effort to find common ground with all those different audiences. 

It's the end of the year, so to commemorate the global underground touring we did— to all the people who were interested in coming to and putting on a Blue Hawaii show in Bangkok or Vilnius— we decided to put together a free mixtape of edits —  somewhere between the dreamy record and the banging live show. 

In 2015, Ra will focus on her other band, BRAIDS, who have just completed a beautiful, deeply emotional, new record which I am very excited to see come into the world. I will use what I’ve learnt this year DJing and roaming the earth to produce more music this winter —  planning on releasing material in a similar vein to this mixtape and hitting SXSW this March as DJ Blue Hawaii.. holding down the fort until Ra and I can record another album…   something 4 y’all to look forward to! ---;)  Agor (the boy in Blue Hawaii)

There are no liner notes, essays or books that could ever really put just how vast the influence of John Coltrane is. Maybe a multiple-tome encyclopedia. Maybe. 

These liner notes will be no such attempt towards that. However, with this brand new mix conceptualized by Colectivo Futuro’s Miguel Colmenares, and with John Coltrane’s birthday coming up (September 23rd. Day of an equinox), maybe we can process a few ideas as to why he has become such an icon for so many all over the globe.

Biography:

A lot of music listening and a creation : "HoneyBox" started in 2001 when me and my teenage friends broke our alternative rock band. I left my electric guitar and decided to work on solo with an old Roland keyboard that my step father had at home. It even had integrated floppy disks ! Few months later, I bought a Yamaha hardware sequencer, started to experiment and created my first electronic tracks. The world of electronic music opened to me a wide range of dreams and music gender defining was never easy. In 2005, moving from my hometown Brussels to London was a big and inspiring change... I studied Sound Design and started to build soundscapes for films and scenography projects, creating, editing and mixing sounds with a computer based equipment. Simutenaously, I played improvisations of my tracks with my sequencer in various public spaces.

Getting to the point : Today : My material : a 19 year old hardware sequencer, an old Syquest floppy disks for my data, a 30 year old spanish acoustic guitar... along with my voice in French, Spanish or English... A recent computer to record, and everything sounds "contemporaneous"-:) My style : learning from gigs to gigs, improvisation, creating music "in the moment". My today's leitmotive : Taking the maximum advantage of what I have NOW.
