SPA was founded in 2018 in Cologne and is focusing on club music with a global perspective. The label is run by Salon des Amateurs resident Phillip Jondo, France 98 aka DJ Brom and Friday Dunard who put in their different musical backgrounds and influences together, ranging from Baroque choir music to high definition experiences. For their monthly show on NTS they reflect on current moods, play the labels output and invite artists around them.

@gadgetandthecloud is Kelly Doherty, a producer and DJ from Cork and based in London. She has previously performed at Electric Picnic, Open Ear and Body & Soul and supported acts including Gus Dapperton, Neggy Gemmy, Saint Sister and Dan Deacon. She also runs a monthly show on Threads Radio and is co-founder of queer Irish London-based club night Satellite Towns. Her DJ sets veer between breakbeats and experimentalism, hip-hop and pop.

This is how she described her mix to us - "this week is the 20th anniversary of the first electronic album I ever fell in love with – The Postal Service's Give Up. For this mix, I tried to imagine a late-night soundtrack for the protagonist of my favourite track off the album, "The District Sleeps Alone Tonight". It's a moody and squelchy and lonesome mix but leaves space to dance, just like the song that inspired it. Featuring cuts from Aphex Twin, Otik, Khotin, Drexciya, Two Shell and, of course, The Postal Service"

Since blazing into the spotlight in 2012 aged fourteen, the Yorkshire-born producer and experimenter Happa has made a habit of ripping apart his own artistic rulebook, pressing into exciting audio territories by setting fire to what came before. Before his critical acclaim and collaborations with artists like David Byrne, FKA Twigs and Chloe x Halle, Happa aka Samir Alikhanizadeh was a sports-loving kid who grew up thirty minutes outside Leeds among the Yorkshire dales, raised by a Northern Soul-loving Mancunian mother, and a father who arrived in Britain in the 1970s having fled the Iranian revolution.

Here he shares a few words with Baesianz… 

If the selection you brought together in this Baesianz mix was telling a story, what story would it tell?

This mix tells the story of an introspective and ethnographic journey into the SWANA music from the perspective of a British / Iranian who’s never left Europe. Put together with a focus on traditional and experimental sounds, this was an opportunity for me to discover lots of new music and artists from that region of the world (and part of it’s diaspora).

How does your Iranian heritage influence your sound?

The first musical connection with Iran I noticed was my love for triplet swing - specifically of drums & percussion - which is very present in a lot of traditional and pop music from Iran, some of which I grew up listening to. It could just be a coincidence though! In the last couple of years I’ve been listening to a lot more Iranian classical & folk music, which lead to me attempting to create music using the classical tuning systems of Iran aka. Dastgah - big emphasis on the “attempting”, it’s early days but I’m excited to try more. I’ve also started to use a lot of that music as source material for sampling, through working with amazing artists Lafawndah and Maral as well as within my own stuff.

D'anu is a DJ from Galway playing jungle, breakbeats, footwork and bass. Over the last two years she has played at nights across Galway, and made several appearances at Evolution in Cork and Bow Lane and Wigwam in Dublin, as well as at EP and All Together Now festivals.

Elö has been music researcher & party enthusiast for over 15 years. She is from a suburb area of Curitiba, Brazil and is now based in Dublin. In 2018, she began her DJ career, developing two projects simultaneously. One totally focused in Psychedelic Trance and other on an open-format basis, where all ways of feeling are explored, mixing multicultural music styles, contemplating mostly Afro-Brazilian beats, house, disco and trance. 

In the last 2 years, In Ireland, she has been playing & supporting the Brazilian/Latin cultural movements: Cacao & Ecstatic Dance events,SoulNight, Tropicalista Galway, Cantito, Space__Mango, ArtMov, Epiphany, TRP.raveparties.  Currently, she is involved in the organisation of Crystal Queer Club (LGBTQI+ collective) and is member of the bateria group, Morro16 samba.

This mix is a blending of eclectic influences that transcend and fuse musical genres like house, Brazilian funk and trance. It represents a glimpse of the vibrant multicultural music production worldwide with a big Latin American touch.
