Solid Steel in association with Serato (31st August) 3 years ago Solid Steel DJs Cheeba, Moneyshot and Food had the idea of collaborating on a version of the Beastie Boys‘ ‘Paul’s Boutique’ album made entirely from the original sample sources, shortly after Moneyshot aired his mix of their ‘Check Your Head’ album in the same way. 

Finally the result is here, titled ‘Caught In The Middle Of A 3-Way Mix’ - each of them have taken a third of the album to work on and combined their efforts into a mix that will make you hear it in a new way. Aside from the original sample sources they’ve included commentary from the Beasties, vintage interviews, demo versions and much more.

The mix was over half way completed when they heard the tragic news of MCA‘s death in May so the impetus to finish it was instantly doubled and new meaning given to the project. It goes without saying that this is also a tribute to Adam Yauch and the legacy he left behind and we hope it will be embraced by Beastie fans around the globe.

3 years in the making, 3 DJs working with over 150 tracks to recreate one of the seminal sampling albums of all time. Cheeba, Moneyshot and I bring you ‘Caught In The Middle Of A 3-Way Mix’, our tribute to the classic Beastie Boys album ‘Paul’s Boutique’. Remixed and re-imagined from all the original samples plus a cappellas, period interviews and the Beasties’ own audio commentary from the reissued release.

Add to this a custom illustration from Paul’s Boutique super-fan and all-round great guy Jim Mahfood, and you have an alternate version of the album. The mix was over half way finished when we heard the tragic news of Adam Yauch‘s passing this May so this is also our nod to his memory, RIP MCA.

Big respect to Cheeba and Moneyshot for all their hard work and for the latter for inspiring the project with his classic mix of their ‘Check Your Head’ three years ago. Obviously massive respect goes out to The Beasties, The Dust Brothers, Mario C. and all involved in the making of the original album.

As half of the Toronto underground house duo ”StretchandHooker", I enjoyed a front row seat for the rise of dance music in North America. 
I started my rave career selling glowsticks and mixtapes at X-Static booths followed by Herbal E booths at parties in 1994. I joined a group of friends and we started throwing parties in Toronto  under "Dose Productions"(Dose was a T shirt company that Stretch and his partner Chris had created and were selling out of Chris's van at parties). 

Once exposed to the music the wanting to collect house/techno/breaks records was quickly followed by the need to DJ.
Sometime early in 1994 on High St in Barrie, sitting on my living room couch, facing the turntables/speakers blaring from across the room and the TV on in the opposite corner, I suddenly had my Dirk Diggler moment, my future DJ name flashed in front of me…..DJ Hooker. 

As the rave scene grew so did the opportunities as my partners  Steve, Aaron, Rob and Tyler and I went on to produce all LifeForce Industries, Dose, Syrous and Renegades events as well as being co owners of Turbo niteclub. (Jason and Ashley for the first LF event) 

Playing as a resident DJ for Dose parties led to residencies at some of Toronto’s staple underground clubs, System soundbar, Turbo niteclub, Element along with events ranging from 50 person Warehouse jams up to 18,000 person mega raves. 

 At first Steve and I put our DJ names together( StretchandHooker)so that we would only take up one DJ slot at Dose parties.This turned out to be a blessing for me because the Stretch before the Hooker masked some of the rediculousness of the name. 

 Over the last few years i have been able to replace and update some equipment while slowly dig through my vinyl and organize my digital collection. These mixes are a collage of genres, bringing a familiar sound together with current House/Breaks/Techno that will include the usual dose of crackles, glitches and nudges that come with live recordings, snapshot of that day for me.
