The song reflects the element of frustration when both parties in a courtship have difficulty communicating the true depth of their feelings. This track deals with the subjects of emotional labor and balance in a relationship.

This sprawling power ballad explores deep friction in a romantic relationship. "Baseboards" encapsulates the frustration that can be experienced when someone who was socialized to please is not getting much in return from the person they're involved with. Briana Marela (appearing courtesy of Jagjaguwar Records) delivers a nearly-a-capella drone outro where she relates an isolating intimacy: “You hold me / in a way that / pushes me / away.”

From Caitlin Roberts, lyricist: "I was working at a kayak tour agency as the main office person, and I was in the office alone most of the time. Sometimes I was more than a logistics coordinator -- I was also an in-situ therapist for the often-lonely transients of the outdoor recreation industry. 

'To Know Your Tone' is about the power of asking for support and receiving support, and what it's like to listen deeply to someone you don't know very well but empathize with strongly. It's about allowing tears to fall on the desert of isolation."
