The Back Story
I came in to our L.A. studio one afternoon and my Tpuss partner had created a new dirty house loop. It sounded very ‘Defected’ & ’Subliminal’ (record labels). If memory serves me correct i believe he also played in the rhodes piano as well. I was immediately inspired to go down that feel good Sunday morning (or evenings) dirty house route. David Henny & I had gone to see Danny Teneglia more than a few times when he had his Body & Soul night at Vinyl NYC in those days. Around the same time i also had my apartment in Brooklyn and travelled quite frequently from L.A. - NYC 2000-2005 ish. I wanted to take this root idea and create something that i felt Danny Teneglia might play for his Sunday night, which is why i titled it “Body & Soul” mix.
We worked together on this as i added in the bass, playing & recording it live. Some of this bass was later looped, some wasn’t. We then took turns on creating the mix from there. As usual we only actually worked together on the beginning and end of a mix. We’d go back and forth on our own, taking over where the other left off and would build the mix that way until we both felt it was done and ready to mix down together. My Tpuss partner added a few guitar embellishments and fx, and i added in the pretty ’spacey' new synth part, otherwise the mix itself was/is quite simple.
I believe this mix was made well after we had delivered the previous approved mixes to Caresse Henry (Madonna’s manager at the time) so we didn’t even bother to submit it for consideration. I think we just did this mix for fun and i never thought much of it again. I never played it out very often even at the time.
Listening back now in 2017, i’m quite proud of this mix and think it sounds pretty good and actually with 20 year cycles and ‘what’s old is new again’, this actually sounds kinda 2017 dirty houseish. I’m surprised to be honest.
