We are very excited to premiere the sublime and calming sounds of "Horizon" by Turn On The Sunlight, a duo formed by composer and multi-instrumentalist Jesse Peterson, and close friend and collaborator, Carlos Niño, music producer, percussionist, arranger and much more besides. 

Taken from new album, 'Drives To The Beach' on Madrid's Tokonoma Records "Horizon" also features the incredible Mia Doi Todd on vocals, and multi-instrumentalist, mystic traveller and New York native, Pablo Calogero, on saxophones, flutes and bass clarinet.

Carlos and Jesse describe their work as "Textural sound reflections, communicating our enthusiastic, diverse relationship with nature. The Earth, woven from improvised patterns, forming the fabric of composition". Among each other's closest friends, Jesse Peterson and Carlos Niño sonically painted land, sea and skyscapes, for Pablo Calogero to tell impressionist stories over, full of questions and answers about the many experiences and adventures in life.

Centered around the vast variety of instruments and inspirations that songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, producer Jesse Peterson collects and enjoys, Turn On The Sunlight formed in New York in 2007, when his friend Carlos Niño was visiting and the two decided to make a record. They brought together songs that Peterson had been working on and soundscapes that Niño was making, with new, on the spot compositions and collage explorations. First contributing to Carlos Niño & Friends' debut record ‘High With A Little Help From’ in 2009, they released their self-titled debut in 2010. Remixes and compilation contributions followed. 

Incorporating diverse recording and mixing methods with a rotating cast centered around Peterson and Niño, and their friends and families (most notably Niño collaborator and Peterson's Wife Mia Doi Todd), Turn On The Sunlight presents a range of musical expression that includes children's songs, deep ambient waves, improvisational recordings, ocean and forest inspired tropical ballads, beat experiments, and more. All unique in sound and energy, while also all kindred and complimentary, Turn On The Sunlight further released ‘New Day’ in 2013, and ‘Warm Waves’ in 2020, featuring Jamael Dean, Sam Gendel & Laraaji. Now, in 2021, they share ‘Drives To The Beach; featuring multi-reedsman, composer and mystic Pablo Calogero.

‘Drives To The Beach’ started as improvisations by Peterson (and Niño) recorded in Niño's home studio, during their first post-lockdown meeting on September 16, 2020. Niño excerpted and edited sections of this session that Peterson then wrote to and recorded on from his home studio. That was then passed back to Niño for more additions, editing and mixing. They would listen to the progress while in the car, driving to Zuma Beach for swims. 

Recently heard with LA's Cosmic Vibrations ensemble, fronted by Dwight Trible, not only has Pablo Calogero worked with everyone in Latin, spiritual and free jazz, from Tito Puente to Phil Ranelin and Yusef Lateef, but he also contributed to the soundtrack for Basquiat’s seminal ‘Downtown 81’ film, alongside Liquid Liquid, The Lounge Lizards, and Basquiat’s own “Gray” outfit.

We could write an essay on Carlos Niño’s career, music and achievements, but in brief, he made a massive impact on the global radio landscape with his soundways show and was a founding host on Dublab. Furthermore, he has been a part of numerous groups and projects, with a massive influence both locally and internationally, among them Build An Ark, Ammoncontact (Ninja Tune), The Life Force Trio, and with Miguel Atwood Fergusion he reinterpreted J Dilla’s music in  a contemporary chamber music style on ‘Suite for Ma Dukes’. As Carlos Niño & Friends, and in collaboration with Miguel Atwood-Ferguson he has continued to share deep and transcendental musical offerings. 

An essential deep listen, ‘Driven To The Beach’ represents the next chapter in Carlos Niño and Jesse Peterson’s musical journey.

Turn On The Sunlight ft. Mia Doi Todd & Pablo Calogero "Horizon" (Tokonoma Records)

1988 is the third single to be taken from the forthcoming Westbound EP by accomplished multi-instrumentalist and producer Alexander IV, otherwise known as Joris Feiertag. This latest sobriquet has allowed the Dutch beatmaker to move away from his more club focused offerings, to explore his hip hop, soul and jazz roots. 

All of these influences are present and correct in 1988 with its boom-bap drums, ethereal vocal samples, loose guitars, strident percussion and haunting synths. Add some dubbed out horns plus atmospheric spoken word and you’ve traveled back some thirty five years to what might now be considered a simpler time. 

The track fuses organic and electronic elements with ease, which isn’t surprising given the artist’s experience not only as a consummate dance music maker, but also as drummer of choice for Dutch superstars Kraak & Smaak. Add to that an extended family of gifted musicians, and you’ve got something brand new yet retro; uncomplicated yet masterful.

Welcome to the 2nd Volume of the Jazz Room series compiled by DJ legend and label owner Paul Murphy.

Following on from the success of the original Jazz Room compilation released by BBE in 2019 Paul has compiled a double vinyl volume of Jazz dance tracks that range from heavy funk of New Orleans to Latin grooves and contemporary jazz from the new generation.
Tracks written by Dizzy Gillespie sit with those from the musical pens of Raul Monsalve and Fela Kuti.

Paul's own label, Jazz Room Records, specialises in re-issues and it is his expertise in finding the rare and the obscure and matching with the new and the fresh that creates the joy filled atmosphere on this compilation.

This album really is as much for the party people as it it for the headz and links the audiences from his legendary gigs in the 1970s and 80s at the Electric Ballroom, 100 Club and The Blue Note to those at his current appearances at Spiritland, Shiftless Shuffle and
Brilliant Corners.

Indeed, among the rarities and the global rhythms in this collection are some excellent cover versions of tracks from the aforementioned Fela Kuti, The Stranglers, Azymuth and The Human League (yes, The Human League). What Paul Murphy has done here is compile a selection of tracks that could easily be a DJ club set, a soundtrack to a party, a Summer festival highlight or a night of music appreciation with a favourite tipple and partner.

The Jazz Room Volume 2 is a must have compilation and, along with Volume 1, is a masterpiece of music curation.

Raúl Monsalve Y Los Forajidos - Black & Decker

Immy Owusu’s debut LP LO-LIFE! draws on the work of West African giants such as Ebo Taylor and William Onyeabor as well as psychedelic troubadors like Rodriguez. Immy’s sound, which he describes as “lo-fi highlife” is a synthesis of his Ghanaian roots and his own experiences growing up in coastal Australia. 

Immanuel Kwabena Dreessens-Owusu grew up in two worlds: the sea bleached lifestyle of the Australian Surf Coast with its rock n roll soundtrack, and the musical heritage of his Ghanaian / Dutch family. Immy’s father Kojo Noah Owusu is one of Australia’s best regarded West African musicians and his grandfather Koo Nimo is a legend of Ghanaian Highlife and Palm Wine music active since the 1960s. From them Immy learned Asanti music and its instruments, added a fuzz pedal and began to experiment.

LO-LIFE! was live-tracked with an all-star band, featuring members of Surprise Chef, Karate Boogaloo and The Senegambian Jazz Band. Immy’s voice, singing in both English and Twi, is commanding throughout the record while the band weaves its magic around him. Immy’s delicate fingerpicked electric guitar dances around, anchored by Lachlan Stuckey’s hypnotic riffs on the second guitar, Henry Jenkins’ pulsing bass and Julius Sackey’s deft drums. Jethro Curtin’s quirky monosynth leads take center stage when Immy isn’t leading and Kojo blesses the sessions with Kpanlogo drum rhythms, Akan drum appellations and a rambunctious talking drum overdubs that interject and comment throughout. The final touch is provided by the powerful backing vocals of Kuukua Acquah, Pia Nesvara, Izzy Adjei and Julius Sackey. 

From the opening fanfare of Appellation Of Elevation, the album grows through the kaleidoscopic Afro Disco of Flashback and the hypnotic Holy Shoulders, reaching a crescendo with the choir led The World Is Here For You and the simmering highlife groove of What A Love. The second half of the record favours longer songs where the band can stretch out, with the rolling 6/8 groove of Sunsum Dware, 'Take Five meets Afro-Rock' Nyame Kasa and the afrobeat inspired Right With No Wrong rounding out the album before the delicate epilogue provided by Palm Wine Elixir pays tribute to Immy’s family’s roots. 

Immy’s previous releases on Hopestreet Mantra and Brown Supremacy, received rave reviews and substantial airplay around the world including on BBC6, Worldwide FM, NTS, KEXP, Bandcamp Weekly and more and was included in mixes and playlists by Dangermouse among others. This album takes Immy’s creative process out of the computer and into a live format and showcases a new side to his sound. LO-LIFE! is available everywhere on July 14th through Hopestreet recordings on LP and online.

'Vestibule' and 'A Mere Subjective Experience' open the doors to a new voyage called 'Ravine', courtesy of The Incognito Traveller. This time around the music takes an introspective twist and looks within to discover what lies beneath the skin, beyond all exterior definitions and right into the deepest definition of self. Through proper jazz-infused trip-hop, 'Vestibule' and 'A Mere Subjective Experience' unveil unexplored interior spaces and beautifully complex inner worlds.
Milton Erickson’s “A Special Inquiry with Aldous Huxley into the Nature and Character of Various States of Consciousness” serves as the conceptual basis for a whole album’s worth of cinematic jazz explorations. In the study Aldous Huxley is guided into a deep hypnosis and, in such state, he describes meeting with his own self at different ages and revisiting his own stages of growth and intellectual development. 'Vestibule' and 'A Mere Subjective Experience' reference closely two specific instants in the author’s recount of the experience.
Eyes closed, the listener gets easily carried away within, into a grand voyage of self-discovery and inner aperture. 'Vestibule' is a classic jazz/trip- hop piece with an imposing break and uplifting release to bring illumination to the spirit; whereas uptempo quasi-freejazz piece 'A Mere Subjective Experience' offers internal divine light and harmony for the soul.

XOA, led by London based producer and musician Nick Tyson, is set to release debut album ‘Way West’ on 14th June via Five Easy Pieces.

XOA means to look outwards; to draw inspiration from many sources. ‘Way West’ is alive with this: steeped in the rich analogue sonics of the past, the warmth of machines and influence from the sounds of London’s fervent music scene. Featuring a blend of contemporary electronic production and live instrumentation, 70s Afrobeat inspired drums and cosmic melodies are thrust into the present day with strong cues from house and techno.

Three vocalists contribute across the album, with Tyson choosing to work with singers he has a personal admiration and friendship with. Hollie Cook, known to many for her ethereal pop tinged reggae, delivers a sumptuous contribution on ‘Heartland’, adding a beautiful emotional dimension to the horn led track. Lulu Jones’ vocals are treated more as a sample for the garage tinged ‘Call On Me’ and Ruby Wood, of Submotion Orchestra, has worked with Tyson over a number of projects and their shared love of 90s soul comes to the fore on the laid back grooves and sun kissed ‘Only One Thing’. 

“When collaborating, especially with vocalists on melodic and lyrical ideas, it’s important to have that personal connection and respect for each other’s craft. That’s why I never ask vocalists to prepare anything in advance for the tracks, I like to get in the room and just see what happens in the moment, to trust each other’s ideas, and for it to be a natural, organic and spontaneous process”.

Collaboration has always been at the heart of the project for Tyson. He plays the bulk of the instruments on the album but invites Marijus Aleksa on drums to provide live energy, extra synth work from Parisian Kenzo Zurzolo, and a notable Rhodes solo from Johnny Tomlinson (a member of Bonobo’s live band) on ‘Osu’.

After well received releases on Soundway Records, Cin Cin (with Wayward) and Banana Hill (with Contours); ‘Way West’ shows another step up for Tyson as a writer and producer. 

“It feels like this project is coming alive for me, the music I envisaged in my mind a few years ago is being realised, and I’m proud of how it sounds”.

‘Way West’ is set to be released on 14th June 2019 via London based label Five Easy Pieces (Mo Kolours, Reginald Omas Mamode IV, Natureboy Flako, Royalty, Call Super) on vinyl LP and digital formats.

Worldwide Award winners First Word Records are pleased to welcome back Souleance; a duo that have been releasing music with us for a decade now, and triumphantly returning to the fold with some brand new music for 2020.

Expanding on the original Normand-Parisian super-duo of Fulgeance and Soulist, the Souleance crew now includes Vincent Choquet on synths and Guillaume Rossel on drums as part of their live outfit. Whilst sonically their style remains unchanged, the formation into a full band sees the Souleance sound become bigger, more realised and more formidable than ever.

The title track 'Les Mouches' sets off the EP in a playful disco manner - a chugging bassline, assorted synthesisers, disco claps and a four-to-the-floor drum track, inspired by the likes of Larry Levan and Candido. Meaning "flies", Les Mouches was a legendary Manhattan club that existed around the era of Studio 54, and was infamously a hangout spot for Imelda Marcos. The club itself was named after a play by Jean-Paul Sartre.
