The Bombay Royale are a Melbourne band dedicated to honoring and reviving the funky, bizarre and mysterious music of vintage Indian cinema. Dusting off near-unheard relics, smashing out Bollywood classics and putting down surfadelic Hindi originals is all in a day’s work for The Bombay Royale. This band brings the sound of the Golden Age of Bollywood back to the future, where it belongs.

The cinema of 1960’s and 1970’s India was a riot of saturated color and dramatic excess. Far from the polish and shine of modern Bollywood, an ingenious industry was forging a new nation’s identity, cannibalizing every aspect of world cinema and remaking it. An all singing, all dancing, all funky subcontinental style never before imagined. The soundtracks followed suit. Every possible influence from surf rock to disco was absorbed and recombined with a uniquely Indian sensibility. The heroes of this music rank among the great musicians of the 20th century. R.D Burman, Asha Bhosle and Mohammed Rafi are still household names in India, but largely unknown in the outside world. The Bombay Royale is here to rectify the situation.

Starring vocalists Parvin “The Mysterious Lady” Singh and Shourov “The Tiger” Bhattacharya and led by musical director Andy “The Skipper” Williamson, The Bombay Royale are an uncanny crew of masked marauders. Session pirates hauled from various crews unite to assault the senses with pulsing tablas, hot brass, shimmering spaghetti guitar and sitar, screaming organs and driving bass and drums. Not to mention analog synthesizers, spring reverb, tape echo and occasionally elephants, monkeys and tigers.

Sote Sote Adhi Raat. If you like Bollywood space disco, this song is for you. Literally translated as “each night I open my eyes,” Sote Sote features the haunting vocals of Parvyn “The Mysterious Lady” Singh. This cosmic love song originally appeared on the soundtrack to the film Siskeyan and was composed by Sapan Jagmohan. The update on this little heard tune is arranged by Andy Williamson and produced by Bob Knob and Tristan Ludowyk in the Hope Street studio.

Solla Solla Enna Perumai features the mighty vocals of Shourov “The Tiger” Bhattacharya. Originally appearing in the film Ella Inba Mayam and composed by Ilaiyaraaja, Solla Solla is a stormer, careering wildly through the jungle on a hyperactive rhythm section and scattered with epic brass and hot guitars. No animals were harmed in the recording of this song, but it was close.

Darvid Thor unveils new single “Anything”, the fourth cut from his debut mini-album I’m Never Really Here, out March 1. Driven by eerie synths, dark fuzzy bass and filtered drums that float with an uneasy intensity, Darvid’s lyrics muse on perspective and letting go.

Thor says of the track, “I wanted to consider positives and lessons learnt from a particular experience, instead of dwelling on how it was bringing me down. That was the best way to move forward”.

Recorded and performed alone by Darvid, “Anything” is the latest cut from his debut mini-album I’m Never Really Here, out March 1. At times anxious and quietly anguished, tender and candid, these are songs about a growing-up, a breakup, and everything in between. “Do It Again” & “Rest of Your Life” reveal a more straight-ahead dream-pop style, with “Get Out” showing a darker inner monologue;

A sweet melancholy of jangly guitars and warbled synthesizers that have afforded support from Beach Fossils, Danger Mouse, Double J, Triple J Unearthed and Indie Shuffle to name a few. You might also recognise him from alt-soul group The Cactus Channel. Live, Darvid expands his setup to a four-piece band including Lewis Coleman, Levi Heeringa & Hugh Rabinovici.

The Putbacks - Melbourne’s heaviest funk rhythm section - bring you a twisted and electric collaboration with the legendary Bilal on their new single The Ways. A dark, dirty post-soul post-jazz mystery-cinema freakout dominated by screaming electric guitar and Bilal’s husky stream of consciousness lyrics. Produced by Paul Bender (Hiatus Kaiyote), The Ways is a hard-hitting, abstract journey into an alternate reality where The Meters specialised in Sci-Fi soundtrack art and Dick Dale played guitar on Madlib records. The Ways is the first single from The Putbacks’ self-titled debut LP coming November 9.

The Putbacks are a rhythm section. Drums, bass, guitar, keyboards and percussion. Stone cold pros, grizzled veterans of all the tours and all the studios. They take their cues from the great house bands of the 60s and 70s soul studios as film composers from David Axelrod and Lalo Schifrin to Adrian Younge and contemporary instrumental groups like BADBADNOTGOOD, Khruangbin and El Michels Affair. Known for their instrumental 7inch funk cuts and their collaboration with Emma Donovan, the forthcoming LP marks their first album as a quintet.

Bilal has been a household name amongst soul aficionados since he was an integral member of the Soulquarians collective – a movement that launched his career alongside those of Questlove, Erykah Badu and D’Angelo and whose influence is still strongly felt. Bilal is a mercurial and diverse artist, noted for his wide vocal range, his resistance to being typecast and his working across multiple genres, The Ways being a prime example. Bilal’s discography is studded with stellar collaborations including Kendrick Lamar, Common, Jay-Z, Beyoncé, Guru, J Dilla, Robert Glasper and The Roots, amongst many others.

"I just wanted to remember the day I decided to share this music, I wrote this and how I was feeling.

Other worlds, Other Sounds... it reminded me that music was always this to me: a traveling vehicle, escaping, dreaming, shifting my mood... meditating on these sounds it's a bittersweet feeling, like I thought I should make a fun mix, I thought, it should be a celebratory, joyful feeling and it's so hard to bring myself to be content with just that. It needs to be connecting me with the rest of the world and what we are going through, spiritually.

Not being from Australia and having family overseas didn't allow me to ignore the doors of apocalypses, so here you have something to look inwards."
