Leuven's nacht resident & promotor Kuba'97 played the very first records of Horst Arts & Music 2021 at the No One Is An Island stage. Seamlessly combining vibrant house tracks with the occasional progressive rollers and breaks, he set the tone for what rapidly turned out to be many devoted clubbers’ favorite hidey-hole.

On Saturday, Karla Böhm provided a top drawer warm-up set at the No One Is An Island stage. Confidently bringing her signature afterhours sound, she made it hard to grasp whether you entered a club that had just opened or were lost in a hazy warehouse in which a bunch of dedicated dancers had already been going for a day or two.

Gay Haze's finest Fais Le Beau & Vieira at Horst Arts & Music 2021 was nothing short of pure delight: a haze filled room, high beats per minute and lots, lots of sweat. Effortlessly raising the energy to unseen levels, the duo proved why they’re the widely celebrated faces of one of Brussels’ most iconic queer parties.

On the final Festival day, a flock of inquisitive listeners gathered early at Rotor’s Unglued stage. They were all ears for ‘Searching For The Body’, a Horst initiated talk in collaboration with KU Leuven.

The core of ‘Searching For The Body’ revolved from the notion (and urgency) of nightlife for societal health as well as human interaction. Despite having to miss it for a sometimes unbearably long period of time, its absence did seem to trigger a lot of reflection, new initiatives and creativity. 

We invited Serbian/Dutch artist, researcher and curator Bogomir Doringer who is doing an Artistic Research PhD at the University of Applied Arts Vienna, and the by Beyoncé-approved choreographer & dancer Nick Coutsier. They are joined by ’Flying On The Raven’s Wing’ Exhibition participating artist Daan Gielis and Canadian/Polish coreographer and performer Ula Sickle, who is currently a PhD researcher at KU Leuven.

The four, all coming from different backgrounds, were brought together by curator Evelyn Simons to reflect about their own practices while relating their research to the subject matter of the talk.

On the very first Festival day of Horst Arts & Music Festival 2022, Australian duo Sleep D galvanized the Hovering Caress Amère stage with a mind-altering live set. Surrouned by a flock of devoted early ravers, the Butter Sessions founders made it crystal clear why they are at the very front of the progressive house and techno revival. Fast-paced rhythms, refind drum programming and alleviating melodies, all tied together with profound technical finesse.

Longtime Horst resident DTM Funk gloriously manifested his position as one of Belgium’s most in-demand and versatile DJ’s around. Soundtracking the sunkissed Friday afternoon at Bodies In Alliance, the SannKofa Rhythms founder pleasantly guided an elated crowd through his eclectic record collection, ranging from percussion-driven groovers to soulful latin records & undiscovered soul gems.

“I normally don’t get to play that fast from the get go but the crowd was so great it felt easy to play literally everything. It felt a bit like a wind tunnel in there. The shape of the stage, the whirling in and out of different tempos and the crowd’s energy made up for the perfect environment to play nothing but fast and half time rollers.”

This year at Horst we introduced Collective Care, a harm reduction and community care programme to make the festival a supportive and welcoming place for all. Perhaps you saw the team in pink vests during the weekend, or even sought them out yourself in a difficult moment.

Collective Care also included a dedicated restorative space, for which we commissioned a series of mixes from DJs with a keen understanding of nurturing sound: Russell E.L. Butler, Alex Rita, and Lou Drago.
