Who wants this much love? It's bad for you. Hard work is more important than love, thinks Gary Scoops, who is unemployed, because Joanna Abdul took his seat, and didn't look him in the eye at the vote count. She was too busy being happy she won.

Gary Scoops sucks harder on his gay rainbow straw, trying to drown out Joanna Abdul's voice, but the words seep in anyway. His convictions feel hollow, like a hastily scribbled note on the back of a napkin. A napkin someone lent him.

The gay frog juice spurts into his brain, giving him bad thoughts. Gary Scoops doesn't need this confusion. Gary Scoops needs structure, clear lines, someone to tell him where he stands.

A man wearing makeup in a neon tutu spins past, his laughter echoing in Gary Scoops' ears, threatening his static existence.

A strange, alien pang. A memory surfaces: that hot summer day in Year 11, a secret kiss behind the cricket pavilion.
