In February 2012, a group of Tulsa musicians came together for 10 days at the legendary Church Studio in Tulsa, OK to share each others' spirit of collaboration and community.  Much like their highly revered and deeply respected predecessors and originators of the Tulsa Sound, this family of artists exudes a similar, unique musical quality that continues to pour from this place.  This recording documents the fellowship that was experienced at those sessions.  It was a magical moment in time with smiles, laughter, and even tears of joy and fulfillment.  They hope you feel some of that same love and spirit and pass it on.  Peace from Tulsa.

Credit Paul Benjaman for carrying on that fabled Tulsa musical heritage, the ‘Tulsa Sound’, courtesy of a career that’s found him and his namesake outfit, the Paul Benjaman Band, releasing an ongoing series of highly acclaimed albums that continue to indelibly inscribe his imprint on that unique and signature sound.  With his new album, the wryly titled My Bad Side Wants a Good Time, Paul and company further expound upon the groove-laden approach that remains so essential to Tulsa’s revered traditions, while mixing in dashes of grittier rock n’ roll muscle. The album was recorded in the restored environs of The Church Studio in Tulsa, the former home of Shelter Records once owned and operated by Leon Russell. A full listen will take you on a journey of diverse sounds once heard in the glory days of rock n roll and roots radio.

Christmas Tears - STEVE PRYOR

In February 2020, a group of Tulsa musicians traveled to Leon Russell’s famed Paradise Studio at Grand Lake to record the first album tracked there since 1978.  Tulsan Rick Huskey has spent the last 30 years preserving and restoring the space, honoring its history while preparing for a new chapter.  The narrow, winding road one must travel to reach the compound provided time for reflection.  Some of the biggest names in the history of music traveled the same path years before.  That realization was both inspiring and daunting.  Entering the studio for the first time, the musicians were awestruck.  Decades later, the vibe is still alive.  Seventeen tracks were recorded over the course of four days – mostly live, with very few overdubs.  While there was a core group of players throughout the session, a grand total of 20 Tulsa musicians participated in the recording.  The Oklahoma songs chosen for the album represent the famous to the obscure, and everything in-between.  This recording honors those who came before and made it possible for Tulsa musicians to have an identity and a music scene today.  Thank you to Leon for blazing a trail and building this lake palace.  Thank you to all of the Oklahoma musicians over the years who have been role models through their authenticity and spirit of community.  This record is dedicated to them. I’LL MAKE LOVE TO YOU ANYTIME – Written by JJ Cale.  Released in 1979 on the album 5 on Shelter Records.  5 was the first album to feature Cale’s wife, Christine Lakeland.  Eric Clapton also recorded (covered?) this song on his album Backless.  The definition of cool, Cale is one of the most influential Tulsa musicians to have ever lived.  His music continues to inspire musicians and fans alike.

I'll Make Love To You Anytime (JJ Cale) - PAUL BENJAMAN

Jakob was conceived by Cody Bailey in the early 1990’s originally. It was by force of nature that a musically repressed Cody was driven to create something that had meaning and a strong musical foundation, artistically.

After a few songs were written and recorded by Cody while touring in Florida he brought the material to me back home in Oklahoma and we would spend the next decade collaborating and kicking out tunes and playing shows to support the music that became JAKOB.

Jakob was more of a studio project for Cody and I. Once the songs were written and we thought we had enough material we would form a band to perform the music live. There was somewhat of a revolving door when it came to members and live performances. Jakob’s live performers are many and I wanted to write this article to give a shout out to those who have given themselves to this project at one time or another.
