Drum & bass doesn’t get more soulful than when Makoto is at the controls, and he’s upped the bar yet again with his highly anticipated ‘Spread Love (feat. Pete Simpson)’ cover, which is finally seeing the light of day alongside the B-side and atmospheric masterpiece ‘Contact’. Hailing legendary status as a founding member of the drum & bass culture in his home city of Tokyo, Japan, Hospital Records proudly present the latest hit release from Makoto.

Written by Garry Glenn and originally performed by Al Hudson & The Soul Partners in the 1970s, Lenny Fontana then covered the upbeat classic in 1999 and introduced it to the world of dance music with his house rendition. The infamous Nu:Tone remix came in 2010, and eleven years later Makoto and Pete Simpson have stepped up to offer their euphoric cover as they beautifully tie together all of the aforementioned versions into a feel-good future classic that will send ripples throughout the drum & bass community for generations to come. With a complete recreation of the entire instrumentation including freshly recorded strings, guitars, backing vocals and Pete Simpson tearing up the lead vocal, Makoto’s 2021 version is a truly phenomenal body of work which has been crafted with the utmost precision and delicacy. This release comes armed with both the original and extended versions.

Ethereal in vibe and floaty in nature, ‘Contact’ is the musical embodiment which portrays Makoto’s unfathomed ability to weave together an array of sounds and styles that lay together perfectly. Transfixing bongo loops, old-school rave inspired vocal cuts and pads so uplifting they’ll transport you to cloud nine are infused amongst splashy amen breaks and a sinister modulated reese bassline. 

With ‘Spread Love’ already garnering support from pinnacle figures including DJ Marky and Nu:Tone, Makoto’s contribution to the world of drum & bass is second to none. The caliber of his music has turned the heads of tastemakers since the days of LTJ Bukem’s Good Looking Records, not forgetting to mention the output of his very own Human Elements imprint. With a discography packed with countless liquid-soul classics including ‘Golden Girl’ featuring MC Conrad as well as two albums under his belt on Hospital, ‘Spread Love / Contact’ is a stellar addition to Makoto’s flawless discography.

This time we have a new pilot and whole new team of navigators: Evabee, TMNMS, Alto Sounds. New names to some, but not for much longer. If you’ve heard any of LSB and DRS’s sets in the last year, you’ll already know what they’re capable of. 

One song, three versions. ‘Unconditional’ is presented in three distinct ways by Manny’s leading cosmic cosmonauts. A stirring breakdown of what love can be when it’s honest and real, ‘Unconditional’ is written, sung and lead from the front by Evabee. Produced by two of her closest co-pilots Alto Sounds and TMNMS, it follows a select series of Evabee explorations both solo and as part of the collective A Broken Camarilla. Well known on the city’s live community, you might recognise her yearning, dreamy realness from collaborations with Tommy Tickle, Inka’s ‘Waveydon Ballads’ or her own self-released soul-massaging ‘Full Circle’ earlier this year. ‘Unconditional’ is her full official debut. 

The first incarnation is the DNB Remix. Beats crafted by Alto Sounds and TMNMS, Eva’s spacious delivery is given all the room it needs to hit home. Disarming, faraway, hopeful, universal, her emotional delivery brings you close in, heightened by DRS’s bars mid-way. Pure rolling food for the soul. 

It’s followed by the Hip-Hop Remix. Taking off where Space Cadet left us with DRS’s critically acclaimed guerrilla-dropped From The Deep album last January, once again Alto Sounds and TMNMS’s beats hit with a warm, authentic heat. Soft keys, slouching beats, bags of space for the delicately woven vocal lines from Evabee and DRS, it captures of the essence and soul of the city each of the creative individuals involved call home. 

The last significant bit comes courtesy of LSB. Mentored and deeply inspired by Marcus Intalex, a Space Cadet lieutenant since time and one of Delroy’s closest creative partners, Luke Beavon adds his touch to the original with a star-gazing remix that’s already turned heads across the drum & bass spectrum. Continuing the theme and vibes of their recent album ‘The Blue Hour’, the duo’s rolling sense of restraint and subtleties are felt deep in every detail. Recently captured on video at drum & bass spiritual HQ Sun And Bass, where Evabee performed the song live, it’s a classic dubplate story with many, many chapters left to be written…

This is what Space Cadet is all about. A discipline that runs deep in the code; celebrating the music, giving it time and space to breathe and making sure the coordinates are always set for the future generation and giving new talent their own rocket packs to fly freely. DRS’s years of grafting, connecting and rallying up the Northern troops can be seen and felt in the pulse of Manchester from everyone who’s graduated from Estate Recordings to the stratospheric prominence of Children Of Zeus. Space Cadet is the latest embodiment of Delroy’s dedication. And they’re only just warming up.

It’s no surprise that such a huge milestone is supported by an impeccable selection of tracks with unique collaborations that span across the Hospital family. You’ll find brand new collaborations from S.P.Y x London Elektricity with Liane Caroll, Bop x Subwave x Degs, Makoto x Urbandawn with MC Conrad, Whiney x Mitekiss with Ruth Royall, Fred V x Logistics and Keeno x Polaris. With NHS400 marking a seminal milestone in the Hospital Records catalogue, what better way to celebrate the talent that constantly propels the label forward than with a special six-track EP to explore the ever-developing sounds of the label’s roster.

Hospital head-honcho London Elektricity teams up with fellow long-time comrade S.P.Y on ‘Find Another Fool’ featuring the award-winning jazz vocalist and multi-instrumentalist Liane Carroll, who is no stranger to adding her flair to drum & bass with her rich history at the label and her involvement on countless Hospital Records classics. The introduction will have your hairs standing on end as S.P.Y’s signature reese bass comes tearing in underneath eerie plucks and Liane’s dynamic vocal range.

Russian-based, minimalistic beat smiths Bop x Subwave join forces with one of the most distinct voices in drum & bass on ‘The Shade’. Degs uses the delicately crafted canvas from Bop x Subwave to convey his eternally important message of continuing to spread love and kindness despite the racial injustices and discrimination he’s faced. A remarkable collaboration with an indispensable meaning.

Makoto and Urbandawn roll back to the 90s with ‘Magic Eyes’ featuring the vocals of MC Conrad, a leading figure within drum & bass and a true pioneer of MC culture. Expect a euphoric hands-in-the-air piano breakdown that sets the tone before Urbandawn’s grizzly bass work drives the track into full-throttle energy mode.

‘Broken Bones (feat. Ruth Royall)’ sees the debut collaboration of Whiney and Mitekiss. They offer their majestic take on drum & bass with spacious synth pads, sublime saxophone riffs and the soulful vocals of Ruth Royall, all meticulously blended together into a solemn liquid roller.

Seeing through another first-time collaboration on the NHS400 project, Fred V and Logistics take no prisoners on ‘You Keep Me High’ which sees the combination of both Hospital stalwart’s styles infuse into a gritty banger drenched in warping bass wobbles and scorching drums.

Bringing things to a close, ‘Leviathan’ is the epic by product from former Med School maestros Keeno and Polaris. Historic choral melodies are beautifully juxtapos
