As well as producing, writing and singing on his tracks, Degs has brought in an all-star collective with S.P.Y, Logistics, Unglued, LSB and Pola & Bryson. ‘Sleepless’ showcases Degs’ versatility as a vocalist. This deep, atmospheric number, produced by Shogun Audio’s Pola & Bryson, wields the art of spoken word and unique lyrical flow for a mesmerising late-night stepper. Degs’ bittersweet soul shines through on ‘Head Trip’ with the production finesse of Phil:osophy. Haunting piano work serves as the foundation for Degs’ silky flows, tear-out rap and snappy hooks. Hospital heavyweight Logistics, a master of liquid D+B, joins the fray on ‘Colour My Soul’ for a sublime track that takes you back to the original Hospital loungecore sound.

Degs’ meteoric rise has taken him worldwide, performing alongside his touring DJ, Lens, at huge summer hotspots like Audioriver, Sun & Bass and Hospitality In The Park. After thirteen years and over ninety releases, Med School has stacked the chairs and closed its doors. As a final farewell to the label, the ‘Med School: Graduation’ compilation celebrates the life of Hospital Records’ once sister label, as well as the musicians and culture that defined it, with 23 brand new tracks from label stalwarts such as Bop, Keeno, Etherwood and Whiney as well as the new blood that was always so important to the label’s experimental output.

In Med School fashion, the album brings together a myriad of drum & bass stylings and beyond. From the microfunk movements of Bop to Illexandra’s warped emergency warnings, Lakeway’s upfront grime beats to the unique electronic musings of Frederic Robinson, A.Fruit and Kimyan Law.

Representing the serene side of Med School is Etherwood’s ‘Nowhere To Go But Everywhere’, alongside beautiful contributions from Keeno, Natus and Polaris. The tribal infusions of Royalston’s stepper ‘Mark’s Shibari Groove’ and Lung’s techno-fused rabbit hole ‘Stop Crying’ switch up the pace to reflect the breadth of Med School’s outputs. The compilation also calls back to the very beginnings of the label with a special VIP treatment of S.P.Y’s first release in the Hospital camp, MEDIC1 ‘Black Flag’.

Whiney not only brings in his deep new stepper ‘Close To You’ but is also the man behind the continuous mix on the album, seamlessly bringing together all 23 tracks for one final salute to Med School Music.

Following his widely appraised ‘Shadows and Silhouettes’ LP, Hugh Hardie’s latest offering is his most unique to date. During isolation, the Bristol-based producer set himself a challenge to write a new track from scratch every day for 7 days birthing the ‘7 Tunes In 7 Days’ project. For what would be a daunting process for many creatives, Hugh explained that the time limit “made it impossible to procrastinate or overthink decisions” - allowing his ideas to come to fruition more fluidly. Continuing to showcase his sonic diversity, ‘7 Tunes In 7 Days’ is home to soulful liquid funk, sub-heavy new wave jungle and minimal yet deep drum & bass bangers.

Setting the bar high from the offset, the week began with the creation of ‘Back & Forth’ which sees melancholic arpeggios and captivating pad hits rest delicately above signature rolling breakbeats. The EP varies between old school jungle influences on ‘Klaxon’ and soothing vocal chops contrasting coherently with gated synths as that much-loved Hospital loungecore style shines through in Day 4’s ‘CNK’.

Teaming up with the acclaimed duo Pola & Bryson for Day 6, ‘Bending Light’ consists of elegant flourishes and heartfelt strings. For the final day, Hugh upped the challenge by deciding to not use any loops or samples, instead making use of his hardware synths and microphone to record the purrs and meows of his cat Gretchen to create pads and a bass line for the aptly titled, ‘Gretchen Bass’. This techy stepper is a perfect round off to a successful week of music-making. As Hugh said himself - “Sometimes all you need is a microphone and a cat”.

Hugh Hardie’s ‘7 Tunes In 7 Days’ project displays the versatility of his production and creative ability. Making the most of his time in isolation, Hugh attempted to demonstrate the numerous benefits of staying at home during these difficult times, when the world needs music more than ever.
