Nancy Tries to Take the Night

For my original creative project, I wanted to focus on drum programming, improving and creating more rhythmically interesting and dynamic drum parts for tracks as I feel that's something I can push to the side in pursuit of harmonic ideas. 

This project has been inspired by a variety of artists and genres. I was particularly interested in aspects of IDM, Glitch, Ambient and Experimental Electronic, including artists such as DJRum (Portrait with firewood), Sweet Trip (Velocity: Design: Comfort.), Thom Yorke etc. 

Throughout the project I developed ideas using Addictive Drums 2 and Ultrabeat, drawing in notes using the pencil tool and adjusting the velocity to incorporate more realistic dynamics and ghost notes. I Watched a video tutorial series on how to make more complex IDM style drum patterns by combining the sound of a real drum kit with electronic production and I applied what I learnt from this in a few different styles. 

I made the first study before watching the tutorial series and while still unsure whether to focus on exploring harmony or rhythm for the project. Stylistic Inspiration for this study came from the track creature. Pt1 by DJRum and I aimed to follow a similar instrumentation. 

Across the different studies I feel as though i made improvements in my technique and application, I started off by using the grid within Ultrabeat but moved on to the piano roll as I found it more flexible allowed for more faster paced and precise positioning. I also experimented with reversing elements to create new, abstract textures and for the last project including mallet instruments but played in a more percussive way.
