Tokyo techno maven Risa Taniguchi unveils “When I See You” EP on the formidable Second State. No stranger to the Berlin label, Taniguchi released her “How We Dance Again” EP just last year, in addition to a number of contributions to the label’s compilation series.

Launching the EP is the title track “When I See You”. A dominating kick drum is accompanied by bouncing percussion and a euphony of shakers, while the looping vocal builds on the track’s intensity. Hurried claps, and distorted synths are introduced, while a punching bass line powers the track on, herding all the elements into a crescendo before a final kick concludes with authority.

Warped synth keys, claps, flurried hi-hats and a muffled kick welcome you into “Mute Everything”. Chopping, skittish percussions cut and jolt across the heaving bass, simulating a frantic energy. A rolling 303 line dances with brightly shining synth notes. Towards the close, the synths are stripped away and the percussion takes over once again, with only the subdued acid and bass line at play.

There's an air of mystery about this one, which is always nice when you're talking about ragged-round-the-edges dark room techno. The Leyla label is a brand new imprint out of the Netherlands, from an impresario with impeccable credentials in an entirely different sphere of electronic music, but who is clearly taking very serious steps into "classic techno with a modernist twist". There's not so much mystery about Manni Dee, mind. Whether alone or with Happa as Habits Of Hate, the London-based producer has been dropping relentlessly dark tracks for half a decade now, and this is among his best. Watch it cause a riot in the rave.

It’s time again for us to welcome another first timer to the Second State roster: Rocko Garoni. Having been label manager of Sisyphon, in-house imprint of the acclaimed Sisyphos Club in Berlin, Garoni is no stranger to curating high quality records, and this time he gets to be curator of his own stunning ‘Detection’ EP.
Jumping in head first, ‘Detection’, mischievous number that is equal parts vicious and cunning as it is sensual and inviting. Provocative female whispers float over a beat sure to slay any crowd, any time. Switching gears, Garoni heads into houser territories on ‘Phaseful’, where glimmers of classic House artifacts are scattered like flickering shimmers over an energetic drum illustration. Coming up next is ‘Tragedy’. It’s low slung drums, vast spanning bass and sinister vocal declarations make it an ideal ambassador for the dark mysterious nights. Wrapping up the EP is a huge rework of 'Detection' by Regal, who churns out a burner by cranking up the tempo and tension with crisp drums and an undeniable classic rave leads sure to make the forefathers of Techno proud. If it keeps up like this, we expect much more big things in the future from Rocko Garoni!
