  With the ongoing broo-ha ha over the campaign to prise Simon Cowell's vice like grip off the Christmas number 1 spot, it's all too easy to create a ridiculous dichotomy where POP=BAD and TEENAGE TANTRUMS, sorry ROCK MUSIC=GOOD. Here at Hot Pockets we have no truck with such orthodoxy, as old armpit britches himself points out the Christmas charts were hardly a bastion of great music before his parade of karaoke singers appeared on the scene.

  No, what we need is quite simply better pop music, made with all the passion and spirit of your finest indie troubadour but filtered through the prism of a 3 minute teenage symphony. Listen back to the likes of Roxy Music or Pet Shop Boys and you have music that is as equally up to the task of inspiring as it is of soundtracking a quick fumble on the dancefloor, that is the beauty of great pop music.

  Enter stage left Brighton's :Kinema:, who having blown our white socks off with their amazing keytar boosted live show make their recorded debut with the Circles EP out on Hot Pockets in February. Blue eyed soul for the 21st Century, :Kinema: sound like the bastard child of Michael McDonald and Hot Chip (indeed former Hot Chip drummer Grovesnor features on remix duties), blessed with a vision of pop so pure as to be potentially blinding.

  Having already worked up a blogging frenzy with their inspired autotuned take on Animal Collective's My Girls, this EP shows off the boys own talent for crafting an exquisite pop moment. Released on limited edition 2 track 7" vinyl and as a 4 track digital EP, Circles heralds a bright new dawn for pop music in the decade no one's quite sure what to call yet...

Following the solid gold pop smash that was their debut 7" Circles, South Coast soul boys :Kinema: return with their biggest and best song to date, My Beautiful Machines, a joyously upbeat love song to their synthesizers.

A live favourite, the band have been closing their sets with Machines for much of the past 6 months, prompting euphoric stage invasions at venues such as Proud in Camden and Brick Lane's 93 Feet East.

If the original of :Kinema:‘s My Beautiful Machines is straight up classic pop then the remixes courtesy of Sweden's Drop Out Orchestra, take the track off into disco heaven.

Teasing out Dominic's vocals, the track builds and builds, going through several major changes, from orchestral swirls and ridiculously funky bass, through to driving percussion and arpeggiated synths, ensuring that even at 12 minutes long, you'll still be wanting an even longer re-edit.
