We started Clubwerks 6 months ago so we could showcase the work of a couple of artists who impressed us with their novel music-making powers. Many more appeared on the way so it grew fast into a label with a busy release schedule for 2015 that will also feature music by some of the new talent on this compilation.

The Clubwerks Christmas Compilation is our kind of a family reunion for the heads but also, objectively speaking, an arsenal of novelties and functional club tracks wrapped up neatly in a cohesive set. These are tracks to be experienced in dark rooms or open fields, so what better way to show them off than in a sequence. There are never enough good dance tracks in a DJ's collection and all of these could easily stand out in any so we hope you'll be hearing these in a club near you.

B.O.M is yet another incredibly promising young Swiss producer from Basel to join our expanding Clubwerks crew. His music is unexpected and as intriguing as it is straight-forward. He makes slowly-building impactful drum tracks that draw on ghetto-tech, touch on stripped-down bass music and exude clubby functionalism intended for minimal-leaning, open-minded crowds. 

With the exception of Jucy, the gorgeous house chant that opens the Abracadabra EP, all tracks are percussion-based jams packed with clever and fun instrumental moments alongside cool vocal hooks. 

Each track has a particularly strong personality and seems better than the previous one, which is a rare feat on a 6 track EP. With the arrival of artists such as B.O.M we can only anticipate more and more surprising music such as his, because this EP is nothing short of a definition of Clubwerks' musical intentions.

As an export of one of the fastest rising electronic hotbeds in the UK, established Belfast DJ and producer Jordan is developing his eponymous night into a brand new label for 2016. Featuring on point and house and techno from the man himself, Nocturne will also call upon plenty of high profile remixers and really aims to keep the spotlight on the exciting Northern Irish scene.

Nocturne, which started out as an illicit afterhours gathering and has also spawned a Saturday off-shoot, The Night Institute, is a party that is very much setting the local agenda and as such has gotten plenty of kudos thanks to tasteful bookings like Roman Flugel, Session Victim and Gerd Janson.

After the success of the parties, the logical next step is to develop the brand into an outlet for quality club beats. The man behind it all is Jordan McCuaig, someone who has impressed with releases on Luke Solomon's Classic Music Company, Extended Play and Made Fresh Daily. Like his home city, he is very much a star on the rise, as this first new EP on his own label proves.

Expert opener ‘Killing Mockingbirds’ is a jostling, busy cut with warm and dubby drums, loose claps and a fat bass line that rips right through the middle. It’s fresh and inviting and has some well sculpted synths to add colour and heat.

On remix duties first is Borrowed Identity, one of the breakout stars of recent times who releases on DVS1’s Mistress label. His take on the original is expressive indeed, and the result is a peak time cut with hulking drums, catchy chords and knotted bass riffs that really get you going.

Next, ’The Block’ is a classically inclined house cut with a wild and rich bassline spraying about between pinging kick drums, spangled synths and explosive snares and is a truly dynamic workout that will make every dance floor jack.

The last of the originals is ‘Strung Out’, and it has rinsing breakbeats, wild, pitch-bending tones and a dark jungle energy that makes it perfect for freakier late night sessions.

This one gets remixed in style by Adesse Versions, the acclaimed British techno talent who runs his own label and relates his killer wares on others like Numbers and Local Talk. In his hands it is an expansive, tough house groove with punchy kicks and perfectly smeared synths bringing a great sense of soul to the table.

This is the start of a sure to be exciting new label that pays homage to its local roots as well as to Jordan’s own well informed dance music understanding. As such, you should waste no time in getting behind it.

Next at bat in the Sepalcure remix arena is a motely old crew: UK parvenu Lee Walker, American polymath LA-4A and Bristol doyen Appleblim are the hitters, “Brother Forest”, “Devil Inside” and “Dub of” their respective pitchers.

On the up and up ever since his ubiquitous DJ Deeon collaboration “Freak Like Me” took the charts by storm earlier this year, Lee Walker brings his youthful zest to Folding Time’s ninth track “Brother Forest” – a neo-classic approach to house music that appeals to younger and seasoned battlers alike, visceral to the max. LA-4A (aka Ambivalent) and Appleblim take a more seductive, cerebral path: the former fashioning Angelica Bess’s vocals on “Devil Inside” into a broken beat serenade that builds along an acidic crescendo, the latter taking cues from the title to create a literal “Dub of” the original with all the flair of an OG. Something for everyone here.

In a spontaneous way, Sanfuentes Records releases have been offering different overviews about Latin América: The street-tour that Mijo took us into the incomparable Ciudad de México; the peep into Santiago’s idiosyncratic and sexy nightlife by Román & Castro or the nostalgia and psychedelia from Patagonia’s isolation that Rous portrayed in his “Púrpura Del Ocaso” release.

“Visiones”, Sanfuentes’ new EP, comes from a similar place. It reflects on the continuously ongoing cultural cross-pollination happening in Latin América; a phenomena that brings unity and topples political, social and spiritual borders.

Thru the three original tracks on the release, Sanfuentes shows a very integrating vision, one that seems particularly necessary for the times we’re living. This, expanded with the remix by the North American producer LA-4A (the more Acid / Techno oriented alias of Ambivalent) to the track “Derecho Contra El Muro” (Full On Against The Wall), arguably the most political track in the lot. The track gets a completely new meaning in his hands and closes the “Visiones” EP in a top note.

Fabrice Lig Black Monday EP

His most substantial release on Marc Romboy’s label since his ‘Purple Raw’ series a few years back, each track
is written as a special tribute to four people who’ve had a massively positive impact on Fabrice’s life, but have
sadly since passed on. Expressing himself in the most honest, articulate way he can, this one runs deeper than
deep.
‘Jim The Magnificent Fox’ is a dark, strident tribute to FlashForward resident Christophe Adam. A doctor in
criminology and psychology, an exceptional DJ and a dear friend to Fabrice, you can feel the emotion on every
jagged edge.
‘Mr Wa’ follows. Striking poses at every possible opportunity, this dedication to an old school friend in his
hometown Charleroi. Bright, breezy and laced with movement and variation, it’s a celebration of the positive
energy and time Wa always gave to people.
‘Marc’s Tribal Dance’ follows. A hip-shifting, butt-wriggling funk techno workout, this commemorates Marc
Morgan. A gifted French singer, and also Fabrice’s good friend and publisher, he’s another soul who has left us
too soon.
Finally ‘Pivert The Playmobil’. Another firm ally and creative genius from Fabrice’s hometown, Pivert passed
away a few years ago but his impact on Lig has never faded. Light, jazzy and sprinkled with acid, it’s a fittingly
reflective finale for a touching, thoughtful EP.
Four stunning tracks, four beautiful tributes, four great men remembered, one powerful reminder to tell our
friends how much we appreciate them…

Hotflush is a record label launched by Paul Rose aka Scuba in 2003. Its early period was spent as a central part of London's Bass Music scene which exploded in the mid 2000s, although the label has always been difficult to pigeonhole musically and recent output has focused on Techno and House.
