A percussion quartet inspired by NGC 6302, more commonly known as the Butterfly or Bug Nebula, a bipolar planetary nebula located in the Scorpius constellation. NGC is shorthand for the New General Catalogue of Nebulae and Clusters of Stars, an astronomical record of deep sky objects.

NGC 6302

Made with a VCV rack instrument using only resonance pinging as sound sources rather than oscillators, named the ++ping. A total of twelve resonant filter chains in three tunings, plus some other bits.

The Temple Bell explores the interplay of resonance between two grand pianos. 

The title haiku relates both to the audible textural aspects of the piece and to the poetic sensibility of invoking the obvious. It is about allowing oneself to be surrounded by the fullness of echoes upon echoes, to transcend tradition by making it into something else.

Made from field recordings, vintage electronics and unreal instruments, I CAN'T TELL YOU HOW surveys the thresholds in music that delineate technology and humanity.

There are the shifting hums of a 600A supply as a concert takes place, improvisations with an analogue synth and sparse electronic transformations of in-the-box sounds. Together they create a portrait of the places the music isn't, a negative of our creations' impact on the world, and the shadows of the imprints they leave on us.

WHAT THE THUNDER SAID was written as a response to Cassandra Miller's piece 'O Zomer!', and is inspired by the last section of T. S Eliot’s 1922 poem 'The Waste Land'. It draws on the fragmented structure of the poem and its themes of destruction, despair, renewal and potential.

An experiment with Ableton MPE and the SOMA Terra. For those who like having their ears tickled from the inside.

Airports are strange, biformative places. Designed singularly to facilitate travel, they also completely remove you from the experience of travelling. The people who pass through each have their own journeys, purposes and circumstances; they are corralled into a shared space that morphs to fit them, a shared experience, with a shared trajectory. This is nothing but a brief blip - they are transported, shifted onwards and sideways, the process repeats, and the momentary enclave disperses, leaving the airport changed but constant.

The orchestra is joined by a shifting backdrop of 5EDO chords, field recordings from Madrid-Barajas Airport and live processing to create a twin ambiance of perpetual motion and inertia, community and disparity, movement that goes nowhere.

Terminal

Hurricane Milton made landfall in the southern United States in early October 2024 as part of one of the most active hurricane seasons on record. ‘Milton’ uses weather data from it to generate sound, offering the hurricane an electronic instrument to play while the ensemble react to the growing tumult, their decisions shaping the piece as they go. They, along with the rest of us, are engulfed - sheltering, listening to the radio, navigating the storm and the devastation as best we can.

‘Milton’ was written between October and November 2024 for The House of Bedlam and performed at the Sound Sculptures concert on the 11 June 2025.

Night Wire is an ongoing project examining the hidden electromagnetic soundscapes of our world. This is the first in a series of location-based pieces and was recorded at Housel Bay in Cornwall via air and software-defined radio.

Early spiritualists and engineers alike considered radio a means to communicate with dimensions beyond our own. Cromwell Fleetwood Varley, one of the engineers responsible for the laying of the Atlantic telegraph cables, thought it could be used to listen in to the conversations between angels. In the present day we are suffused by invisible broadcast and utility signals, and there are plenty of ghosts to be heard - signals that help us navigate, keep our watches running, open doors for us, sing to us.
