Aïsha Devi nurtures an idiosyncratic approach to her music. She describes her sound as Aetherave, and uses bassy-heavy club motifs and intentional aesthetic signifiers to transport listeners to a dizzying, kinetic environment, harnessing timeless frequencies. On each record, Devi has advanced her philosophy and developed her technology; her last album 'DNA Feelings' was a radical hybrid of ancient mysticism and rebellious pop, and 'Death is Home' propels listeners towards the extremes, bending fictile beats and cybernetic textures into transformational songs. This eagerly-awaited new album is a livable, breathable sonic essence that reveals itself alchemically, reorienting anachronistic cultural preconceptions with its contemporary, ornate language and eerie architecture.

'Death is Home' is ultimately a manifesto. It's Devi's most revealing work to date and a direct result of her personal evolution and ongoing quest. Growing up under the shadow of isolation and abuse, she formed her practice as a healing method, using it to neutralize her past and recreate an alternate, more hospitable reality - beyond the human condition. 
Her feelings were compounded when she tracked down the whereabouts of her father B.K. Gurung, a Nepali drummer whom she never knew. Devi was informed he had died young, but rather than perceive this as a binary, through mourning, she realized that his existence had already offered her a lifeline and a refuge. 

Devi's words and productions reach out to a place where weightlessness has the power to dissolve the corporeal world's manufactured terror of death. Without this trepidation, life's boundaries and limitations fall away. "Burn the flesh, a Deva's born," she sings over tense, pneumatic kicks on 'Not Defined by the Visible'. Her voice is contorted by electronic processes, but the meaning is human: to reach the holy, we must shed our skin. The narrative that guides the album unfurls with the plasticity of an open-world videogame, a space where one can unravel the dogma of life vs. death. On 'Lick Your Wounds', Devi reveals her deepest trauma, pacifying it with rousing, ritualistic rhythms and melancholic pads. "Vapors of violence remain in my broken bones, intoxicate my DNA," she invokes. "I'll lick my wounds and heal at night. I'll take over." She extends this invitation to anybody tuned in to her signals, providing lodging for those that crave it. Birth is virtual. Death is home.

"I listened to the Dragons album with the ambition to translate it into a visual language. 
I wanted to visually convey earthy, organic textures with a modern, hyperreal edge. The machine learning latent space interpolations are a perfect tool to evoke the uncanny, unreality from algorithmically synthesised morphing video. I trained three StyleGAN2 models on abiotic surface datasets of increasing scales. This produced morphing, machine-made visions of crystalline microscopy, rocky surfaces and the topography of the entire Earth as originally seen by the Landsat 8 observation satellite. "

Snow Ghosts is the collaboration between Throwing Snow & recent Phaeleh collaborator Augustus Ghost. Recently releasing debut album ‘A Small Murmuration’, they’ve been The Guardian’s ‘New Band of the Day’, Zane Lowe’s ‘Next Hype’, and have played a live acoustic session on Dermot O’Leary’s BBC Radio 2 show.

‘And The World Was Gone’ pins a sense of unease to an acoustic guitar riff, cello and Augustus Ghost’s most affecting vocal. Remixes come from Roly Porter (one half of bass duo Vex’d), who brings out the track’s darkness, whilst D&B maestro Calibre emphasises the melancholy in its melody. Finally, in-demand Bristol producer Kahn provides the most arresting cover version imaginable.

The 12” is cut to heavyweight 180g vinyl by mastering engineer of the year, Matt Colton.

"Aethernal Score’’, Aisha Devi’s commission for the BBC Concert Orchestra, is an attempt to intensify the vibrational capacities of the orchestra and divert the expected course of classical-electronic collaboration. Devi has always used her art to push against cultural presumptions, so it made sense to assemble the initial framework for the piece from some of her acclaimed back catalogue, meshing it with new compositions and reworking everything with orchestral elements that follow Devi's radical metaphysical and theoretical guidelines. It's best described as a twenty-minute "mixtape" that embodies the connections between the concert hall, the club and the sacred ritual - or even a demonstration of the orchestra's hidden potential.

Inspired by her Himalayan heritage, Devi has been exploring the entrancing sonic application of monastic practices such as throat singing for many years, as well as developing psychoacoustic methods. This led her to perceive sound as a way of expanding brain activity - something that also plays a shrouded role in the world of chamber music. Applying this to the orchestra, she began thinking about each instrument as a discrete frequency range, searching for its ethereal properties rather than fixating on an object saddled with cultural baggage. Using the density, amplitude and vibrational impact of the sounds in unison, Devi was able to summon the club environment, seizing that space's inherent power - Devi was making orchestral rave.

Two versions of the score are included on the release, one orchestrated in collaboration with Robert Ames and conducted by André de Ridder, performed on October 29, 2021 with the BBC Concert Orchestra at Queen Elizabeth Hall which was commissioned by Elizabeth Alker for Unclassified Live, and the purely electronic version - the synthetic backbone of the composition. Both are very different, and listened to together highlight the transformative power of instrumentation. The result is like a purge of history and hierarchy, with tools of colonization hollowed-out and fashioned into new shapes. A clash of grandeur and sensitivity, and a live deconstruction of the artistic ego, "Aethernal Score" is transcendent re-evaluation of classical and electronic sounds that doesn't just make you think, it makes you resonate.

@Wordcolour returns to Houndstooth with ‘Ratios III’, the third instalment of their ‘Ratios’ series. Released in 2023, Ratios I and II kick-started a series of two-track EPs of adventurous, experimental club music. Ratios III continues this trend whilst also being Wordcolour’s most peak-time offering to date.

‘Crush’ (04th Sept) is a 130bpm cut which features an infectious vocal set against a pounding polyrhythmic kick. The sub-heavy groove builds in energy before turning on its head half-way through, rocketing upwards through a polyrhythmic shift into a 170ish 4/4 beatdown with a vicious bassline.

‘Rapture’ (Sept 13th) sees Wordcolour turn their attention to psychedelic loopy techno. Diving deeper into microtonality, Wordcolour reimagines the music and sound design written for Andrea Khora’s 2024 short film of the same name.

Djrum's first release since 2019, the Meaning’s Edge EP is an introduction to a whole new world. For the artist also known as Felix Manuel, it was created in the final stretches of six rather traumatic years work. Having carefully honed his techniques and aesthetics, and learned some hard-won emotional lessons over this time, finally he began to work in a quicker, lighter fashion – and to cleanse his palate a little by bringing in a fresh ingredient: his own flute playing. For listeners, though, it will serve as an appetiser, a way into the delights and complexities of this new phase of his creativity.
 
It’s a serious work in its own right, mind. The use of flutes – including Bansuri, Shakuhatchi, Western Classical, and synthesised all blending and blurring into one another – gives it a coherence and a sense of airiness that unites the five tracks over half an hour, however divergent their beats get. And as in all his music, 
 
Here you find the opening track ‘Codex’ which alone touches on OG dubstep, Aphex Twin-like braindance, post-classical exploration, movie themes and more. The gentle tones and melodies that rise up out of it perfectly conjure Felix’s running theme of a protective bubble that provides a sense of safety and tranquillity even as the beats and acid gurgles and spurts all around it conjure up the slings and arrows of life’s difficulties.
 

… and it’s only just the beginning. This is the return of a master craftsperson more focused than ever on his vision and vocation and ready to blow your mind all over again.

Babyfather reheat Drama as a crispy, downbeat Meditation Mix VIP with new vocals and more stoned flow, sounding something like an early evening scene from south London.  

Gaika’s Zicatea Dub of Glow is much more messed up, elusive, with full sunken subbass and smudged vocals swirled in a sort of cyber echo chamber. One of the strongest things we’ve heard from the divisive producer.
