We are thrilled to announce the cinematic debut album from London-based artist @Wordcolour, hitting shops on 24th June 2022.

An artist very much on the rise, following two EPs on Houndstooth and one on Lapsus, ‘The trees were buzzing, and the grass.’ is described as an album of collaboration with contributions from percussionist Michael Anklin, voice artist Natasha Lohan and performance artist Es Morgan as well as vocal appearances from Wordcolour’s circle of friends.

Working with Es Morgan on a written text for the album, Wordcolour chopped and sampled the words throughout, inviting friends to narrate the music along with recordings from Michael Anklin and Natasha Lohan. “My dad was an acoustics researcher before he retired, and when I was growing up we always had various microphones and bits of gear lying around the house, as well as an early DAW on the computer.  I was a pretty nerdy kid, and I'd always mess around on the computer with my friends, recording our voices and combining them with audio FX to create stories.  It was about creating a whole vivid world in sound, and on this album I feel that I'm really doing the same thing,” Wordcolour explains. 

“In one sense the album is quite cinematic. Not in the sense that it is big or epic, but in the way it is structured. At times the music literally cuts like a camera - moving the listener from one acoustic environment to another. It indulges a fascination with the hyper-real world of Foley and film sound effects, natural ambiences, and Spielbergian film music. It almost feels like an album about film.”

Objekt #5 is the latest instalment in Objekt's eponymous whitelabel series and his first release since his 2018 album Cocoon Crush. Tackling "the slow banger" with a signature flair, he delivers two of his most raucous club tracks to date.

"Writing an album gave me the opportunity to expand what I was making beyond the club, and I found myself returning to the world of some of the earliest sketches I made for Wordcolour. In these experiments, I was kind of trying to create "scenes". Tracks which had the emotional tone and texture of a scene from a movie, but without the visuals or the narrative. Kind of like how it feels to fall asleep in front of an episode of the X files or something."

"This track features some amazing percussion work by Michael Anklin. I came across Michi's work on his brilliant collaborative record with Kilchhofer on the Marionette label. I asked Michi to record a number of different textures and improvisations for me which I would then cut up and reorder. I remember the day the first recordings arrived I had such a big smile on my face, and this track really showcases his work on the record."

"I also worked with my friend Es Morgan to create a long list of beautiful, evocative words which I then recorded, cut up, and used throughout the record. On Crescent, I arranged the words to try to create the hint of a narrative. I'll leave you to see if you can figure out what is happening: a strange and vivid moment in the forest."

@surgeonsgirl radiates energy with healing powers. She possesses a bizarre magnetic force that enables her to transform environments at will, transporting listeners into an intoxicating parallel realm. Her music overflows with luminescence and otherworldliness and casts a spell over all those who hear it. 

Sinead McMillan is one of the most thought-provoking and revelatory projects to emerge from Bristol in recent years. Her impressive debut EP 'A Violet Sleep', released on Bristol's Livity Sound label in 2020, unashamedly exposed her love for analogue synthesizers and explored the intersection between experimentation and emotion, through the immersive sounds of her beloved machines. While demonstrating an incredible sound maturity, she continued to delve into this sonic terrain by releasing 'The Empress Moss' on London's Inside Out label in 2021.

Lapsus welcomes Surgeons Girl into their fold with her luscious EP entitled 'Sever'. The five-track EP showcases the evolution of the British producer’s sound, where melody and texture take centre stage, with both elements engaging in a delicate and dynamic conversation for thirteen hypnotising minutes that intertwine and reshape our state of consciousness. Deliciously sequenced arpeggios, simmering bass lines and enticing percussion, all laden with effects that effortlessly appear then disappear. It is IDM with distant dub echoes, extra-terrestrial avant-techno and deeply emotive experimental electronica.

Following the release of his excellent debut on Barcelona’s Lapsus Records, Wordcolour lands on Houndstooth with an astounding EP of next generation club music. The London-based producer invites us into his musical world as we journey through three highly detailed soundscapes, both emotionally resonant and functional for the floor.

With a background in jazz, pop and contemporary classical, Wordcolour has also previously produced music for TV and theatre. On his sophomore solo release, he demonstrates his diverse musical knowledge with dynamic and engaging compositions that indicate many years of music making. While making nods to the best of contemporary UK experimentation, these cinematic tracks deftly switch between tempos all the while retaining Wordcolour’s own aesthetic signature.
