"Writing an album gave me the opportunity to expand what I was making beyond the club, and I found myself returning to the world of some of the earliest sketches I made for Wordcolour. In these experiments, I was kind of trying to create "scenes". Tracks which had the emotional tone and texture of a scene from a movie, but without the visuals or the narrative. Kind of like how it feels to fall asleep in front of an episode of the X files or something."

"This track features some amazing percussion work by Michael Anklin. I came across Michi's work on his brilliant collaborative record with Kilchhofer on the Marionette label. I asked Michi to record a number of different textures and improvisations for me which I would then cut up and reorder. I remember the day the first recordings arrived I had such a big smile on my face, and this track really showcases his work on the record."

"I also worked with my friend Es Morgan to create a long list of beautiful, evocative words which I then recorded, cut up, and used throughout the record. On Crescent, I arranged the words to try to create the hint of a narrative. I'll leave you to see if you can figure out what is happening: a strange and vivid moment in the forest."

An artist very much on the rise, following two EPs on Houndstooth and one for Lapsus, ‘The trees were buzzing, and the grass.’ is described as an album of collaboration with contributions from percussionist Michael Anklin, voice artist Natasha Lohan and performance artist Es Morgan as well as vocal appearances from Wordcolour’s circle of friends.

I Was That Book

“A Typical Night in the Pit” is a collection of new music by Los Angeles’ Nick Malkin. It is an album that finds the artist absorbed in the density and chaos of the urban complex. It is unquestionably an “LA album,” but not the LA of hi-fi listening bars and twinkling, Instagram-ready New Age. Rather, Malkin navigates something more akin to the LA found in the films of Robert Altman or Alan Rudolph— overheated, tense, hazy, frayed— with blue-lit, nocturnal compositions that at times recall Mark Isham’s noirish scores for those subversive (anti-)Hollywood pictures. Enlisting a revolving cast of LA experimentalists, Malkin has assembled a record that is as chameleonic as it is cohesive, offering up vignettes ranging from the skewed MIDI-jazz of “Sixth Street Conversation” to the skulking menace of “Estacionamiento Privado,” before giving way to the wide-eyed, cloudy closer “View From Two Perspectives.” C’mon, let’s go in here and get outta this heat.
