Soon, the question on everybody’s lips will be: “Have You Heard? Have you heard how The Muffinz rule the world?”. The Muffinz have unleashed their mysteriously beautiful world of eclectic soul to the South African public and they are set for world domination.

The music of The Muffinz is so new, yet so soulful, so accessible, so honest and so innocent, that it appeals to all age groups, races, classes and sexes. 

The five young musicians make a refreshing change from the usual run of the mill rappers and house DJs, who are currently dominating the popular music scene, in that they play real instruments, and they play them well. Added to that is all five musicians are great singers in their different genres of expertise.

Take for instance electric guitarist and vocalist, Atomza. His voice is best described as a young Michael Jackson meets Usher with a twist of rock. Drummer Keke then enters with his  Senegalese meets rumba vocals. The band switch from a groovy R&B rhythm led by acoustic guitarist Mthae and bassist Skabz, to a classy jazz guitar sound introduced by electric guitarist and acapella singer, Simz. And that by the way is just on one song!

That is why, to explain the band, they decided to call themselves The Muffinz. Explains Mthae: “We wanted a name that would be remembered, something catchy but a name that people would want to find out more about. Plus, we all come from different backgrounds musically and so we all bring different ingredients - as in the ingredients in a muffin.”

Always the year’s definitive round-up of all that’s deep and soulful in dance music and now in its ninth incarnation – which must be some kind of South African record – ‘Deep House Sounds’ is back. And, as always, quality is the order of the day.
 
Also, as always, the mix is collated and executed with precision by one of the most esteemed DJs on the SA scene, Vinny Da Vinci, who has once again found and blended up the finest house tracks doing the rounds right now. And he’s found plenty from names that will be familiar to local crowds because of their recent pilgrimages to these shores.
 
They include British beatsmith Atjazz (who’s featured twice), his compatriot Charles Webster and newer gun QB Smith. Also making an appearance are Spiritchaser, who turn in a remix of Jask featuring Josie – a cut that may just have the same appeal as their massive “These Tears”, THE tune of 2011 and originally featured on the last volume in this essential line. Look out for their artist album on House Afrika later this year!
 
Joining the contingent of international visitors are Detroit’s Alton Miller, who gets the remix treatment from German rhythm ace Andre Lodemann. The 12-song track list also has contributions from Chicago legend Glenn Underground, seminal house singer Stephanie Cooke, a coming together of garage legends Karizma and DJ Spinna, Joshua Iz, France’s Art Of Tones and a huge anthem from Gregory Porter remixed by Opolopo.
 
Vinny’s selection skills are matched by his mix, which is as tight as ever, but which also strings these disparate but smooth sounds into a dance floor story. And it’s undoubtedly one of the best stories house-heads will hear all year.

Nastee Nev - '0808 Sweetsoul'

Following their signing of highly-rated Pretoria producer Nastee Nev (aka Neville Moeletsi), House Afrika are proud to present his superb debut album for the label, '0808 Sweetsoul', a release that's sure to set a new high watermark for the fast-flowing outpouring of soulful South African house.

Nastee Nev's credentials are impeccable: he's already worked with the likes of Kafele Bandele, Afrotraction and Andy Compton, and remixed DJ Christos' remake of Brenda Fassie's "Weekend Special". He featured on Kanunu's excellent 'Soul Meditation' compilation and recorded for 2lani the Warrior's Do It Now label (alongside the likes of Charles Webster, Collective Spirit and Deep Xcape). He also made a huge splash with the hit track "Hung Up on You" with Donald Sheffey, a staple for months on stations like Yfm and Metro.

But this album sees him at the pinnacle of his powers, wrapping lush vocals around gorgeous melodies generated by Rhodes, piano and strings. Mastered by the amazing Martin "Atjazz" Iveson, ‘0808 Sweetsoul’ contains contributions from an array of top class vocalists, including the aforementioned Donald Sheffey (who pops up on the album's first single, the already massive "Let Go").

Also adding doses of vocal soul to the album are the likes of Kaylow; Chicago's Cei Bei (who has worked with the likes of Glenn Underground, Abicah Soul and Gene Hunt); Merldy Barbara Berry (who's collabed with HHP and Zolani from Freshlyground); the legendary US lyricist / producer Keith Thompson (who tracked the vocal for Raze's seminal "Break 4 Love" over two decades ago and who has worked with luminaries like Marshall Jefferson, Joe T. Vannelli, Victor Simonelli and Tony Humphries); Tandra Zawadi; Dana Byrd (a sometime Andy Compton collaborator), Pholoso and UK-based Steve Menzies.

Rich in emotive voices, momentum and melody, '0808 Sweetsoul' is a sumptuous proposition that's bound to be a huge house game-changer, both here and abroad.
