For our 12th release, HNH regular Karlton Phillips is taking us back to the old skool with the Acid Slaps EP. 

The title track is a chunky cut of ‘ardcore ‘ouse. Combining Karlton’s trademark, razor-sharp percussion, chopped-up Todd Terry style hip-house vocals and 90s rave synth stabs all tied together with a huge rolling bassline. This one’s “for the DJs out there”, and we know you guys are gonna do some damage with it!

On second track ‘Up Above ’89’, Karlton ramps the euphoria up to 11. With its infectious vocal hook, bitter-sweet piano chords and bubbly organ melody, ‘Up Above’ comes like an unearthed gem from the golden days of New Jeresy house. Head back, eyes closed, hands in the air - the track asks us to “feel the rhythm of house” and we oblige.

Final track ‘Jackin Up The House’ is a deep and sultry number aimed square at the late night/early morning dancefloor sweet-spot. The piano stabs and the tight jackin drums hark backwards, but the glitched-out vocal licks keep things fresh and future. 

Bringing together 3 old skool grooves with a 2k16  sheen and swagger, Karlton Phillips’ only gone and done it again.

アシッド・リバイバルが起こりつつある中のドンぴしゃなリリース、お馴染みのHNHレギュラーKarlton Phillipsによる「Acid Slaps EP」。
 
オールドスクールハウスの決まりを破り、90年代始まりの定番音源を新たな形で再構築。
 
タイトルトラック「Acid Slaps」ではアグレシッブなレーブシンセとTodd Terry風Hip-Hopヴォーカルを太いテックハウスベースラインでくっつける。DJにとっての最強な武器。

2曲目に収録されている「Up Above ‘89」は甘党ピアノハウス。どこか懐かしい歌声と、「ハウスのリズムを感じろ」と繰り返すヴォーカルの魔力に耐えるレーバーはいない。深海に沈みこむような気持ち良い多幸感ハウスは深夜のセットにぴったり！

３曲目、「Jackin Up The House」もアンセムくさい。なんだかセクシーな女性ヴォーカルと、歌いたくなるタイムレスなメロディの釣り合わせが最強にキャッチー。クラブ帰りでも歌い続ける。

アシッドハウスファンは迷わずゲッツ！

Niche – 北イギリスのSheffield市にあった伝説的なクラブ、同クラブが発祥地とされるベースラインの重い邪道ハウスといったジャンルの両方を指す。
当時のレジデントDJがB面やダークめなレコードを好み、他の箱と少し雰囲気が違ったらしい。治安の悪さも有名だった。97年にあるレジデントDJが、Todd TerryのSomething Going OnのUptown Remixをかけた。このリミックスはベースラインが重くかなりアグレッシブで、そこにいたクラバー狂ってDJに缶や瓶などをDJに投げつけた。悪い意味で投げたわけじゃない、とかいうのも少し理解しがたい話ですが、要はこのスタイルの曲は好評だった。これがSpeed Garageの誕生。同じ’97年に当時のマネージャーがクラブの手前で射殺された。
2001年に3万ポンドのサウンドシステムを導入。耳から血は出るらしい。薬をやってひたすらスピーカーの前に立つレーバーもたくさんいたらしい。
エントランスは板。
2005年に1億円相当のコストで摘発。SWAT系の警察400人とヘリコプター。
真のNicheはそこで終わったが、2006年と2010年の間、Speed Garageの子孫であるBasslineがまだはやっている。ロンドンではDubstepが同時進行で、BasslineはT2のHeartbrokenとDJ QのYou Wot以外はまったく流行らず。
最後にレコードでプレスされたのはNastee BoiのMussy Mad。同年、リーオープンしたNicheは刺殺でまた終わる。2010年以降はUKBという、さらにハイプで2-Stepに化けた形で進化。
2017年にまたリーオープンし、1年しないうちに刺殺でクローズ。
個人的に一番好きだった2006年―2010年のBasslineを厳選。
