Playing for Boiler Room is an odd experience, as you have three crowds, the one in the room, the one watching at home and the probably the biggest and most important audience, the ones watching after the fact, streaming or downloading this free from the context the of the night.

Constantly experimenting and evolving Berlin-based British producer Dylan Richards has never been one to take the easy, safe option. With releases under his belt for labels such as Ninja Tune, Warp Records, Houndstooth and Hypercolour, Richards’ restless spirit now sees him take on one of recorded music’s greatest challenges, the concept album.

Returning to his most recent House of Black Lanterns guise, ‘You Were Telling Me of Mountains’ is an album, epic in both scope and sound, inspired by both the soundtracks and musical freedom of artists such as Tangerine Dream and the latest electronic music being produced in bedrooms around the world. Consisting of two continuous parts containing eleven movements in total, the album was written between summer 2013 and summer 2015, and draws both musically and thematically from the artist’s frustrations of being a recording artist today.

Much as those frustrations fed into the music, so too have they led to Richard’s decisions to self-release the album through his own Bandcamp page. “The idea of selling my music directly to fans is one that on the whole didn't previously interest me. Despite many claims to the contrary over the past few years labels, when run properly, still serve a role in shaping and promoting music.” Explains Richards.

“Unfortunately though it’s becoming harder and harder to try and do something different, when credible underground labels are having to compete for the same space as chart topping pop artists then we’re all engaged in a race to the bottom, a race that we’ll never win.”

“Album projects born from a creative spark can soon be rendered to ash by lack of care and all too quickly can be extinguished altogether by the misunderstanding hand of what amounts to the modern label experience. ‘Mountains’ isn’t an easy sell but then it’s not meant to be and releasing it this way means it gets to see the light of day how I envisaged it, I can make my own mistakes, be happy in my own success, and fight to keep complete control of the process."

Not having altogether given up on the traditional artist/label relationship Richards will also be busy this autumn with House of Black Lanterns’ original releases and remixes for Creme’s new Jericho One imprint, EPM and Darkroom Dubs, none of which though were written with neon Stonehenge stage shows in mind though.

Inspired by catching a special late nineties set by Dillinja a number of years ago, where he played dipping in and out of different styles, together with my continued love of old One In The Jungle rips, this is the first in a new series journalling my favourite drum & bass tracks, across all shades and sounds of the genre, including but also beyond the usual big tracks that come up in most history style mixes... Blue Note style. More focus on the blends here rather than heavy editing, although some tracks just make cameos rather than get decent airtime.

"This mix was constructed on planes, trains, hotel rooms and in the studio throughout the months May, June, July 2010 using vinyl, CDs, Wavs and a DAT in Ableton Live and Logic.

A suitably diverse number of locations, formats and tools for a diverse label like Ninja Tune. A label that spans two thirds of my life, from putting DJ Vadim records on my christmas list (Santa decided to go with Dr Octagon - Instrumentalyst instead) to being turned away from a sold-out show to celebrate the tenth Ninja birthday, i've truly grown up to the sounds of this label's catalogue.

Ninja's history being so entwined with my own only makes a project like this harder. An ignorant person may not feel guilty about leaving out something from Bogus Order's Zen Breaks whose record was used for the static sound of needle hitting vinyl that appears a few times in this mix or for leaving out Drome. That problem is then compounded by the next - everyone knows the classics - Timber, Witness, Dark Lady... they've been on countless mixes before, but they need to be in here.. perhaps.. perhaps.... perhaps the way out is to get creative with these, to put a new spin on them. Ninja has a rich tradition of getting creative behind the turntables, from Coldcut's groundbreaking ' 70 Minutes Of Madness' Journeys By DJ mix to the diverse Solid Steel series, so why not try and up the ante a little?

So three months and a little over 250 tracks later i arrive at 74 minutes of music mixed, blended, sliced, diced, torn up and finally rendered to audio. A lot of classics, personal favourites, some slept on and a few exclusive acapellas and instrumentals care of the Ninja family. Sure there are some classics left off - The Crow immediately springs to mind, but as it stands this is The Way Of The Ninja', not only a Ninja Tune retrospective but the sound of my last 20 years."

Listening back to 4hero's Kiss FM 'R-Solution' radio shows (Which they rotated with on hosting duties alongside Kirk DeGiorgio during the early 2000s) really inspired me. The breadth of the genres on display, which shared a certain musical commonality. Especially interesting was hearing the foundation of went on to become the Broken Beat / West London sound. Fresh off putting together a series of mixes documenting some of my favourite drum and bass tracks (High Dynamic Rage) and with spring on the way, I thought this the perfect time to delve deeper in to the sound (and all things adjacent), which from memory broke through during my days behind the counter in Beggars Banquet, Kingston.

House of Black Lanterns is the latest artistic guise of Dylan Richards (formerly known as King Cannibal when working on Ninja Tune and Zilla on Warp Records).

Championed by the likes of Mary Anne Hobbs, hand-picked by Björk to work on her recent ‘Biophilia’ project, selected by Liam Howlett to remix the Prodigy, invited to compile retrospectives of the Warp and Ninja Tune catalogues as Zilla and King Cannibal respectively and DJ Mag Best of British 'Best Mix CD' award nominee, Richards is no stranger to critical recognition when it comes to twisted, layered soundscapes.

House of Black Lanterns delivers a defined change in vision and style with the material already receiving widespread support. The debut album 'Kill The Lights' on Fabric's imprint 'Houndstooth' retains the earlier influence of DJ Krust’s sprawling drum & bass soundscapes, House of Black Lanterns sees Richards develop his sound to incorporate the dub-inflected techno textures of Rhythm & Sound whilst nodding to the catchy, yet bleak floorfillers of Trax, all inspired by the modern noir visual style of Michael Mann.

In between sets at both Berghain and Panorama Bar, The Roundhouse, Boileroom, Fabric and Melkweg, remixes have been traded with Breakage, Dave Clarke & Mr Jones's _Unsubscribe_ project, followed by a  EP on Hypercolour and a release for Doc Scott's 31 Records. His new conceptual album piece ‘You Were Telling Me of Mountains’ has just been released, backed up with a hefty run of more dancefloor orientated tracks across Creme's new Jericho One imprint, Darkroom Dubs and coming soon, EPM.
