2013 has been a pretty special year for Houndstooth. This time last year we were staring down the barrel of a daunting release schedule all giddy from the excitement of it but understandably nervous at the same time. It’s all the same energy though - nerves and excitement - and the artists we’ve worked with and released have done more to inspire us and stoke our sense of pride over these past 12 months than anyone or anything else. So as a bit of a thank you to them and as a means of underlining our first year in existence, we asked our roster to remix each other’s music and create something uniquely Houndstooth for the year’s end.

"We’re all incredibly proud of what we’ve achieved in 2013. The response to our releases has been pretty overwhelming but we’ve been looking deep into 2014 for a long time already and we’re just as excited about the next 12 months. HTH vs HTH is something we wanted to do to give something back to the people who’ve been buying the records; we wanted to offer those people some new and exclusive music that would tie off the year and release something that will act as an affordable label sampler to introduce casual listeners to our Houndstooth artists." - Rob Booth

HTH vs HTH is a 7 track EP that pits the production processes of our artists against one another with Special Request and Akkord tackling each other’s stems whilst Call Super and Second Storey trade tracks alongside interweaved interpretations of House of Black Lanterns and _Unsubscribe_ and a chilling Snow Ghosts cover version.

An re-interperation of Witold Lutosławski's String Quartet as A reinterpretation of Witold Lutosławski's String Quartet. This is a studio record of a live performance i was commissioned to perform at Polish Icons as part of Sacrum Profanum in Krakow, 2012.

It was an honour to be invited to be a part of the extraordinary production and share the stage with both new and old Ninja Tune acts and also Kronos Quartet performing sections of the original compositions.

A partial DJ set and partial live set put together for the launch of Houndstooth which was across two events, this Boiler Room and a Fabric event where I did a full live show with Ghettozoid (now S Ruston).

Playing for Boiler Room is an odd experience, as you have three crowds, the one in the room, the one watching at home and the probably the biggest and most important audience, the ones watching after the fact, streaming or downloading this free from the context the of the night.

"Each and every fan of Ninja Tune‘s turntable tricknology, or Warp Records‘ leftfield dance leanings, should be familiar with the work of Dylan Richards, recently going under the moniker House of Black Lanterns. If not then perhaps you need reminding that his killer Way of The Ninja mix under his King Cannibal guise was probably one of the best mixes to come out of the Ninja stable.

The record was not only a real lesson in mixcraft. 250 tracks in 74 minutes is no mean feat, yet Richards managed it with ease, and the result is nothing short of monumental.

He’s managed it again with our GITmix, seguing 47 tracks into 45 minutes, so prepare to have your little sockies blown clean off your feet. The mix features a blend of styles, from techno, through electro with a quick stop in Baltimore for some bass-related fun.

Dylan also collaborated with Buddy Peace, as Zilla, on Warp Records, in order to curate their Watch and Repeat Play promo mix.

Of late, though, Dylan has been releasing tracks under his House of Black Lanterns name. The tracks he produces as HoBL are very much dub-infused techno beasts, growling and snarling at the listener as they breathe and emanate an organic energy. Inspired initially by bookmarking a ton of films with some excellent scores in the trailer, particularly the criminally forgotten about Never Cry Wolf film from Disney (from which a lot of dialogue is lifted, alongside the title). 

Putting together little bits and pieces and falling in to a wormhole of Japanese electronics inspired by nature, a collection of warm organic synth stuff, music inspired by wildlife and how it mirrored recovery from my own "wild" life. (not that wild, but the pun was low hanging fruit.)

Houndstooth, the new artist-led imprint from fabric, announce the release of their first
album project ‘Kill The Lights’ from House of Black Lanterns on 29th April, preceded
by single ‘Truth & Loss’ on 25th March.

The latest artistic guise of Dylan Richards (formerly known as King Cannibal on Ninja
Tune and Zilla on Warp), assumed since moving to Berlin from South London 18
months ago, House Of Black Lanterns delivers a defined change in vision and style.
Retaining the earlier influence of DJ Krust’s sprawling drum & bass soundscapes,
Richards develops his sound to incorporate the dub-inflected techno textures of
Rhythm & Sound whilst nodding to the catchy, yet occasionally bleak floorfillers
of Trax, all inspired by the modern noir visual style of Michael Mann. He explains:
“House of Black Lanterns is firstly about suspense, space and depth. It’s more restrained
than anything I have worked on before; that threat of violence is buried deep in texture rather
than worn outwardly on my sleeve.”

"This mix was constructed on planes, trains, hotel rooms and in the studio throughout the months May, June, July 2010 using vinyl, CDs, Wavs and a DAT in Ableton Live and Logic.

A suitably diverse number of locations, formats and tools for a diverse label like Ninja Tune. A label that spans two thirds of my life, from putting DJ Vadim records on my christmas list (Santa decided to go with Dr Octagon - Instrumentalyst instead) to being turned away from a sold-out show to celebrate the tenth Ninja birthday, i've truly grown up to the sounds of this label's catalogue.

Ninja's history being so entwined with my own only makes a project like this harder. An ignorant person may not feel guilty about leaving out something from Bogus Order's Zen Breaks whose record was used for the static sound of needle hitting vinyl that appears a few times in this mix or for leaving out Drome. That problem is then compounded by the next - everyone knows the classics - Timber, Witness, Dark Lady... they've been on countless mixes before, but they need to be in here.. perhaps.. perhaps.... perhaps the way out is to get creative with these, to put a new spin on them. Ninja has a rich tradition of getting creative behind the turntables, from Coldcut's groundbreaking ' 70 Minutes Of Madness' Journeys By DJ mix to the diverse Solid Steel series, so why not try and up the ante a little?

So three months and a little over 250 tracks later i arrive at 74 minutes of music mixed, blended, sliced, diced, torn up and finally rendered to audio. A lot of classics, personal favourites, some slept on and a few exclusive acapellas and instrumentals care of the Ninja family. Sure there are some classics left off - The Crow immediately springs to mind, but as it stands this is The Way Of The Ninja', not only a Ninja Tune retrospective but the sound of my last 20 years."

Listening back to 4hero's Kiss FM 'R-Solution' radio shows (Which they rotated with on hosting duties alongside Kirk DeGiorgio during the early 2000s) really inspired me. The breadth of the genres on display, which shared a certain musical commonality. Especially interesting was hearing the foundation of went on to become the Broken Beat / West London sound. Fresh off putting together a series of mixes documenting some of my favourite drum and bass tracks (High Dynamic Rage) and with spring on the way, I thought this the perfect time to delve deeper in to the sound (and all things adjacent), which from memory broke through during my days behind the counter in Beggars Banquet, Kingston.

House of Black Lanterns is the latest artistic guise of Dylan Richards (formerly known as King Cannibal when working on Ninja Tune and Zilla on Warp Records).

Championed by the likes of Mary Anne Hobbs, hand-picked by Björk to work on her recent ‘Biophilia’ project, selected by Liam Howlett to remix the Prodigy, invited to compile retrospectives of the Warp and Ninja Tune catalogues as Zilla and King Cannibal respectively and DJ Mag Best of British 'Best Mix CD' award nominee, Richards is no stranger to critical recognition when it comes to twisted, layered soundscapes.

House of Black Lanterns delivers a defined change in vision and style with the material already receiving widespread support. The debut album 'Kill The Lights' on Fabric's imprint 'Houndstooth' retains the earlier influence of DJ Krust’s sprawling drum & bass soundscapes, House of Black Lanterns sees Richards develop his sound to incorporate the dub-inflected techno textures of Rhythm & Sound whilst nodding to the catchy, yet bleak floorfillers of Trax, all inspired by the modern noir visual style of Michael Mann.

In between sets at both Berghain and Panorama Bar, The Roundhouse, Boileroom, Fabric and Melkweg, remixes have been traded with Breakage, Dave Clarke & Mr Jones's _Unsubscribe_ project, followed by a  EP on Hypercolour and a release for Doc Scott's 31 Records. His new conceptual album piece ‘You Were Telling Me of Mountains’ has just been released, backed up with a hefty run of more dancefloor orientated tracks across Creme's new Jericho One imprint, Darkroom Dubs and coming soon, EPM.
