LONDON:
The summer of 1666 was hot and dry. From the end of August, a warm southwesterly wind blew through London, feared by many as the bringer of plague. The danger of fire, on the other hand, was part of daily life for Londoners - matches were not invented until 1820, fires were started with tinder or with glowing coals that were transported from house to house in buckets. People often left the hearth fire burning overnight for convenience, and fires were not uncommon. The Great Fire broke out in the early Sunday morning of September 2 in the bakehouse of a royal baker in Pudding Lane near the Thames Embankment. The baker, Thomas Farynor, had probably overlooked the embers in the oven when he locked up his bakehouse that evening. The baker was awakened by the fire during the night and managed to escape with his family; his maid became the first victim.

At that time, it was common to build each floor overhanging the one below (frame construction). This type of construction caused the already narrow alleys to become narrower towards the top, and the houses almost collided at the height of a second floor. Although both the half-timbered structure and the clay-framed construction are difficult to ignite, defective spots on the houses in the poor quarter favored the spread of fire through flying sparks. Thus, the fire easily jumped over streets and alleys; it was able to spread quickly due to the strong wind and the easily flammable building materials of the houses, which were mostly made of timber frame.

Within a few hours, the fire destroyed the wooden-built houses of Pudding Lane. The Star Inn, a public house on London Bridge, burned down, and the fire spread to Thames Street. Commodities in the warehouses there, such as oil, hemp, flax, pitch, tar, rope, hops, and brandy, further fueled the fire, which spread to the adjacent wharfs where lumber and coal were stored. However, Sir Thomas Bludworth, the Mayor of London, who was roused from his sleep, said, "Pish! A woman might piss it out!" and went back to bed....
