The D3EP Lounge "Session 28"

This week we welcome a true selector and LBC favourite on the podcast!  Paul sent over these words about his musical journey to date;

I began buying records as a young teenager in the mid to late 70s, starting off with Soul, Funk and Disco, partly due to my Dad’s influence and taste, as he loved bands like Earth Wind & Fire, War and The Isley Brothers etc, but also through listening to tastemaker radio DJ’s like Robbie Vincent and Greg Edwards, as well as the numerous black music pirate radio stations of the day, and club DJs such as Froggy, Chris Hill and Bob Jones. My tastes grew to include Jazz, Latin and Fusion, and with a passion for new cutting-edge music developing, early Hip Hop and Electro, what is now known as Boogie, then in 1985…  HOUSE!

I started DJ’ing out in the early 80s, mainly at friends parties, progressing to warm ups at local Soul nights, before getting residencies at bars in London and Birmingham, and playing guest spots all over the UK and beyond.  

I was also co-organiser and one of the resident DJs at The Sands, the ‘pop-up’ gig across the road @Southport Weekender, which we did for 9 years until it moved to the new site in Minehead and am honoured to have played at the legendary Southport Weekenders since. I am also partnered with Nick Ferrara promoting Basement 108, a quarterly night in Glasgow, dedicated to Soulful Deep & House, where we’ve welcomed the cream of UK DJs like Neil Pierce, The Journey Men, Groove Assassin and Craig Smith to play for our knowledgeable crowd. 

I have also enjoyed many years doing internet radio before settling at STARPOINT RADIO where I can play all the music I love, always with a focus on new releases from contemporary Soul and Jazz, and the many shades of House music thru to vintage grooves from the 70s and 80s.

As a teen in the late 80s, James Kumo’s world was opened up by Kiss 100FM - still a pirate station at the time. “I don’t know how I got to know about it, actually. It was probably through a friend or someone’s brother,” he recounts. Recording shows on cassette decks and envying the friends’ older brothers who were old enough to get into clubs, he was enthralled by the rhythms of dance music straight away.

Kumo ventured into production for the first time in 2007. Though still learning the ropes, he drew from his lifelong immersion in dance music and quickly landed on his feet; his first releases, Kumomusic Vols 1 and 2, appeared on the Delsin Records imprint Ann Aimee. 

In more recent years, Kumo has introduced K.Mo, a new platform with which he explores deeper, more soulful house sounds. Under this alias, he released his first LP ‘Vision’ in 2020, followed by an impressive run of EPs. The Space Funk EP is the project’s latest showing, which features instrumental contributions from Byron the Aquarius, Tim Jules and Chris Bruining. All of this has been under the banner of Wayout Records, Kumo’s own label, which he envisions as a vessel for community and collaboration. “I want it to be not like a label who’s churning out music all the time, more of a collection of people making music we like,” he says. “More of a friendship group of sorts.

Whats shakin funky people?!  We are back with Volume 198 of the series, and we head to South Africa to welcome the deep house maestros, Exotic Duo to SRS!!

Exotic_Duo (Kgopotso Shongwe) & (Mxova_dj)
Duo based in South Africa who grew up together, deeply in love with house music from an early age. Mostly inspired by deep house, soulful house, funk/disco and electronic music. They decided to work together since they are both inspired by the same sound. Exotic Duo was formed mid-2007 when they saw a gap in the industry of making music, they started playing at Parties, weddings and events. Their inspiration came from both local and international DJ’s.
In 2009 they decided to move to music production and have managed to work with a few artists. In 2014 they released their first EP called "Rooted In Me" on Podomatic which was appreciated by a lot of people.
In 2017 they signed with The Hiive Media, a multimedia company based in Johannesburg (South Africa) and have been busy on a couple of projects in different fields apart from music. In 2018 they worked on a podcast 45BEEHIIVECAST under The Hiive Media which is available on Podomatic, Spotify and iTunes. They have managed to play live sets which are available on YouTube in different venues and giving people
that different sound and vibe.
In 2019 they realized their second EP "The Other Side" under Lisztomania Records from Russia.

Our guest this week is no stranger to our platform having been featured across both of our radio shows previously. Originally from round the way but now located up in Liverpool, T Sounds has been killing it since his last appearance.

Tom has recently released on Blur Records and Closer To Truth. His most recent release displays his signature sound. Crisp hats & dreamy pads unite on the Sanctuary EP on theBasement Discos. A 3 track EP which includes a remix from the bouncing house extraordinaire Hatt.D.
