Presenting the fourth offering from our solo EP series, this time from Adelaide’s own Subjoi. Titled Flashing Lights (HIM004), this curation is a selection of woozy melodic House coated in a Lo-Fi patina. Vocal cuts and driving percussion permeate three original tunes exploring the scope of moods, from deep slow-burners to exploding dance floor starters. The title track edit, ‘Flashing Lights’, punctuates it all with oozing soulful vocal samples and a riff catchy in its simplicity. Here, Subjoi brings together four pieces of ol’ faithful type House joints for club rooms and easy listening alike.

For home use only’ is an anti-club social, a chance to get to know someone/something. A series of transmissions purely dedicated to exploring the other side.

How about these precedented times aye? (Apologies if you’re overseas and still hurting from the unprecedented times). Things seem to be getting back to/close to the way things potentially were. You have been gifted a chance to carve out an idea of what you think life should be, and then actualise it. . . and I've got just the soundtrack for this transitional metamorphosis. Number 55 comes courtesy of the team captain of all-around good dudes, Mr. Xander Byng. A refined audible palette paired with a can-do attitude, Xander delivers on every front, whether it is DJ’ing (to people, on a dance-floor) or running a record label (Houses in motion // TIP!! Link below). Last year he put out his own mix series called Work it! (Link below), which focused on motivation and getting out there and doing some exercise. During those tough months of lockdown it was exactly what a lot of people needed, myself included. 
 
So, with his resume you’d think he would be able to deliver, well you’re absolutely bang on, and with the precision of one of those domino’s pizza drones too. The pizza is fresh and all the toppings are still in their right place, at your doorstep 2 minutes ahead of schedule. Xander has brought with him his prized A+ collection of beautifully resonating art works. This poetic cluster of music hits every emotion in your body as well as every corner of the audible earth. His ability to amalgamate tracks is second to none, the ground he covers in doing so is nothing short of amazing. You can hear the time and patience that he’s put into this mix and it will secure a spot in your existence rent-free for quite some time. Adaptable to almost any situation, there’s no right or wrong way to enjoy this mix so that part is completely up to you, all I ask is that you listen to it from start to finish. On that note.

Back Burners are the combined might of Don Blaster and Catalyst. Decades of sonic inquisition has ensured the nature of their religious endeavours remains subterrestrial. In the early hours the pair can be found tangled in the modular circuitry that weaves its way through their laboratory. 

The Anatomical EP is comprised of four slow-rolling tracks with a massive focus on soundscapes and rhythmic intricacy. Perfect for the late-night drive through space or a moment of absolution on the dance floor. Petiole's haunting synthscapes and syncopated percussion; the repeating tape clicks and reverberating gong that give Phloem a backbone; the build of the penetrating 303s whilst underwater in Pericycle and the sunrise state of bliss that is Primary Xylem. 

These technicians are the equivalent of a cosmic unicorn: keep your eyes and ears peeled for a rare and cathartic exposure to these mysterious crusaders.

Melbourne-based @HousesinMotion are back with their fourth solo artist EP after taking a short break following their first ever various artists compilation release earlier this year. Sticking to their ethos of releasing music from local artists, this time they're looking to welcome a fellow Aussie in Adelaide-based @Subjoi, who has been making waves of his own lately. Coming off of his most recent and extremely well-received release on Canadian label Heart to Heart entitled Love Shy, he presents an equally strong showing with Flashing Lights EP for Houses in Motion.

Usually known for tougher, upbeat drums and catchy vocal samples, he doesn't stray far from his formula for success thus far on this release. Our premiere, however, and the B1 on the record, 'Glowworm' takes a bit of a different direction. The drums, although still rugged-sounding with Subjoi's usual lightly tinged lo-fi flare, seem a bit more subdued here. The galloping rhythm and warm chords make the track feel slower than it actually is as the tempo is still very much in club territory. The tasteful use of understated breath samples paired with delicate keys and bewitching electric guitar help make this production just as good for an afternoon of easy listening as it would be in an opening set, or perhaps at the end of one. Glowworm is the clear standout here for us and this is a direction we hope to see Subjoi pursue more in the future.

Houses in Motion returns after a short hiatus with HIM005. A five track solo mission from HIM’s newest family member and Melbourne mainstay, Ryan Berkeley. Ushering you down the glistening nebulas of the milky way, smack bang into the middle of his much-anticipated first EP. 

The cosmic tour commences on Side A amongst the constellations. Twinkling and refracting light into peaceful, ambient hues of playful, bubbling sequences whose weightlessness is reminiscent of taking springboard steps on the moon. 

As the flipside draws near, the introduction of a subtle kick and sharp, pointed melodic riffs, repel you back through meteor showers and black holes to spit you out on Side B; a parallel dimension of hard hitting, intergalactic future house classics.

The people in the room began to dance, worries were left outside on the pavement and would not be collected until sometime tomorrow morning. All love within this desparate place was to be found amidst the room, what was external was to be forgotten and ignored for the time being. He had come here to dance with freedom and self preservation. This was his night upon the floor and the rest of society could give a damn how he moved to and fro with a swing in his step. 

Ryan Berkeley is set to release an inspired new EP on Houses In Motion in what will be the fifth outing on the record label. A strong release spanning a breadth of genres and style - this one is a treat.

Melbourne's Houses in Motion are a label we've had the pleasure of premiering music from before. Continuing to stay with their ethos of releasing only local, Aussie artists, they have the pleasure of welcoming fellow Melburnian Ryan Berkeley into their family. It's been a little while since HIM's last release but we're happy they're pushing only the best talent that they come across. HIM005 from Ryan Berkeley is a bit of an intergalactic journey that builds up as the record progresses.

Starting off with some lush melodies on the A side in the forms of 'Everything in Moderation' and 'All I Love', we see a subdued and dreamy side of the Australian producer. Floaty cosmic atmospheres and bloops take you straight into outer space. As the A side draws to a close this spaceship picks up some steam with 'Crutches'. Subdued squelchy melodies and arpeggiated riffs are the turning point on the record and there's no going back as the hard-hitting B side looms on the horizon.

B1 'JuKnow?' brings us straight into house territory with a chunky bass, chopped vocal loops and extra-terrestrial bleeps as we approach the blazing heat of the sun on this journey into outer space. Climaxing on the B2 and our premiere today, we feel the full intensity of the record culminate in 'You Dance, You Move'. A vocal sample tells you to do just that as heavy drums and an acid line start to melt your brain. You're fully in alien territory now and there's no turning back.

Australia’s Houses in Motion are back. Masters of keeping things irregular, they’re releasing their first record in just over 6 months. That’s no knock on them as we know how difficult it is to run a label, we’re just happy they’re back with new material. This time around they’ve enlisted Nice Girl, an up and coming producer out of neighboring New Zealand who now resides in Melbourne, to deliver her debut EP. The HIM006 6 tracker is a strong first foray with a variety of textures and sounds, showcasing a mature diversity.

Today we’re premiering the A2, “Calling”. Perhaps the odd one of the bunch as its got a mellow, organic feel to it as opposed to the more analog stylings of the rest of the EP. It caught our ear right away. Perky percussion sets things up with an ominous rumbling bassline hovering beneath for support. Big pads and rising strings create a brewing tension that ebbs and flows throughout, before dissipating towards the end. A great piece of listening music, we can see having this one on repeat for quite some time.

His voice was lost amidst the busy crowd, the room was full of noisy chitter chatter of which he was not a part. This was his loss, his sacrifice and his burden. Opening the door he walked out and down the stairs into the cold fresh air which was almost suffocating in the dense winter months.
