Haunted - Live

A windy night. A summer storm is brewing. A house. Old and rickety. Seemingly abandoned. This is Tom’s house. But the others don’t know that. They just think he found it on gumtree. And who cares if the roof’s leaking when the rent’s this cheap. Tonight is their first night there: Tom’s first night back. And he’s determined to make it right: to make up with Kelly, to hook up with Mia, to overcome what he’s been running from all these years. And even though the walls are whispering, and even though Daisy’s convinced the place is haunted, he won’t runaway. Not again. 

HouseWarming is the tale of three housemate’s first night in a shared house. The plan is to invite some friends over and have a few drinks. But plans fall to pieces when friends have this much history. 
It’s about independence, codependence, making family in friends, getting wasted and staying up til dawn. For all of them it’s a new start. But the house isn’t what they thought it would be. It rattles and creaks, all the taps leak: it is both shelter and antagonist, opportunity and regression.  

HouseWarming is a musical by collaborators Belinda Jenkin and Will Hannagan. It started its life at Theatre Works as part of their 2011 Musical Works season. This year it was redeveloped and taken to the New York Music Theatre Festival as part of their Development Reading Series with the assistance of Arts Victoria. This is ‘fast-moving and impressive musical storytelling’ (The Age) that needs to be seen and heard. Why? Because it speaks to our generation, it breaks down type and the shackles of the form whilst respecting its label of musical, and because it is theatrical. A haunted house, young people getting drunk, a tale of repressed abuse and familial rupture, plus a pair of party monsters. What’s not to love.
