HOW I MET THE BASS is a project I started in 2015. I thought it was nice to ask artists about their roots. Music that changed their life and had a big impact on their later doings. So I built the series around friends and artists I respect to make a colored showcase between Techno and House music. That´s what it´s all about. Simply tracks from your youth and I´m happy to have so many great producer, DJs and live-acts telling so many great stories.

3 QUESTIONS to KATE ZUBOK:

Q: Let's get into the mood for your mix. Why did you choose these tracks and what do they still mean to you today?

A: These were the first electronic tracks I had heard at an early age (4-6 y.o.) and got the most impressed from. To me they will always remain very special, as they are representing ageless, provocative and soulful, energizing and nostalgic sounds, which remind me my careless childhood.

Q: Do you still play some of those tracks in your DJ sets now?

A: Yes I do! And I love how the energy immediately rises when I play them. Music is like a time machine, it can bring you right back at the time when you first heard it. I also like to play old tracks because I was too young to rave on them when they came out.

Q: Which future Zubok projects are on the way?

A: I’m currently working on preparation for live performances and other new interesting projects. I’m also hoping to finally release my first video clip in the beginning of the new year, which I'm preparing already since a very long time.

Q: Let's get into the mood for your mix. Why did you choose these tracks and what did they meant to you once and still mean to you today?

A: I choose these tunes because although they don't represent my sound, they do reflect in various ways my approach as an artist these days. Needless to say, this music influenced my romantic journey with electronic music.

Q: Would you still play some of those tracks in your DJ sets today?

A: The answer is yes. Most have been dropped during the years in my sets. I believe that in the right moment, each track has its place during the journeys I try to create.

Q: What projects are you currently working on and what can we expect from you soon?

A: Last year my main focus in the studio was on creating the album which was released in August, while in 2023 my goal is to put out more singles which some already found their way to labels like Multinotes, Rebirth, Exploited, Monaberry, Live at Robert Johnson, and many more. Parallel to that, I plan to keep working with some of the amazing artists on my label Frau Blau. Furthermore, you can catch me play during the next months in Europe at some of my favorite destinations. I will also return to Latin America for a few shows, as well as debut in some spots in Asia which will be announced soon. Thanks to Marc DePulse for the opportunity to be part of this important platform.

A prime memory from our first Burn in 2019 is dancing at DISTRIKT for a Robot Heart tie-up with a big group of friends, full of joy and awe and acting like goofballs. That year we had camped at 10&K. Flash forward four years later, we found ourselves opening up DISTRIKT's 2023 season in their new home at 10&K. So much has changed in four years, both globally and personally as we've moved into the creation part of our electronic music journey instead of just being appreciators.

One thing that hasn't changed a bit is the joy and awe we feel being present in the dust with thousands of our closest friends and bringing those memories home with us each year as fuel. Thank you to DISTRIKT for giving us the opportunity to experience such a beautiful full-circle moment. These tunes are all about setting the groove as you begin a new journey.

Everybody loves blondes right? Well In the last few years we’ve become even more of a fan of the fair, well ish as Canadian born London based duo Blond:ish have captured our attention with their unique production recipe which focuses on the art of creating music that is organic and multi-dimensional. Provocative basslines contrast with smooth textures and haunting vocals to defy categorization as anything other than cool. 

Thus it is with great excitement we welcome the girls in for this weeks podcast after a huge 2012 wherein they stormed the scene with a series of big releases including their psychedelic influenced ‘Lovers In Limbo’ EP  on Kompakt  which showcased Blond:ish’s curiosity of the late 60’s musical movement, as well dropping stellar efforts for Noir Music, NM2 and Get Physical. 

So with a big year behind them and even bigger 2013 planned with an extensive set of tour dates including Flying Circus in Ibiza at the end of the month and the Chicago leg of the Electric Daisy Carnival, things certainly seem to be looking up for the duo.  Quirky and innovative, very much like their native city of Montreal and the organized chaos that have accompanied their sets there since they burst onto the scene with their acclaimed residency at the city’s Cherry Club, we think the mix they’ve delivered from a small village in deepest, darkest Mexico is the perfect thing to get you in the mood for the summer ahead.
