HOW I MET THE BASS is a project I started in 2015. I thought it was nice to ask artists about their roots. Music that changed their life and had a big impact on their later doings. So I built the series around friends and artists I respect to make a colored showcase between Techno and House music. That´s what it´s all about. Simply tracks from your youth and I´m happy to have so many great producer, DJs and live-acts telling so many great stories.

3 QUESTIONS to OBERST & BUCHNER:

Q: Let's get into the mood for your mix. Why did you choose these tracks and how did they connect you with the bass once?

A: The mix shows our transition from rock to electronic music. It consists of tracks from Indie, ambient rock, progressive- and postrock, as well as different genres of electronica. It resonates influences that guided us from our band era 2005-2009 to electronic music. At this time we also tried to incorporate synths and synthetic drums to our post-rock projects clearly influenced by acts like Radiohead, the Notwist or John Frusciante to name a few. Maybe one realises our shift from rock to electronic music with acts like modeselektor, console or pantha du prince, who became relevant for us because they didn’t change aesthetics in terms of atmosphere of our former musical taste and outcome. Without forgetting the routes in the epic sound walls of 2010s postrock and indie hymns - from where we derive as musicians - we still try to incorporate those elements into our music. 

Q: Reflecting the past 2+ years of pandemic: What did you do in this time and how did you handle lockdown and creativity in one?

A: On the one hand, the pandemic finally gave us the time to do music again, and realize a very big project like our second album „marble arch“. Since we normally both have day jobs beside the Oberst & Buchner project and the Heimlich Musik label, we finally had the freedom to get up in the morning and jam the whole day. We were not on the road at weekends so weekends where dedicated to producing music. In the first three weeks of lockdown we finished 10 remixes and an EP. Things that would have taken us a year normally. On the other hand it was hard to gain creativity for club music when clubs where closed and the most important part of clubbing, which is „being in a club“ was missing. 

Q: Talking about future projects: What's on the way, what's coming next?

A: Up next we release a remix for Dina Summer (Kalipo & Local Suicide) on Iptamenos Records. Currently we are working on an EP with vocalists Tobias Koett and Toby Whyle, And preparing remixes for Tosca on K7! an the band Nihils.

Euer Käpt’n https://soundcloud.com/rolandson war wieder viel unterwegs und hat neben reinlich Seemannsgarn auch taffe Haudegen und liebreizende Klabauterinnen an Bord geholt. Der Rumpf ist mit jeder Menge musikalischer Feinstofflichkeit beladen und auch die Gin-Vorräte sind gut aufgefüllt - also auf, auf zu neuen Ufern und hinein in die weite Ferne des Ozeans. 

Diese weite Ferne zieht nicht nur gestandene und oft schwankende Seebären wir euren Käpt’n an, sondern auch junge wilde Abenteurer, die auf den Soundwellen reiten und den Horizont berühren möchten. Ein eben solch waghalsiger wie liebenswürdiger Abenteurer ist https://soundcloud.com/robin_dey - was nicht verwunderlich ist, ist im die Sehnsucht nach der Weite ja schon durch seinen Wohnort in der Schweiz, also in den Bergen, mitgegeben. Doch wie jeder fachkundige Klönschnacker weiß, der Himmel ist überall blau und der Horizont is the place to be . . . Robin huschte 2015 ins Blickfeld eures Käpt’n und er nahm sich seiner gerne an und betrachtet auch mit ein wenig Stolz und einem freundlichen und breiten Lächeln, was aus dem Jung’ so geworden ist - musikalisch wie menschlich eine Bereicherung und mit Sicherheit in der Zukunft für die ein oder andere Überraschung gut. 
Mit seinem Mix nimmt er euch mit, lässt euch seine Weite spüren - die Sehnsucht nach Stille, wenn ihr die Augen schließt und euch davonträumt. So reiht er in ruhiger, gelassener Art wundervolle Soundperlen aneinander und transportiert das Gefühl des weiten offenen Meeres right direkt zu euch .. schließt eure Augen, lasst euch treiben und vergesst das leise atmen nicht.

Mit Franca’s „Reise durchs Regal“ präsentiere ich euch heute eine meiner absoluten Lieblingskünstlerinnen. Entdeckt habe ich Franca erst vor ca. 1 Jahr ... doch seitdem sind ihre Sets nicht mehr aus meinem Alltag wegzudenken. Besonders hervorzuheben sei hier das Fusion Tanzwüsten Set von 2016 und natürlich Kater Blau - Heinz Hopper Floor … was eine stimmungsvolle Reise.

Es war der Schulbusfahrer, der Franca mit elektronischer Musik anfixte – guter Mann. Das war 1996. 10 Jahre und einige Plattenkäufe später zog es die Münchenerin nach Köln, wo sie fester Bestandteil des Feines Tier-Rudels und WIR Schwestern-Kollektivs wurde. Wer die Dame einmal hinter den Reglern erleben durfte, spürt sofort, warum sie sich immer wieder die uneingeschränkte Aufmerksamkeit ihres Publikums erspielt: Sie ist der Crowd stets drei Platten voraus und legt House- und Technotunes in einer Mischung auf, welche ihresgleichen sucht. Franca ist ein begehrter Gast, aber kein bedrängter Star.

Aber auch als Producerin hat sich Franca schon einen Namen gemacht. Ihre erste Solo-EP „Epiphany“ auf meinem Lieblings-Label URSL hat gleich eingeschlagen wie eine Bombe. Auch hier wird wohl noch mehr zu hören sein … hoffentlich. 

Für sound(ge)cloud wollte Franca mal was anderes machen. Musik die auch auf dem Sofa funktioniert und das ist ihr mehr als gelungen. Seit einer Woche wohnt Franca nun im Amsterdam und beim Ausräumen ihres Platten-Regal kam ihr die Idee für den Mix … eine Reise durchs Regal zu machen. So entstand ein Mix aus alten und neuen Lieblingen und Fundstücken die eben in so einem Regal schlummern … entspannt, funky und doch mitreisend. Franca tausend Dank für diese unwiderstehliche Reise.
