This episode of Relegation Radio features Ian Vanek, known for his work as half of Japanther, which he co-founded during his time as a student at Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, NY — “If there was an archetypal 2000s art band, it was Japanther,” wrote Art in America in 2020 — and now Howardian, which released a brand new album, In the Lapse of Luxury, on Starcleaner Records this month. Vanek’s practice encompasses a fascination with song writing. printmaking and photography. He is largely informed by travel, resulting in work that tells the stories of worlds filled with play, amorous joy, wild abandon, and childish curiosity. Publications include the memoir, Puppy Dog Ice Cream: The Story of Japanther (Outlandish Press, 2021), and the zine 99mm, which published fifty issues over more than thirty years.
