Honnda's latest work functions as both a music-for-music's sake experience, and as the original soundtrack to the forthcoming independent game Ultimate Rivals: The Court from breakout game studio Bit Fry and its founder and creator, multi-media artist BXL Gotham. The Court is a reimagined NBA, NFL, NHL (and more)-licensed basketball game, the second in the franchise for the developers following their freshman entry, the hockey themed Ultimate Rivals: The Rink. The Ultimate Rivals titles are set in a near-future virtual fantasia where athletes compete for arcade-game-style thrills.

Honnda was recruited to be the musical artist-in-residence for the game series and to build its kinetic, futurist sound world. Guest vocalists in the release include his previous collaborator, the "Queen Of Queens”, Dai Burger and hyper-pop siren moistbreezy.

On the long-awaited Exaptations, Toronto-based composer Nick Storring presents two highly textural, side-long pieces. On “Field Lines”, originally composed for Yvonne NG Peck Wan‘s dance piece, Magnetic Fields, a certain fragmented, uncertain openness is conveyed: a series of brief, dreamlike clearings are vignetted by pregnant silences or various levels of waking or sleeping states. Storring plays with a variety of tonal instruments that swell and tumble along while being nipped at by expressive percussion. Organic clusters develop within event-based sequences, stretching attention across multiple timbres and rhythms. On “Yield Criteria”, shifting drones move about like independent layers of ice on a lake in the dead of winter, slowing crumbling, sliding, and cracking in perfect harmony. Storring has written for dance and other interdisciplinary settings, and here he brings the delicate resourcefulness of a skilled accompanist, as well as a narrative sense that belatedly, profoundly blossoms.

Forest Dreaming is a yoga nidra practice. Also known as yogic or contemplative sleep, yoga nidra supports active rest and conscious relaxation. Yoga nidra is a liminal state of consciousness between wakefulness and sleep that offers the opportunity to awaken and, at the same time, to dream. 

In Forest Dreaming, you will experience a guided yoga nidra meditation that explores the connections between language, ecology, and consciousness. It will take place lying down, so ensure you are dressed warmly and comfortably, with any bolsters, eye pillows, or blankets you may wish to use to support you so that you can remain still for the duration of the practice. 

You will be invited to form a sankalpa: a seed of heartfelt intention or resolve to sow in your mind during the practice. A sankalpa is a short sentence or phrase that speaks of an intention formed in the heart to create a change or an intention for your practice. It could be a statement about your nature or your purpose. Phrase it as a positive declaration or affirmation. The sankalpa does not take root in the thinking, intellectual mind; instead, try to hear your sankalpa as it comes to you. 

Through practice, every circumstance can become an occasion for awakening to the imbricated and simultaneous nature of realities whose connection is profound but often obscure to the ‘ordinary’ conscious mind that overlays what ‘is’ with concepts and beliefs. Here, you may find something of the wild profusion of meaning emanating from the enigmatic interstices of our lives, refracted into a seed and containing, to paraphrase Donna Haraway, a history of practices inside its coat.
