Following on from our announcement on Something Anorak a few weeks back, we are now delighted to welcome another new face to the fold. Tara Clerkin is a spellbinding mistress of chamber pop. A songwriter who has kept us captivated like moths round a lightbulb since we first heard her and we are looking forward to working with her over the coming year.

The music he makes today still retains a little something of his cradle genres while moving into the territory of synthesizers and intricate drum patterns. 'She Could Fly EP' is Patrick's first release.

Wenonoah – Purveyor of Fine Flesh Pop for Abstracted Humans

It is with great pleasure that we welcome Wenonoah to our ever-branching nest. She is totally unique; raw honesty channelled into pop, both from the chamber and the field. Her songs flow from the inside out. Sometimes dark, sometimes peaceful…sometimes funny but always essential. 

‘Insides: Something Funny I Ate’, first released last year, is a collection of songs that explore change and desire, transformation and stagnation. Embodiment, survival, asking what divides and what makes one of many. It is an album swaddled in understated majesty, and as soon as we’d been taken into her world we didn’t want to leave; so we’ve invited her into our own as a thank-you. 

We kicked 2015 off with New Year / New Noise 2 at the Arnolfini and to many, Wenonoah was the act that they couldn’t forget. All eyes on the lone figure behind a keyboard, standing still but channelling an energy that stunned a room. Much more of that to come.

Hive is a body of work that could only have been made by a band that has spent over a decade developing together. 8 songs of metallic future and cold heavy. We once described their music as 'transformers fucking to dub', and this is them doing it out in the open on barren land and it is beautiful.

Spectres were asked by BBC 6 Music to cover a Christmas classic. 

They obliged and, naturally, also went a bit too far by deciding to commit the atrocity to an extremely limited number of transparent lathe cut vinyl.

Each copy comes with it's own unique polaroid of the leg of 'The Boy'.

Spectres - Wonderful Christmas Time (Paul McCartney)

For this release, that coincidentally came out on  Record Store Day 2016, I spent about 3 months downloading as many of the thousands of songs released on Record Store Day 2015. I think I managed to find about 85% of them and it almost killed me. I may as well have stabbed myself in the ears and eyes with a spike of frozen shit.

I then made 'slabs' of noise by layering about 100 songs at a time on top of each other on Garage Band, creating 100 or so of these 4-5 minute slabs of dirge before sending them to Harry Wright (Naturals/Giant Swan) to try and make a song out of them all. 

Predictably, he came back with something really excellent, and then I probably went and ruined it by using the Cut Up Technique, going through all of the names of the releases and cutting words at random, forming them into some kind of gibberish that I whispered over the track.

Whoever bought the 7" also received our full back catalogue.

Thought I'd put it up today as it is the final day of our 5th Birthday Week, and seems like a good time to let people know just how stupid we (well, me) really are.

Howling Owl Records presents 'Music Is Dead' for Record Store day 2013. 12" vinyl: 100 copies only.

Following last years RSD special (http://www.howlingowlrecords.bigcartel.com/product/howling-owl-8-record-store-day-special-12-spectres-united-fruit-towns-fairhorns) we have decided that it would only be polite to offer up another special vinyl for this glorious event.

This year sees us release Music Is Dead Vol.1, with four bands completely contradicting that statement. Side A features the first anyone has heard from The Naturals in over a year; Its Teeth is a monster of a return and shows just why we think that they are genuinely the most exciting band on the planet right now. Spectres follow with another brand new song; a demo recorded shortly after the sessions that spawned 'Hunger', the critically acclaimed sell out EP (http://drownedinsound.com/releases/17520/reviews/4146139). Where Youth? shows that as well as loud, they can tone it down and write something verging on radio friendly..but not for long.

Oliver Wilde stokes the excitement for his upcoming album release (July) with Home, a song that further cements his growing status as a master songwriter who cleverly shrouds his widescreen appeal in lo-fi sparkle. Velcro Hooks finish things off with the original,unheard version of Yesterday's Man; a much rawer cut than the one found on their sell out EP Gymnophoria. 

Housed, as always, in lovingly hand assembled packaging and bespoke artwork; this is another release that emphasises just how strong the Howling Owl family is becoming.
