Mezcal Dreams 2

This is a bit of a new turn. 

Consider this the intermission between Oldboy and its sister EP. My work on the Oldboy follow-up has been sparse in the last two years. A large part of it is more or less where I want it to be, but I haven't had as much of a focus on music since around the time I finished Oldboy. To be frank, I think I have creatively outgrown a lot of what I was intending to do on the follow-up, even though I like what remains of it. I might put it out as an instrumental EP with the lyrics published seperately. I never really liked the sound of my voice rapping my lyrics, and honestly the writing and production were always my favorite parts. Rapping was more or less a necessity because I had stuff I wanted to put on wax, even though I didn't care much for my own voice spitting the words out. 

Once the Oldboy follow-up is finished, there is one other hip hop song I've been wanting to put out for a long time. Originally I conceived of it as a stand-alone track, but for a while now I've been considering it the epilogue to this duology. It's a big track: 14 minutes long and probably my most musically ambitious (and dare I say, experimental) work ever. I'm really proud of it, and even though I've written lyrics for it that I quite like, I'm not sure I want to tarnish the instrumental with my on timbre. We'll see how it all pans out. 

But when that track is released, I'm not sure what comes after. For a lot of my late teens and early twenties, I had big plans about what my discography would look like, but these days my creative energy is mostly placed into writing. Not just writing verse and chorus, but whole ass novels. I still really love writing verse and poetry, but as of right now, prose is my focus. As much as I would still like to assemble the records I have imagined myself making for a long time, there are only so many hours in the day. I'm not quitting music or anything, but it's currently on the back burner, and the music I'd be making now would be very different from the stylings on Oldboy and previous releases. These days I've been way more interested in texture-based genres: post-rock, ambient, noise, shoegaze, drone. I was already experimenting with some of this on Oldboy (especially Forever 21). What I would want to do in the future, is try to marry these genres with the stuff that I really cut my teeth on, hip hop (which is basically whatthe 14 minute track is all about). Once again, not sure if I would end up rapping on it, but I still have a lot of dope ideas floating around in the noggin. 

So, it's out of these new musical inclinations that this intermission came about. It's my first real foray into noise. It's quite brief, but I like it a lot.
