The Harmony

This piece is about escape. The image is of someone fleeing a violent encounter on horseback through a swamp. The violins were modeled after the rhythm of a galloping horse across wet earth.

2020 was a year that saw a new flowering of my inner world. I was living in my childhood home and during quarantine, I found it possible to immerse myself into this strange and beautiful place every day. This place had no name and I couldn't describe what it looked like, only what it felt like. These feelings became this music, and the rest of the music of Howls Road.

I read a passage in the Inner Chapters of Chuang Tse that read "One can dwell in the boundless place and make it their home."  This struck a chord with me, it described exactly this place I found myself visiting every day. A place that you can find anytime, no matter where your physical body resides. And so I named this piece "the boundless place"
