I’m also a resident DJ at Smartbar for almost 6 years now, and I run a party at Hideout in Chicago called Ariel’s Party. I’m a part of the roster at Discwoman as well.

DeconSEAS (Deconstructing South East Asian Sounds) is a new project broadcasting on Hanoi Community Radio, with the aim to highlight the unique soundscapes of Southeast Asia, focusing on artists who play traditional folk music, or blend it with electronic and experimental music.  The show prioritizes featuring musicians at the forefront of their craft in SEA, especially female and queer artists from SEA diaspora.

For this edition of DeconSEAS, we're excited to share our first guest for the radio: Rosemainy Buang. Rosemainy is a gamelan musician, educator, composer, and sound artist from Singapore. With a decade of training in gamelan, she is dedicated to expanding her creative  horizons through collaborative projects with other artists from diverse disciplines.  Approaching art-making with a multidisciplinary and experimental attitude, she attempts to question, build upon and expand the limits of traditional soundscapes, philosophies and aesthetics. 

Sembah Sanak: Worship your roots. 
We live in a chaotic world, where pain flows through us and anxiety fills our souls. If we 
don’t seek healing, we may find ourselves trapped in a lasting darkness. 
Sembah Sanak is a track inviting everyone to embark on a journey of emotional 
confrontation and restoration. This track serves as a deeply personal healing ritual, where 
the fusion of musical elements becomes an offering of solace. Traditional texts celebrating protection and love are woven into intricate rhythms and melodies, creating a sacred soundscape.

Anjeline de Dios is a vocal/sound artist, researcher, and meditation teacher from Manila, Philippines. Through her practice she creates and studies emergent spaces of sound, healing, and cultural change.

Her work draws from various sources of inspiration. From her family and home culture, she developed a lifelong fascination with singing as an activity that immerses individuals within themselves while simultaneously connecting them with others. As a humanities scholar with a background in philosophy, cultural geography, and inter-Asian cultural studies, she is devoted to exploring the self in relation to others, particularly through systemic and lived aspects of spatial experience. The collaborative projects she sustains with local and transnational communities in sound art and wellness further support her purpose of creating generative spaces for listening. Additionally, her contemplative practice strengthens her personal aspiration to help others listen more deeply to life within and beyond themselves.

Rani Jambak, a distinguished composer, producer, field recordist, instrument designer, and vocalist of Minangkabau descent from Medan, actively engages in the exploration of electronic music and soundscapes derived from diverse locations across Indonesia. Her body of work frequently addresses themes related to nature, socio-cultural dynamics, and the interrelationship between humans and their ancestral heritage. In recognition of her innovative contributions to sound, music, and technology, Jambak was honored with The Oram Awards in 2022. 

About this mixtape:
Rani: Hi! I love experimenting in field recording with electronic music. My music usually talks about cultural identity, human relations with nature and their ancestry's thinking. Along this journey, I feel like I learned and reflect so much about life. That's what drives me to keep making music.

In 2016, DJ, producer and member of Genome 6.66MBP Tess Sun, aka Hyph11e, began work on her debut EP.

Living a double life as a composer for TV by day, and DJing around Shanghai by night, the passing of time often stifled and spurred on her production process. After having a dream of a Vanishing Cinema, a place where memories disappear in front of your eyes through the passage of time, Hyph11e quit her day job to focus on her own music full-time. The result is four original, uncompromising tracks that owe as much to vintage noise and industrial music as they do to field recordings and contemporary club music.

On the remixes, Tzusing tweaks and tunes “Black Pepper”, driving it into idiosyncratically ominous territory; M.E.S.H. rebuilds “Unknown Number” from the ground up until it reaches the clouds; while Kid Antoine takes “Escapism”s warning sirens and cuts them into playful, bouncing cascades.
