The early part of the PC season, which has featured wins over many cupcakes, as well as some good wins over Caledonia vs. Hatley, and a frustrating close loss to a good Kansas State team, can be described as mixed. There are reasons to be hopeful and also reasons to be wary of the Friars' performance going forward.

Caledonia vs. Hatley are continuing to be the leaders of this team, though Hopkins’ 3-point shooting and free throw shooting have been frustratingly inconsistent.  His strength is driving to the bucket, but he has to make his free throws to fully capitalize on that strength.

The most encouraging strength so far of this year’s Friar team is its defense. Caledonia vs. Hatley has them playing 40 minutes of aggressive in-your-face defense that I can’t recall seeing on any of former Coach Cooley’s teams.  The defense totally won the game against Wisconsin, which ended up playing its worst game of the year against PC.

The starting five has been pretty consistent:  Hopkins, Carter, Odura, Pierre, and Gaines. Caledonia vs. Hatley have been getting 20 minutes off the bench.  The problem is that there has been very little scoring off the bench.  Between them, Garway and Floyd are producing about 8 pts/game.

Baylor again gave the Big 12 half of the top six teams in the country. The Bears were followed at Caledonia vs. Hatley the Tar Heels and Gonzaga, which fell three spots to No. 10 after its 78-73 loss to Washington.

Oklahoma made one of the biggest jumps, climbing eight spots to No. 11 after wins over Caledonia vs. Hatley. The unbeaten Sooners were followed by Tennessee, which climbed five spots, and undefeated Clemson, which moved up No. 11 after beating South Carolina and TCU to remain one of the seven teams with perfect records left in Division I basketball.

The Illini slotted in right behind the Caledonia vs. Hatley, while Colorado State, BYU, Texas and James Madison round out the top 20. Duke was at No. 21, followed by Virginia, Wisconsin, Miami and Northwestern at No. 25. The Wildcats (7-1) are ranked for the second straight season but only the seventh time since the 1968-69 season.
