OPLA is the duo of Hubert Zemler and Piotr Bukowski. In their music they reinterpret traditional Polish dances, such as the "oberek". On GTI, their album for Pointless Geometry, you can hear oberek phrases and tripartite metros embellished with electronic sounds. They create a plastic, surreal world rooted in deep traditions of folk music.

More melodically-evolved than their eponymous 2020 debut, it is an even more explicit example of the syncretic impulse that impelled these guys to form the band. Their basic notion was to explore the juncture between two streams of German underground sounds -- the Motorik 4/4 rhythms first posited by Can's Jaki Liebezeit and Kraftwerk's Klaus Dinger, and the sequencer-driven brain loops of early, experimental pioneers of the NDW, such as der Plan.

In 2018, Outlines released a cassette by Polish drummer Hubert Zemler in the groove series dedicated to mixing footwork with dub. Zemler brilliantly dismantled this idea by creating two unique hybrids at 160bpm. So when the idea for a groove series created by drummers came up, it was a natural choice for Outlines owner Pawel Dunajko to approach Zemler to take part in the project.

Groove 18.1, subtitled 'OCD Soundsystem', opens with a completely different register and aesthetic to outlines' previously released groove 8. The track begins with a slow minimalist tempo reminiscent of Andy Stott's deep rhythms. Zemler gradually incorporates individual intensity-enhancing sounds to situate a layered synth loop in the central part of the piece. In the final moment of the recording, against the backdrop of an ever-recurring random phrase, the sounds of piano, bass guitar and an effects-driven voice appear, evoking associations with post-classical music and kosmische musik.

The first part of 'groove 18.2 (Cowboy, Cable TV And Roller Skates)' could appear on any of David Holmes' albums for its illustrative nature. In the second part of the recording, all these cinematic ornaments fade away in favour of raw and hypnotic layers built on short synth phrases. In the last part, the density of the track becomes increasingly intense with a rising culmination abruptly ended by a few single sounds reminiscent of Massive Attack's 'Dissolved Girl'.

Groove 18 is Zemler's own vision and his journey back in time to sounds that evoke some form of vintage sentiment and shards of nostalgia. In contrast to the earlier footwork of Groove 8, the leap into the future is made here with an imagination firmly rooted in the past, revitalising and refreshing it. This allows new musical and surprising associations to emerge, where krautrock and post- classical intermingle with Andy Stott, David Holmes and Massive Attack.

Warsaw-based TAMTEN made his name appearing on Transatlantyk label, and together with his partner Fopa released acclaimed “Polski Dom” last year, successfully attempting to fuse Polish folk music with contemporary (post)house. “Wake Up!” is a strongly conceptual work, touching the notions of time and a blurred line between dreams and reality. Created in a specifically constructed environment filled with hanging medallions and gongs, “Wake Up” applies an array of means and techniques - from found sounds and field recordings, through obscure voice samples, to live drumming - to create a dream-like sequence of sounds, ranging from deep ambient to broken techno. Organic and deeply humane, it’s also at times strikingly otherworldly, reminding the listener that the world we live in might be just one of many…

1) this album is for connoisseurs only.

2) it contains free jazz, red wine, real instruments for real people, laptop and a bunch of field recordings (from railway stations or places nearby) and this moment when you wait to get from one place to another.

3) you don’t have to visit Pruszków to be there. now you have “zgubiłem się” (yayy) which smells like empty secondhands, frozen cookies from McDonald, cold trains, late trams and overcrowded busses.

4) Olczak’s over a year and a half struggle of making this nomadic album results in this collection of blurred, but somehow thick and electrifying pieces straight from the post-saxophone swamp.
