Since slipping out on Leng last year, Paul ‘Mudd’ Murphy’s first collaboration with singer/songwriter David Harks, ‘Susta’, has become a much-played modern Balearic classic, with DJs and listeners alike responding to the track’s attractive blend of sun-kissed nu-disco instrumentation, warming melodies and deliciously evocative lead vocals from Jaanika Leino AKA JaneLy.

Now the track returns for 2021 in the shape of two superb new remixes from Chicagoan deep house legend Ron Trent, who four years ago delivered similarly ear-catching revisions of Mudd and Pollard’s ‘Far Away’ as part of the 10th anniversary celebrations for Murphy’s Claremont 56 label.

As you’d expect given Trent’s impeccable track record over the last three decades, both revisions are stunning. He begins by eking every last ounce of soul from Leino’s brilliant vocal on a remix that’s warming, deep and luscious. Combining elements of Murphy and Harks’ colourful, synth-heavy original mix – including the lusciously tactile bassline and boogie-style synth flourishes – with his own yearning chords, hand percussion sounds and a shuffling, samba-tinged house beat, Trent re-imagines ‘Susta’ as a future vocal deep house classic. Melodious, musically intricate, infectious and summery, it’s a remix for the ages.

It comes accompanied by a Dub Mix that successfully shows off the intricacy of Trent’s production and additional instrumentation while keeping both eyes firmly on the dancefloor. Beginning with effects-laden synth sounds reminiscent of the mid-‘80s proto-house classics by Paul Simpson, Winston Jones and Boyd Jarvis, the mix sees Trent skilfully add selected snippets of Leino’s lead vocal to a backing track rich in delay-laden synthesizer sounds, reverb-rich chords, echoing percussion hits and chords so warming they feel like a late-night, loved-up bear hug for your ears. Like the A-side vocal version, Trent’s dub is breath-taking and spine-tingling in equal measure.

Slow-cooked over more than a decade, the eight tracks that stretch across this double 12” pack are the realization of Tom’s unique vision of modern dancefloor soul, with lush live instrumentation and deviously catchy hooks. Boasting a near encyclopedic knowledge of decades of club music, Tom draws on influences like Patrick Adams & the Mizell Brothers to build a sound that’s both reverent to the past, but feels extremely fresh and immediately timeless.

The lead off singles ‘Times Are Changing’ and ‘Please Take Me There’ and respective remixes by Harvey Sutherland, Makez and Sizmo have already garnered huge support, and ‘Holding On’ the beloved original House Of Spirits single from 2020 appears with a shiny new mix. Karen Marr & The Bare Essentials - We Are Family (Antes e Depois Groovy Mix)

New edit out! A cherished  first collaboration between myself and my zouk padawan and good friend Vrøge. On top of our regular zouk discussions, we've also shared many special moments on the dancefloor together, so an edit together has been on the horizon for a while now!

This one is a gorgeous, bumpy 90s digi-zouk floorfiller with gorgeous horns, sultry vocals and a hefty low end. Self released in 1991, 'Zouk +' was sadly only album put out by Georges Pronzola (aka Gustamberg), would have loved to hear more of his beautiful music!

When planning a visit to the Netherlands I sent over the track with the idea of creating the edit together in person. Mesmerised by the track Youri quickly agreed to the idea, after which we of course completely forget about the whole thing and I flew home 😂. 

However, eventually we remembered and had a blast collaborating online to create the edit! After a few iterations we feel it's finally ready to share, and were delighted to early support from Hunee a few weeks ago! Hope you enjoy :)

Up next on Phonica Premieres is a seriously groovy cut from International Soleil Band off the new Soundway 12".  Ta Lassa is an '80s West African Disco crossover from the International Soleil band straight outta Guinea. Composed by Gnamakoron Sidi Diabaté it was originally featured on an album released in 1983 by French Warners offshoot WAM (West African Music) - a short lived label that recorded about 20 releases of West African music released in France. Also Featuring Mory Djely Kouyate this track was a staple of the 22 band's repertoire in the 1970s (in which many of the ISB played) - famous for their recordings on the legendary state-run Editions Syliphone label. We've decided to premiere the extended (DJ friendly) Hide & Smile edit on the A side. There's throbbing bass and keyboard interplay punctuated by classic Guinee guitar lines, metronomic drumming and 80s synth sweeps eventually drops into a more recognisable Guinean vocal outing.
