From Kiev to Kansas City, 20-somethings the world over tend to traffic in the same sort of distractions from modern life: clothes, sneakers, cars, love. Mascot, the debut LP from Ukranian guitar and drum machine noise makers, Bichcraft, holds these things for what they are: fleeting diversions from the bleak realities of modern times and an increasingly uncertain political landscape. That the band composed, wrote and recorded Mascot’s eight songs in its hometown of Kiev only adds to their authority on the matter.  As Dima Novichenko sings in the album opener ‘Didn’t Know,’ “There are erased numbers on your road… We better cover our heads.”  
This is heavy, paranoid music in the shape of frenetic jams like “A4,” in which waves of dual-guitar noise accompany a digitized howl, chanting from deep inside the mix. Often, guitar interludes emerge quickly and take a song in a new direction as they do in "Might Night Dicks."  On this track Novichenko and Bichowski display an extensive post-punk guitar vocabulary. They are as fluent in Psychocandy as they are early SY.  After hearing the record’s interwoven guitar lines, it should come as no surprise that the two originally met up to play garage jazz before Serzh Kupriychuk and Jenia Machina joined to handle bass and drum machines, respectively.   
For its brutality and chaos, Mascot has some undeniably pretty moments: the lilting guitar refrain that kicks off “Bushes,” for example, or the often poetic imagery in Novichenko and Bichowski’s lyrics about the natural world, love and decay. Still, these nods to beauty always lead back to fractured songs about suburban scenes where mankind’s disregard for nature is just a warning of greater dangers looming on the edge of town.

If the bleakest of the bleak came banging at your door would you take them in, scrub them off and let ‘em shine for everyone to enjoy? Growing up in England’s provincial north on daily doses of 80s weirdo punk, classic guitar solos and total boredom, the scene was always set for some kind of escape. This is what we’ve been dealt with today: David Kelly (drums), Paul Thomson (Bass) and Paul Rafferty (Guitar, Vocals) are Bad Meds and these days they call Liverpool their home. Their debut is a black and white affair, a haunted fast-punk record that slows down into a witch-fest of high-gain reverb-laden guitars, power drill drums and vocals shrouded in dark clouds of analogue delay. It harks back to when punk hardcore was a result of young and enthusiastic experimentation and not a series of rehashed replications of its previous guises.

Hoax Apocalypse is a sludgy hangover dream gone wrong where early Mudhoney and later period sans-metal Black Flag collide. You’re Not My Friend, Man is a break-neck anti-ode to Dave Longstreth from Dirty Projectors that documents an alienating dig at an audience member (Rafferty) in Liverpool. Release The Bees is a pained traipse through a gallery of insomnia-induced memories. The City Against Itself is about the jewels of British cities currently being buried beneath luxury student flats. It’s Grim Up North is a slow trudging re-imagining of The Justified Ancients of Mu Mu‘s (aka KLF) classic dance anthem. Bad Meds’ Rafferty heard the tune in primary school on a Now That’s What I Call Music compilation and couldn’t believe that a real song would mention places that he’d been to or heard of. Fast forward to 2015 and Bad Meds play the song to present their north as it is today: Bleak but beautiful. See you on the M62.

Bad Meds’ self-titled debut EP is Maple Death Records’ third release and was mastered by Robert Whiteley. Recorded in part by Darren Jones at Elevator, Liverpool and by Bad Meds. It comes as a limited edition transparent (100 copies) cassette tape, inlay printed on 175 Marina Conchiglia paper with lyrics insert. Design by Paul Rafferty. Mp3 download card is included.

Danish four-piece Yung prepare for their UK festival debut this Friday, with new single ‘Blanket’ - the perfect follow up to their March Alter EP and another glimpse at the band’s ability to mix brash, persuasive Nordic punk with a rare sense of rhythm and melody.

Announcing their arrival with ‘Nobody Cares’ at the start of 2015, Yung released their international debut through Tough Love Records in March, which, in addition to selling out its limited run of vinyl ahead of release, drew comparisons to acts like the Replacements, Ty Segall and Jay Reatard, and saw them pick up acclaim from the likes of The Guardian, 6Music, Radio 1, DIY, Stereogum and NME, amongst many others.

This followed with the band making their debut UK live shows, the first of which became instantly infamous after a power-cut 20 minutes before they were due to go on stage at the Old Blue Last forced the band to up sticks and, in true DIY style, move the show to the Shacklewell Arms for a sold-out put-together show; Yung took to the stage just after midnight, with Toronto noise rockers METZ in attendance lending a spare hand in changing strings as the show reached a chaotic conclusion.

Formed in the summer of 2013 as a vehicle to escape the bewildering frustration of everyday life and young adulthood, the Aarhus-based group's new single, ’Blanket’, which retains the angst and feverish energy of their EP, but marks an impressive progression in production, with 20-year-old frontman Mikkel Holm Silkjær making a remarkable leap forward with his songwriting too. 

Following a European tour with The Districts, Yung will be returning to the UK for shows at this week’s Great Escape festival before headlining a one-off London show on Tuesday 19th May at The Stags Head.

‘Blanket’ b/w ‘Burning Bodies’ will be released digitally and as a limited run of 500 vinyl copies through Tough Love Records on 24th July 2015, with the first 100 (available only through the Tough Love site) being a white pressing and the remaining 400 black.
