Finding freedom in a pandemic?

Researcher Jonathan Stoltz from SLU shares his current research on how environments can be designed to cater for the universal human needs, with a focus on the theoretical framework of the Perceived Sensory Dimensions. We hope to inspire planners to creatively integrate evidence-based design in their planning practices to create supportive environments for health and wellbeing in our urban landscapes.

Designing environments for the human needs

How can we research and how do we research, in SLU Landscape, with the objective of creating a more social sustainable and health promoting society? Human Land podcast, together with researchers from SLU Landscape, will explore different perspectives, learning about different ways to frame sustainable projects, valuing different disciplines and definitions. Researchers from SLU Landscape will all present a research project, that will be illustrated with a physical object that can represent your research idea. We will welcome:

Anna Bengtsson (Landscape architecture with evidence based and Health Promoting Design, Department of People and Society).
Burcu Yigit Turan (Planning in cultural environments, Department of Urban and Rural Development).
Elizabeth Marcheschi (Environmental psychology and Health Architecture, Department of People and Society).
Ishi Buffam (Ecosystem ecology, Department of Landscape Architecture, Planning and Management).

Together, we will discuss about what we could learn from an interdisciplinary perspective on research that could be applied to create a dream society.

We explore topics related to outdoor environments for health and wellbeing with experts in the field and apply an environmental psychology perspective to understand people and planetary health.

Live pod: Learning about research on landscapes for a sustainable society

This episode is an introduction to Series Two provides an overview of what environmental psychology is, how it has formed through interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary perspectives, where we find ourselves today as a global society trying to meet planetary health needs, and how environmental psychology can help provide a lens for system change. 
In this episode, we discuss environmental psychology as a discipline and how over the last 50 years it has grown rapidly due to the declining health of the natural environment. We suggest why integrating an environmental psychology lens to help support system change towards healthier societies can support global change through the application of Bronfenbrenner’s ecological systems theory. We apply the theory as part of a socio-ecological approach to frame the episodes in series two to explore the question:  How can environmental psychology as part of transdisciplinary research, foster system change for healthy societies?

In this episode, co-producers and co-hosts, Hannah Arnett and Amanda Gabriel are in conversation to discuss how the episodes in series two will be examined from a different level of Bronfenbrenner’s ecological systems theory. This structure will enable an analysis of an environmental psychology lens at different systems levels from a Microsystem, Mesosystem, Exosystem, Macrosystem, and Chronosystem perspective. Of course, we are unlikely to find one answer, but we hope the exploration of topics will widen a view globally, in an accessible way, on how we can study individuals and groups interactions in social, cultural, and physical settings, to find meaning and practical solutions for changing systems in the context of creating healthier societies, through the value of outdoor spaces.

Intro: How can environmental psychology help understand system change for healthy societies?

This is the first episode of season two. Amanda Gabriel, today´s, host, explores the fascinating world of collaborative and transdisciplinary research where we value the experiences of individuals in the city. We visit the location at the PEARL (Person-Environment-Activity Research) laboratory in London, and we are joined by Professor Nick Tyler, the laboratory's creator and director.

Much of the way we design cities and develop urban dynamics is heavily reliant on assumptions regarding the movement of larger groups of people, transport, and cars. While these strategies have resulted in functional cities, they often do not reflect the needs of individuals. There are many ways in which our current urban design practices fail to account for the impact of the city on the health and well-being of the population. For example, inadequate living conditions and differences in access to space across socio-economic areas, insufficient quality and access to green spaces, exposure to noise pollution, urban heat islands, and a lack of spaces for walking, cycling, and restorative activities all contribute to a less healthy urban environment. To create cities that are more sympathetic to the health of every individual, we still need to develop a deeper and more complex understanding of the experiences at a micro-level and the different conscious and subconscious processes of perception.
In order to understand these interactions, we have the PEARL LAB at UCL, London is a one-of-a-kind research facility that creates life-sized environments such as town squares, railway stations, or high streets and manipulates various environmental factors, such as sound, light, and scents, to investigate how individuals perceive and interact with their surroundings.

In this episode, Professor Nick Tyler explores:
-  how the PEARL research supports the understanding of pedestrian/walker needs in the city
-  what we know of how individuals interact with their everyday environments from an evolutionary perspective
-  how this knowledge may be used to gain insights for an urban planning transformation.

Musicians for urban planning: valuing the subconscious individual experiences in the city

This is the second episode of season two. Human-land explores the fascinating world of collaborative and transdisciplinary research where we value the macrosystem perspective for spatial justice in our cites and regions, joined by Dr Matt Finch, an Associate Fellow at the Saïd Business School, University of Oxford and an expert practitioner in strategy and foresight, which includes scenario planning. We particularly focus on the Imagine project in Europe, a research program funded by Horizon 2020 to explore alternative ways of understanding and addressing territorial inequalities in Europe, aiming to identify policies that promote spatial justice and socio-economic well-being.

This episode focuses on spatial justice and how macro-level policies influence the individual and community experience. We explore to what extent spatial planning can guide places for spatial justice and explore an understanding of how an environmental psychology lens could be applied through exploring a sense of place and examining the concepts of spatial justice and territorial cohesion. Through a fascinating exploration of scenario-based planning for spatial justice - we delve into concepts of interconnected citizenship across territories, now and in the future, to support spatial justice at a macro level. Can a feral future be tamed through a psychological evolution of place?

In this episode, Dr Matt Finch explores with Human-land co-producer, Hannah Arnett: 
- Why the facilitation of spatial justice through spatial planning can be considered as a health issue to decrease regional and global inequality in place
- How environmental psychology perspectives can support a viewpoint for spatial planning through the concept of sense(s) of place
- How scenario planning can help rethink systems required at a macro level for fostering development of healthy societies

An unwritten future: spatial justice and realms of citizenship

This is the third episode of season two. Amanda Gabriel, today´s, host, explores the fascinating world of research and practice about schoolyards for children´s health and wellbeing. Today, we have the privilege of speaking with two remarkable individuals who are at the forefront of this movement. First, we'll hear from Researcher and Associate Professor Märit Jansson, whose work revolves around creating welfare landscapes and promoting sustainable greening of school grounds. Later, we travel to Paris and dive into the Oasis Project, an inspiring project that's transforming schoolyards into vibrant green oases, and joining us for that conversation will be Raphaelle Thoiller, the dedicated Project Leader of Oasis.

Bringing magic to the schoolyard: creating oasis for children’s play, health and learning

Environmental psychologist, Professor Lindsay McCunn (Vancouver Island University, Canada, Director of VIU’s Environmental Psychology Research Lab and co-Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Environmental Psychology), is in discussion with Human-land to explore the usage and benefits of environmental psychology through the development of methods, key topics, and the challenges in developing transdisciplinary research to contribute to the development of healthy societies.
