Sylvia Rivera (1951–2002) was a pioneering Puerto Rican–Venezuelan American transgender activist who fought for the rights of the most marginalized in the queer community—especially trans people, drag queens, sex workers, and homeless LGBTQ+ youth. Present at the 1969 Stonewall uprising, she co-founded the Street Transvestite Action Revolutionaries (STAR) with Marsha P. Johnson, providing shelter and advocacy for queer youth. Rivera challenged mainstream gay rights groups to include trans people in their agendas, making her a crucial voice in pushing the queer civil rights movement toward true inclusivity.
