Mona Yim debuts on Rekids with ‘Gotta Do This, Gurl’, featuring remixes from Radio Slave.

Born and raised between Singapore and Germany and now based in Berlin, Mona Yim spent time bouncing between the clubs of London, Berlin, and Paris while honing her craft, culminating in a recent remix for DJ Seinfeld’s ‘Tell Me One More Time’ on Ninja Tune. Now readying her debut solo release on Rekids, Mona Yim delivers two dreamy house cuts for the imprint, backed with a pair of remixes from label-boss Radio Slave.

Leading the release, ‘Gotta Do This, Gurl’ brings crispy, bouncing drums alongside moody pads and subtle vocal chops, building up to an emotive breakdown. Radio Slave beefs up the drum patterns with breakbeats for his remix, adding additional atmospheric FX to existing melodic elements for a chunky, driving track. 

‘Dots Obsession’ sees floaty percussion, gentle synth work and vocals working in tandem to craft a soft yet evocative house jam. Injecting a pumping 4/4 pattern alongside elements of the original, Radio Slave’s interpretation brings the energy levels up with pitch-perfect dub FX and swirling synthesis.

Music to make people dance with big smiles on their faces. With a penchant for strong groovy base and melodies with "a nice bit of tension", Arkadyan and Demayä set about work on their collaborative E.P. Esperanza: “In an early mix of the title track, we used a sample of Manu Chao’s voice, saying ‘esperanza, esperanza’, but a chance encounter in Dubai with mezzo soprano vocalist Yana Mann changed the course of the E.P. Inspired by the trumpet melody and the beat, Yana Mann came up with a vocal line and the result was a one-shot success. One enlightening taxi ride with Jean Claude Ades later and things started falling into place. The result is a miniature collection of “octopus rhythms”, with organic percussion and electronic beats jostling for attention with a plethora of live instruments and on-the-road pocket-mic field recordings.

Angelos returns to the Stereo MC’s’ connected label with a superb new EP featuring two hypnotic house cuts.

Angelos is a respected producer and DJ who has been a mainstay of the electronic music scene in his native Greece for some time. While a key player in the Greek market, he's also taken his talents globally to some of dance music’s go-to hot spots such as Ibiza, New York and London. He has released on labels like Saved, Armada, Rise and of course connected in the past, with his last record for the UK label dropping exactly two years ago. ‘Black Sheep’ was hugely well received at the time, picking up support from the likes of Dixon, Black Coffee and Danny Tenaglia and this latest offering is sure to follow in its footsteps.

The release opens with title track ‘Babel’, a deep cinematic offering with squelchy acidic synths, rising percussion and a plaintive female vocal refrain that hangs in the air. Understated and mesmerising, this is another emotive winner from Angelos. The second of the two cuts comes in the shape of ‘Radar’, a more propulsive and direct affair that journeys into darker musical territory with jagged synth rhythms and a brooding sense of tension.
