It was in 2011 that Dutch pair Lars Dales and Maarten Smeets quickly broke through in the electronic music scene. Since then they have become known for their widescreen approach to making and playing club-ready grooves. From deep to disco, tech to soul, they join the dots between the past and the present with their own sense of storytelling and do so in clubs around the world, as well as in their own studio. House might be the root of the @damswindle sound, but it takes nourishment from a much wider world of music.

It was their early, high impact tunes such as 'The Wrap Around' and 'The Break Up', that got dancers all over the world in a frenzy. Since then, the pair has constantly evolved and matured and continued to draw on all musical niches. Building bridges between them, their landmark 2018 album High Life or their ‘Coffee in the Morning EP' both furthered their take on house music with a real sense of timelessness and class.

Since 2013, the pair has also established their own Heist Recordings as a well respected label that is home to the majority of their own originals, though other underground mainstays such as Aus Music and Classic Music Company have also come calling. Heist is more than just a label, though - it is a breeding ground for talents old and new; somewhere talent is nurtured and allowed to develop. Label showcases and special projects such as the yearly Roundup EP; where all artists from the past 12 months remix each other after a random selection process, furthers the family vibe and helps Heist stand out from crowd. Artists such as Nebraska, Adryiano, Kassian, Demuir, Makez, Max Graef, Pépé Bradock, Nachtbraker, Matthew Herbert, Ge-Ology, Byron the Aquarius and many more have all contributed, proving that it is a place for unrestrained creatives to be free with their own sonic visions. The label looks as good as it sounds, too, thanks to visual artist Bas Koopmans's standout artwork designs.

Proof of Dam Swindle's widescreen approach to production is their long and talented list of collaborators, which includes the likes of acclaimed musician, Eric Clapton and John Mayer collaborator and Blue Note artist Tom Misch, US talent Seven Davis Jr., instrumental collective Jungle by Night, plus Marc de Clive-Lowe, Jitwam and Lorenz Rhode. Next to their own originals, a broad spectrum of artists have asked Dam Swindle for some of their special remix magic: on labels like Strut and Soundway they have reworked the legendary Pat Thomas, aka the ‘Golden voice of Africa,' and gave his single ‘Yamona’ a contemporary electronic edge, as well as The Mauskovic Dance Band’s track ‘Space Drum Machine’ and plenty more artists like Kerri Chandler, Mayer Hawthorne and Tom Misch. As their talent for bridging genres from all over the world continues to attract global attention, high profile projects keep rolling in from all points on the musical globe.

Dam Swindle are famously avid collectors of both old and new records, and it shows in their DJ sets, which keep you on your toes as they move freely and skillfully through different times, places and sounds. Rather than limiting themselves to a certain feeling or mood, Detroit Swindle can call on classic house, obscure disco, African funk, soulful techno and plenty in between, all with the aim of making those special moments that crowds never forget. It is for that reason that their name has become a real stamp of authority and invention in the dance music world. Whatever they do, then, this pair do with irresistible charm.

Theo Parrish grew up on Chicago house parties. He went to art school in Kansas City, and then moved to Detroit. His eclectic DJ sets in Detroit in the late ’90s and early in this millennium are legendary. 

“Love of the music should be the driving force of any producer, performer or DJ. Everything else stems from that core, that love. With that love, sampling can become a tribute; An expansion on ideas long forgotten, reconstruction, collage. Using the same understanding openly and respectfully can turn DJing into a spiritual participation. Because of our weekly 2-hour radio show, making and releasing mixes is something we don't get around to often. They tend to require too much energy and often end up feeling ephemeral, a drop in a bucket that's already full to the brim.

This 5.5 hour mix is a live recording from us, Paul Raffaele & Barbie Bertisch, DJing at 718 Sessions on Sunday November 21, 2021, a gig we recently played that meant a lot to us. Benny Soto and Danny Krivit will celebrate their 19th anniversary next week and the party has long served as a beacon of light in our world: a place to learn, be with chosen family, release the pressure and experience joy.

This lineup was originally booked for March 22, 2020 but it was cancelled due to COVID. Luckily, the same lineup was revived for the party's return to indoor dancing, taking place at Good Room in Brooklyn. This night was particularly special because it was the first time we would play 718 Sessions, our favorite party, as a duo.

In a pivot from what one might expect from our sets, we made a conscious effort not to play any Garage or Loft classics to widen the musical offering of the party and avoid overlap with Danny in the main room. Some mixes are great, some aren't, but in a bit of a protest to today's world digital perfection, we've kept it all in there and serves as a record for one of our favorite nights DJing together ever.

We recorded line in from the mixer but also the sounds of the room, blending music and crowd together and resulting in what you'll hear throughout the mix. It's an effort to capture some of the room's energy and not just a collection of songs one after the other.

Our style is representative of an amalgamation of the DJs we grew up listening to and studying, most intensely: Joaquin 'Joe' Claussell, François Kevorkian, Danny Krivit, Colleen 'Cosmo' Murphy, Louie Vega, Dope Jams, Theo Parrish, but there are many more. Thank you for the inspiration.

The tape recorder was running, this was about 3a.m. on a Chicago night 2001. My friday night party, "The Hole". We did this party for about a year in Chicago, it was private. I gave Toby many of these recordings, he named this tape like many back then I made by what songs struck him the most. This night is so clear still, many great moment and memories This first from the main boxes of my cassette collection will be an endless series of tape transfers of my music journey through life.

Ryan Bishop is behind one of the most creative and consistent multi-modal musical platforms out there. Dream Chimney (which hardly needs introducing), was certainly a big inspiration for 5918mins. and we are very happy to have him onboard. 

DJing himself under the name "The Beat Broker", Ryan developed a propensity towards Balearic sounds, which seemed to fit perfectly with the current time of the year. We are also very impressed by Ryan's consistency in digging and playing high-quality newer releases (which only makes sense if one one is interested in the musical, rather than the collectable worth of records).
