'one thousand birds symphony' is a collection of musical compositions and bird symphonies recorded and collated by the artist between March and December 2020. Constructed around field recordings of individual birdsong and exquisite choruses made from dawn 'til dusk whilst in isolation in deepest darkest Devon and inter-laced with thematic melodies and arrangements from his One Thousand Birds' album.

The album was recorded at a time of disintegration and derailment where human activity was for the most part suspended leaving a deafening silence, a sacred space filled with intricate birdsong and the exquisite voices of a thousand feathered choristers. The troubadours of hope.

“The philosophy of birds - their Iridescence, endurance, vulnerability and strength and their musical integrity is something to behold. They truly are masters in the art of life (and flying:) and have much to tell us. This has been a challenging time for so many. These are my letters from isolation and this my tribute to the birds. Their majesty saved me from myself and I owe them much. May there always be birdsong above the battlefields.” G

Artrock musician, singer-songwriter, guitarist and producer, GRICE hails from South London where he started his musical journey as drummer in a number of post punk bands. His music has been described as ‘a restless and challenging cocktail of electro-acoustic glitch, art-rock and avant-pop synthesis.

KARL (World mix) is dedicated to the late, great and sublimely wistful Karl Wallinger (World Party, The Waterboys) who sadly packed up and flew off from the planet this year (March 12th, 2024). 
Written by GRICE whilst enduring ‘hurricane Karl’ and in residence at Swanston House in deepest darkest Devon.

KARL is now available on Bandcamp and will be officially released on all digital platforms on 3rd May 2024 via hungersleep records.

"The year 1998 found me buried deep in the deepest darkest heart of the Devon (shire) in Swanston House. 
This was the year that Hurricane ‘Karl’ swept in from the Atlantic and across the moors and knocked on the doors and windows of the nation.
I remember capturing the raging storm, recording its howls and whistles and the torrential rainfall which all feature on the track .
The song was born that night and then shelved until now.
It is also dedicated to the all inspiring enigma that is Karl Wallinger.
26 years on and the terrible news that Karl had passed away only aged 66 years.
I had met the man and seen him play a few times, most notably at Glastonbury festival in the late 90’s? 
when he honoured us and the acoustic stage with his World Party presence..
Ever the consummate professional, though he was being electrocuted every time he stepped up to the mic (yes it was a wet year) and power was lost, 
he continued the gig un-plugged… and it was great and wonderful in equal measures. I talked briefly to him after the show…but I remember no words (being under many influences at the time).

Karl Wallinger has been and is a true inspiration to me, not only for his wonderful poetry, song writing excellence and skill but also for his ability to write, 
produce and record the songs and release the albums himself…(enlisting the help of some awesome musicians) - he was the band, when the band were not available (playing all the instruments when needed).

There will * ‘follow days of kings, Empires and revolutions’ *
But as you say Karl… * ’Blood just looks the same When you open the veins’*
Where ever you may be... out measuring the stars…*
I will always cherish your music.

Art Rock musician GRICE returns with his second album Alexandrine, which builds on his highly-regarded debut album Propeller. His music has been described as ‘a challenging cocktail of electro-acoustic glitch, art-rock and avant-pop synthesis tempered into passionate and well-crafted songs.’   

With GRICE taking centre-stage on guitars and vocals, Alexandrine features sonic innovator Richard Barbieri (Porcupine Tree, originally from UK electro pioneers Japan) on keyboards and as co-producer on a numbers of tracks. The 12-track album was mixed by Steve Jansen (Japan/Rain Tree Crow) who also lends his unique percussive input, tonalities and treatments to the work.

Siobhan’s early performances found her on the coffee house circuit of New York. From these beginnings she went on to play larger gigs both in America and at home, performing at festivals and folk clubs. Siobhan has had radio play of her songs on Cardiff Radio and on BBC Wales through BBC Introducing's Adam Walton.

NOTES:

So the birds are hanging out on the telephone wires all around me taking in the Sun, preening. chattering. buzzing. glitching - The telephone wires create Staves - musical score lines which they populate and inhabit in a mischievous way. 
I took some photographs and video on my phone and realised they were adopting a melodic stance that I translated into a midi refrain and then develop the track around this thematic melody. 
There are a lot of bars of repeated refrain but I just wanted to celebrate the positions of the birds and the melody that it summoned.

Constructed around field recordings of individual birdsong and exquisite choruses made from dawn 'til dusk whilst in isolation in deepest darkest Devon and inter-laced with thematic melodies and arrangements from his One Thousand Birds' album.

NOTES:

The sight of hundreds of thousands of starlings gathering to fill the winter skies with their otherworldly shape-shifting in the form of spectacular murmurations is undoubtedly one of the wonders of the world. 
The sound that these birds create are astounding in themselves - true glitch, their clicking and stuttering inspired me to pair their chattering with the sounds of static and more industrial kinetic sounds.
The track again features the beautiful cello work of Eliza Carew and the arrangements were inspired by the drama of murmurations.
Luca Calabrese completes the mood with muted trumpet which breaks through the static and crackle as though the needle has dropped on to a well played vinyl recording.
