Seattle native Mathew Anderson is a prolific and experienced electronic musician with releases on Suburbia, Plastic City, Uniting Souls, Supremus, and Get Physical, under his own name and as Not Boyfriend Material.

Written in the winter of 2020, these songs were composed in the 5 days before each cycle of Mathew’s chemotherapy treatments while undergoing radiation therapy five days a week for throat cancer. These seemingly impossible conditions underscore Mat’s determination to create under imminent threat. Despite the challenges of treatment, Mat still managed to craft well-recorded and beguiling dance music. Much more can be said about Mat’s journey with these recordings, however, the result here is a series of tunes that truly encapsulate Mathew’s high standards of songwriting and production.

All of these tunes were produced with outboard synthesizers and drum machines. “Still Lost Always” carries a warm, vintage
charm of analog hardware synths. Its lush chords envelop the listener in a sonic tapestry. On the flip side, the “Quinault” intro beckons with arpeggiations recalling early NovaMute, as though tuning into a lost
frequency from the past. The beats are delicate yet driving with vintage drum machines invoking a sense of retro-futurism. Layers of hazy, synth staccatos and lush pads hold a dreamlike quality.
Pezzner’s remix brings this tune into his quintessential lane with 4/4 drive and otherworldly, even eerie, jazz brass soundscapes and crescendos as only Pezzner can. His decades of friendship and reverence for Anderson’s art are evident in this meticulous rework.

Seattle’s Andrew Sutherland, under the name Secret School, has spent the past 15 years crafting a sound that's as diverse as it is danceable. Born as a solo project in Boston, Secret School has transformed into a source of meticulously crafted records. This includes a trilogy of full-length albums released on the esteemed Seattle label Hush Hush, alongside a prolific output of remixes and guest appearances. 

Secret School has also fostered a strong local collaborative network. Most recently, he teamed up with another Seattle uber-creative (and beloved Hunt & Gather mate) Hanssen for a dark, techno-infused EP on Otake Records. Now, with a renewed focus on immediacy and dance floor energy ("writing more sentences than novels" as Andrew puts it), Secret School joins forces with Hunt & Gather to release this syncopated and infectious “Narcissus” that nimbly interweaves cut-up vocal melodies and melancholic and jazz-adjacent electric piano work. Andrew wisely returns to Hanssen for an even more floor-friendly expansion on the original chord theme, adding warped legato vocalizations and a touch more space and grit. The two versions balancing each other perfectly on this beautiful and concise 2-tracker.

The title track of this release, “Protection” combines contemporary classical aesthetic inspired by artists like Philip Glass and John Cage with thick house percussions and a rolling bassline.  

The flip side, “Cognac” builds on repetition with feedback and distortion while disco drums and horn stabs lead the way.

Shaw Island is the smallest of the San Juans. No tourist accommodations. Not many roads. Only one store, plus an outfit that makes fish tags. Only 165 people live there year-round. Mostly nuns, it seems. Until 2004, the island’s only store and ferry terminal were operated by the Franciscan Sisters of the Eucharist.

We had been camping there for three days, playing in the driftwood, when a man stepped out from the woods one morning and sat down with us as if it was any other Tuesday. He sat quietly for two full minutes, while we looked on, astonished, then he finally spoke.

“Pezzner. I see it, you are Pezzner.”

Before he said that, he already seemed like a seriously weird dude. Scruffy, new clothes gone tattered, smelled a little. Didn’t make much eye contact. He cradled a cup of coffee and explained himself, or tried. He used to live in Seattle, doing work that was “technical, very,” but he’d moved to the island some time ago. He doesn’t remember exactly when. The problem, he said, was the voltage. Being around the lights and machinery gave him headaches, it hurt his eyes, he heard voices in the buzz, voices that told him to get away.

Here, he hides out in the Cedar Rock Reserve in the south part of the island. Foraging. Staying away from people, mostly, though in colder months he sleeps under the porches of the low-key millionaires who keep places on the island, but are hardly ever there. He said he was a musician, or “used to be,” or “sort of is maybe.” He brought some equipment, but only uses it two or three times a year. After a while, he says, it makes him tense. The headaches and voices come rushing back and he has to pull the plug.

He finished his coffee, accepted a hot bowl of oatmeal from us, then walked back into the woods without saying another word. Two days later, we were at the ferry dock when he materialized again, with a dirty padded envelope.

“Pezzner. Here, music, and documents. From an old session, a night session. And also, your bowl.”

The envelope contained a pile of hand-drawn ideograms and a single DAT. (I had to borrow a DAT machine.) On the tape was a single three-hour performance, non-stop, intact except for some noise and glitches. The tape was dirty, and had at one point been wet. The songs you hear on “Puerto Toro” are edited excerpts from this performance.

In the spring of 2017 Doza (Carlos Mendoza) was combing the the beach of Inapupan, a small island in the Philippines, when he saw something both strange and familiar: a weathered bit of shell peaking out of the sand with orange and ivory tiger stripes. He recognized it as the armor of a nautilus, one of the planet's oldest and deepest-diving animals. He held it in his hand, imagining the bioluminescent monsters it’s creator might have witnessed during its dark, cold dives. “Nautilus” is a latin word derived from the ancient greek “nautilo” meaning “sailor.” A sailor himself, Doza arrived home inspired to soundtrack this creature’s funky nautical journey. 

Electronic musicians today have access to a vast ocean of sounds from soft-synths, soft-samplers, mobile apps, boutique hardware and modular synths. When Doza began making music in the late 90s as half of LawnChair Generals (with Peter Christianson), the equipment available was expensive and cumbersome by today’s standard. In a way those limitations were a blessing in that they forced the Generals to extract as much function and creativity out of each piece of equipment as possible, and to learn their instruments inside and out. 

To stay focused on The Nautilus, Doza eschewed soft-synths and complicated outboard set-ups for the sounds from one of his first pieces of equipment, the PC2x. This tank-like stage keyboard was created in 2001 by Kurzweil Music Systems, a company founded by renowned futurist Raymond Kurzweil and Stevie Wonder (yes, that Stevie Wonder).

Although short on sounds relative to other larger keyboards of the time, the PC2x has the famous Variable Architecture Synthesis Technology (V.A.S.T.) and, in the hands of a tinkerer, is capable of morphing, organic, other-worldly tones. The result of this self-limited production technique applied to the deep-sea daydream is The Nautilus, an immersive dance floor voyage complete with evolving drones, pitching and swelling textures, and growling encounters in a swirled up auditory expanse. All of this sits atop a disco-tech structure and latin battery that is vintage Doza, supporting a locomotive synth bassline that dives and rises again like the intrepid little creature of the deep that inspired it.

"Whether or not we are aware of it, most of us have beamed life into otherwise still objects with our minds since childhood. Once personified, those things are free to become our beloveds, or our nemeses. Our friend-things are everywhere: waiting dutifully in a closet, standing mute in our childhood toys, or suspended in our photos. Some friend-things can come even closer to a kind of life with a little electricity, and help us build things, play games with us, or sing us songs. Andy, Wally and Ray are old friends of mine. I brought them together to get a feeling back, and to do what they do best. It's a reunion song. They are kind-of imaginary, yes. But the music we make is very real."

Following Doza’s EPIC theme “The Nautilus” comes the warm and uplifting single-tracker "Andy, Wally & Ray".  
As where "The Nautilus" was an exercise in self-limitation, using only sounds from one keyboard, "Andy, Wally & Ray" brings three key instruments together again: the Alesis Andromeda A6, Waldorf Microwave XT, and Ray Kurtzweil’s stalwart PC2x (hence the title). Here, Doza illustrates the concept of electronic instruments as friends, complete with personalities and their own voices to be discovered and celebrated. With crecendos a plenty, "Andy, Wally & Ray" walks listeners through choral peaks and valleys with layers of blissful electronic nuances perfect for dance floors and headphones alike.

together lately, I was approached by a man who would blend
right into the neighborhood, layered in flannel and
sweatshirts for sleeping. Rough, but for his shoes. (Never
cheap out on anything that separates you from the ground.)
“Pezzner,” he called out, from a safe distance. “What did the mangrove say to the marauding hordes.” My soul left my body for a
moment and my voice responded on its own. “Petrichor.”
He caught my eye, nodded, left a padded envelope on the ground and vanished.
The envelope had passed through many hands, slipped into the bed of a ferry-bound truck, passed from one fellow traveler to another,
stashed under the counters of anarchist bookstores, left tucked between books at Little Free Libraries. The greenish stains suggested that
at one point it had been swum across a lake. Another DAT, contents encoded here unabridged, and a letter from someone who called
himself The Sentinel.
The Vessel lived out his days on Shaw Island, under a canopy of trees that gets smaller and smaller every season. His condition the same,
any electricity lit his brain on fire, could only bring himself to compose one day a year, only at night, out of sight. Until he met The
Angel, an eccentric with means, who built for him a device.
A Faraday Cage to block all electromagnetic emissions. Burlap walls, for atmosphere. A system of pulleys and levers, wood and rope, all
running into a box that sat outside. An entirely mechanical control surface. No electrons in here. The Vessel lit fires, watched the
shadows dance, closed his eyes and disappeared into the motion for hours at a time. The Sentinel came every morning to change the
tapes. The Angel watched and pondered, his plans unknown.
The box sat sealed, bare except for another set of ideograms, scratched in day by day over time. Inside, the usual bedroom-producer shit.
Outside, the ideograms told a story, passed from the Vessel to the Sentinel and drawn by the Angel, of a man who became another
creature. Alert to the lowest frequencies, feeling music deep in the soil below their feet. Music that brings messages, from distant friends,
warning of new creatures and the danger they brought. Skin alive to the world, so sensitive it can detect the landing of a single fly. A
mind capable of keeping a map of the world inside. A mind that can look in a mirror and see a soul it knows well. A mind that can
grieve.
After processing its contents, I filled the envelope with granola bars and walked it down to the market. The clerk gave me a knowing
look as I placed it on the counter behind a stack of pork rinds from the previous century. As I walked out, a young man carrying a plastic
bag and wearing impeccable shoes walked in.
