This event took place in Dizzy's Den at the 58th Monterey Jazz Festival, September 19, 2015.

September 19, 2015 marked the 60th anniversary of the recording of renowned pianist Erroll Garner’s Concert by the Sea. Recorded in 1955, it was one of the earliest local jazz shows on the Monterey Peninsula that impresario Jimmy Lyons produced in the years prior to his founding of the Monterey Jazz Festival.

While Concert by the Sea became a runaway hit for Erroll Garner and Columbia Records, and is considered one of the greatest live jazz recordings of all time, the full story of the record and its impact on the world of jazz has never been told.

The Erroll Garner Jazz Project is now working to permanently preserve the cultural and musical legacy of Erroll Garner and make his previously hidden archive available to the public, music lovers, and students of jazz.

Panelists include renowned pianist and Monterey Jazz Festival performer Geri Allen; four-time GRAMMY Award-winning music restoration engineer Steve Rosenthal; UCLA Professor of American History and author of Africa Speaks, America Answers: Modern Jazz in Revolutionary Times Robin Kelley, and Monterey Jazz Festival board member Jim Costello, who attended Erroll's original Concert by the Sea performance.

Moderated by ethnomusicologist and Erroll Garner Jazz Project Manager Jocelyn Arem, they discussed the origins of this legendary concert and its influence on decades of jazz musicians, including those performing on the Monterey Jazz Festival stages today.

The making and mythology of John Coltrane’s timeless recording A Love Supreme began 50 years ago this year. It was not like any jazz before—it sounded like the black church, Coltrane’s tenor was intense and urging, like a Sunday preacher. The music sounded deeply sincere. The liner notes called the album a “gift to God.” It had with a chanted section (the first time Coltrane’s voice was heard by many people) and an inward-looking, prayer-like ending. The words on the cover carried a message of divine dedication and universal love.

A Love Supreme is a four-part suite, recorded by Coltrane’s Classic Quartet (McCoy Tyner, Jimmy Garrison, Elvin Jones) in a single afternoon on December 9, 1964 and released a few months later to universal praise: two GRAMMY Award nominations, Record of the Year according to DownBeat readers, who then handed three honors to Coltrane—Jazzman of the Year, Tenor Saxophone, and Hall of Fame induction.

Fifty years since, A Love Supreme has ascended in legend and influence, reaching far beyond the jazz world. The album is now a cultural icon on a par with the most cherished recordings in rock, hip-hop, and other styles. In complete form, few dare to perform or record it. Most musicians see it in a hallowed light, meant to be heard, not interpreted.

The Monterey Jazz Festival celebrates the golden anniversary of A Love Supreme in the Coffee House Gallery with a special exhibition of images telling the story of the album’s making, including many shot by famed jazz photographer Chuck Stewart who was present during the album’s recording session.

On Sunday, Septyember 20 at 2:30pm in Dizzy’s Den, saxophonists Ravi Coltrane (son of John) and Rudresh Mahanthappa joined GRAMMY-winning jazz historian Ashley Kahn in discussing the creation and status of A Love Supreme, with music and video excerpts.
