As the video is called untitled #8 i decided to record myself saying "eight" then heavily processed it into 8 drone loop tracks, recording and mixing as i viewed the video, watching the form emerge...

The Assignment: Compose a 2.5-minute soundtrack to complement a work of silent video art.

Many thanks to the San Jose Museum of Art for inspiring and encouraging this project.

This week’s project involves writing music to accompany a short video. The video is “Untitled #8, 2004″ by the artist Josh Azzarella. His original work is silent, and we’ll be adding music to it that complements the source material. Do note that the video is intended by the artist as a “Never Ending Loop.”

The instructions are straightforward:

Step 1: Watch the following video.

Step 2: Compose and record a piece of audio that matches the video in length.

Step 3: Upload your piece of audio to the Disquiet Junto group’s SoundCloud page, following the instructions below.

Step 4: Listen to and comment on the other tracks posted by your fellow Disquiet Junto participants.

Background Information: The “Untitled #8, 2004″ video by Josh Azzarella is part of the permanent collection of the San Jose Museum of Art in San Jose, California. This Disquiet Junto project is the result of an invitation by the Museum for me to develop a sound installation to be displayed on its second floor from October 2014 through February 2015. Tracks submitted to this project will be considered for inclusion in that installation.

Restrictions: Please do not, at the museum’s request, post the video online with your audio.

How I 8 My Way Out Of The Chrysalis [disquiet0138 - Videosonicvoid]

I reside in a small isolated coastal town in Australia and my "neighborhood" consists of beach and bushland. often in the late afternoons i will take a stroll down the walking track as the sun is going down and you can hear insects, native birds and other wildlife with the hiss of the ocean in the background... as it gets darker the place gets quite spooky ;-) so for the right channel i processed the field recording into drones using pitch shifting, formant filters and reverb to give it that ominous feeling...

This week’s project is about everyday sound and processing the present.

Step 1: Read all the steps before initiating the project.

Step 2: Trace a path on a map that will take about three minutes to walk and that will end where it began.

Step 3: Walk that route and record the sounds you experience.

Step 4: Create an original monaural recording that is the result of that field recording being processed without the recording being edited or otherwise shortened, lengthened, or reorganized. This result should, naturally, be the same length as the source recording.

Step 5: Create a track that has the original audio in the left channel and the processed audio in the right channel.

Step 6: Upload the finished track to the Disquiet Junto group on SoundCloud.

Step 7: Listen to and comment on tracks uploaded by your fellow Disquiet Junto participants.

Length: Your finished work should be about three minutes long.

Deadline: This assignment was made in the evening, California time, on Thursday, November 6, with 11:59pm on the following Monday, November 10, 2014, as the deadline.

Disquiet Junto Project #150: Sonic Perfume
Record a subtle personal mobile score.

The instructions for this week’s project are as follows. Special thanks to Jorge Colombo for inspiring the idea.

Step 1: Consider the time you heard quiet music and didn’t know where it came from, only to realize you’d left your MP3 player running in your pocket.

Step 2: Record a short piece of music with that as the intended purpose. That is, imagine a world not too far in the future when people regularly have a quiet music, a personal score, surrounding them, just as one might wear perfure or cologne.

Step 3: Upload the finished track to the Disquiet Junto group on SoundCloud.

Disquiet Junto Project 0166: Slow by Steps
Take a pre-existing track, slow it in descending states, and then add something to it.

This week we’re slowing down an ancient piece of audio, dating from 1910, and adding sounds atop it to create one continuous composition.

Step 1: Download at http://goo.gl/aMlHXm a public-domain recording of Eugène Ysaÿe performing “Rondino” by composer Henri Vieuxtemps. 

Step 2: Choose a short segment of the recording, roughly between three and five seconds. Label it as Segment A.

Step 3: Create a Segment B by slowing Segment A to half its original speed.

Step 4: Create a Segment C by slowing Segment B to half its original speed.

Step 5: Create a Segment D by slowing Segment C to half its original speed.

Step 6: Create an underlying foundational track by stitching instances of A, B, C, and D together in that order. Recommended for a five-second segment is Ax4, Bx2, C, D (or AAAABBCD), which would be 100 seconds.

Step 7: Create a new piece of music by recording accompaniment to add to the foundational track, which will otherwise remain unadulterated.

Ghost Ship In A Storm Pt2 [disquiet0166 - Slowbysteps]

excerpt of a  modular synth improvisation made after (barely)waking up just before midnight tonight, switching the gear on then pressing record right on 12am and seeing what came out for a few minutes before editing it down to the 1st minute and uploading it without listening to the end result... now i'm going back to sleep so i'll be interested to hear it in the morning... anyway it's when i'm in the half awake/half asleep state that all sorts of mind "glitches" happen ;-)

Sheer Bellish Miasma [disquiet0178 - Sepulchrabells]

made in the early hours of the morning after another sleepless night in my current residence which is right on a main road and also next to the train line. traffic & rail sounds were recorded with a microphone out the window and then sampled loops  were layered at different pitches and speeds under the main recording and subjected to reverb, delay and granulators with a synth drone for added "nightmarishness" . this track is an accurate representation of the sounds in my head as i lay on my bed in a delirious half dream state and the always constant flow of traffic 24/7 zooms past and hits the pothole conveniently located right outside my window... welcome to my personal hell ;-)

"The seventh Junto project is a shared-sample project. Everyone will work from the same source audio, which is provided below. You will take the provided sound sample and from it make an original work. You will do this only by subtracting sound from the sample. You won't add anything to it. You won't slow it down. You won't speed it up. You won't cut it up, and you won't otherwise reorganize its contents. You won't play it backwards. You will only "remove." The word "remove" is up for interpretation -- but generally speaking, I'd say that it means various acts of lowering the volume of a narrow or wide band of the audio spectrum for either a short or long period of time. And, of course, "lowering the volume" can mean be interpreted to mean "muting." The act here of "removing" is the sonic equivalent of sculpting something from a marble block."

Brief moments of consciousness during drowning [disquiet0007-subtract]

The ninth Junto project is a shared-sample project, though participants have some choice in the source material. Each participant will produce a single track that combines a source recording of bird song and a source recording of acoustic guitar. Four samples are provided: two guitar, two bird song. You will select one of the two guitar samples and one of the two bird-song samples. You will employ only those two samples in the production of your track. You can do whatever you want with those two samples (process, contort, edit, etc.). The goal is to explore the very different origins of these sounds: one human, one avian.

Sun chamber [disquiet0013-wildup]

made by importing the text as a RAW file into Audacity, then timestretched using Paulstretch. File was then cut into several loops of varying sizes which were re- pitched up or down  then imported into Ableton and run through various effects and mixed in real time (hence the mix being not that great, as it was done in a rush through crappy computer monitor speakers, so apologies to your ears and music taste ;-) ) vocals were made by choosing a couple of words from the text put in a text to speech program... this is my  lame attempt at making techno... oh well...

We're continuing the theme of "creative reuse" this week. In past Disquiet Junto projects we have reworked audio files, and in the process of interpreting a photograph as a graphic score, some participants treated the image file as abstract audio. This week, we'll be interpreting a text file as sound.

Please copy the instructions to this project and save them as a text file. You will then open that file in one or more pieces of audio-processing software. The resulting sound will serve as the foundation of your track. You can only use the sounds resulting from the text file in the process of making your track. You can manipulate the sounds, and you can use multiple versions that result from different pieces of software, but you cannot add any other sounds.

i haven't read the book (i will, i promise!) but i decided to reimagine the source quote to make it that the plane had landed upside down in the stream and was slowly filling up with water, Turners breathing getting more panicked until he drowns...  apologies to William Gibson for deliberately misinterpreting his work and being so morbid ;-)



This week's project is inspired by an aside that occurs at the opening of chapter 17 of William Gibson's classic cyberpunk novel Count Zero, originally published in 1986. The chapter is titled "The Squirrel Wood." It opens as follows:

"The plane had gone to ground near the sound of running water. Turner could hear it, turning in the g-web in his fever or sleep, water down stone, one of the oldest songs."

This idea of water running down stone, of a gentle but insistent natural stream, being one of the "oldest songs" is explored further in the chapter in various subtle ways. The Disquiet Junto project this week is to explore that idea: that there is music in the natural environment. We'll makes songs from running water.

The instructions are as follows:

Step 1: Locate and make a field recording of source material that involves running water. It can be a stream, as in the Gibson book, but it needn't be natural. The sink, a toilet, a hose in the backyard — any such source material would be fine.

Step 2: Extract a segment of the recording. That segment will serve as the basis for your composition, as its foundation. It will provide both rhythmic and melodic material. You can either use one long piece of the recording, or you can create the foundation of the track by combining and looping one or more brief segments of your original field recording.

Step 3: Add elements and treatments to the foundation recording of running water. Do so with the intention of highlighting the water's internal sense of rhythm and melody. Do not embellish so much that the foundation recording becomes unrecognizable. 

Potamophobia [disquiet0029-countzero]

took  three short  looped snippets from the original sample, pitched them up and/or down and ran through filter delays and reverb ...   an attempt to communicate with the spirits hidden within the frequencies...

This is a shared-sample project. The sample is the opening jingle (or "sound logo") for the excellent Chicago-based series called Radius. The series is broadcast in Chicago at 88.9 FM. Its jingle is titled "Radius loop."

You will make an original piece of music in which the sample will serve as your sole sound source. Your track will open with the jingle/logo running in full. As it comes to a close, you will segue into an original piece of music built from a transformation of that jingle/logo. You can transform this source audio as you please, but you cannot include any additional sounds.

Background: The Radius show's goal is "to support work that engages the tonal and public spaces of the electromagnetic spectrum." The goal of this Disquiet Junto project is to explore the idea of a radio show's theme song, its jingle/logo; we'll do this by imagining that the jingle/logo is in fact the subject of such a show's entire content, rather than simply its opening introduction.

Disquiet Junto Project 0048: Fraternité, Dérivé

This is a shared-sample project. We’re going to celebrate the dual forces of the phenomenon known as the netlabel and of the Creative Commons license that allows for derivative works. We’ll do this by reworking music from an example of the former that employs the latter. The assignment this week is simple. Please download the following three tracks from the netlabel Three Legs Duck, based in Paris, France, and combine them into a new track. You can process the sourced audio in any way you choose, but you can’t add anything to it. Note that the tracks are available for a price named by the purchaser — this includes paying nothing at all:

the text was then decoded into audio by an online morse code generator via

the resulting audio was the only sound source used and variations of it were then edited, pitch shifted and cut into loops representing the various "instruments" with the original source sound as the backbone of the track.

"This week’s project explores invokes Morse Code for its rhythmic content. The instructions are as follows: Select a word or phrase. Encode that word or phrase by the Morse method. Record a rhythmic foundation in which the dash is represented by a long beat and the dot by a brief one. Use that rhythmic foundation as a loop for the length of your track, at the speed you desire — speed can vary over the length of the recording. Record accompanying drone/melodic material that takes the underlying rhythm as its compositional foundation."
