Since the release of his last album – 2017’s Finding Shore, a collaboration with Brian Eno – pianist and singer-songwriter Tom Rogerson’s life has undergone a number of dramatic transformations. While writing his new album Retreat to Bliss, Rogerson had a child, lost a parent, and received his own diagnosis of a rare form of blood cancer. The new decade brought him from Berlin to the Suffolk of his childhood, composing profound pieces of minimal songwriting in the church next to his parents’ home. 

Rogerson studied composition at the Royal Academy of Music under mentors like Harrison Birtwistle, and he made his live debut as an improvising pianist in 2002, before releasing an improvised record with Reid Anderson (Bad Plus) and Mike Lewis (Happy Apple, Bon Iver) in 2004. He formed the band Three Trapped Tigers in 2007, expertly blending elements of electronic, jazz and noise rock into a cohesive whole. The band earned a reputation for innovative live shows and went on to perform and collaborate with artists like Brian Eno, Deftones, and the Dillinger Escape Plan. It was working with Eno, another Suffolk native, that eventually led Rogerson back to his roots and back to a place where he could write Retreat to Bliss, his solo debut album.

“All my life, the piano has been my constant companion, my confessor, my best friend, and my worst enemy,”  Rogerson explains. “I’ve always written music on and for the piano, but it felt too personal, too private to release.”

Indeed, listening to Retreat to Bliss feels almost like eavesdropping, as though you’re crouched in the belfry of a Suffolk church, bearing witness to a form of musical bloodletting. For the first time in his noteworthy career, Rogerson has combined masterful piano playing and subtle electronics with the texture of his own voice, an attempt to express deeply private emotions that were difficult to articulate using instrumental music alone. 

“The last few years have brought some struggle, some joy, and a lot of change. My response has been to retreat to what I trust the most: the piano, my voice, and the landscape I grew up in. That’s how the album got its title, and how I came to be ready finally to release a solo record.”

The eleven tracks that make up Retreat to Bliss were recorded by Leo Abrahams (Brian Eno, David Byrne, Grace Jones) over the course of just a few days, a process that emphasized spontaneity and the artist’s own commitment to improvisation. 

The opening track, “Descent”, begins with a series of spare notes suspended like icicles, an inhalation of breath audible in the void. The emotional piece builds in intensity until Rogerson’s masterful piano playing has completely taken over, conjuring sonic images of rainfall on glass. The piece blends seamlessly into the utterly gorgeous “Oath”, the first track to feature Rogerson’s earnest and unaffected vocals. The collection draws the listener in further with songs like the contemplative “Toumani”, inspired by the music of the Malian kora player of the same name, and the centrepiece “Chant”, in which Rogerson quietly pleads, “Please don’t leave me / in this perfect place.” The album finishes with the climactic “Retreat To” and the brief outro “Coda”, a revelatory diptych that unfolds like a confession, furious and mournful one moment and in the next, simply questioning.

Secular yet devotional, intensely personal yet profound, the experience of listening to Retreat to Bliss seems to evade characterization. It’s physical and emotional, a glimpse into the mind of an artist who has chosen exposure over withdrawal, who uses his command of the piano to chart an unflinching path forward, never looking back.

‘Love's Not Enough’ gets straight to the point, as a rapid trance of recurrent electric guitar riffs and an addictively relentless beat dominates the senses. Davis’ vocals emerge from a time decades past, resonating with an echoing intensity that peaks in the chorus alongside synthesised specks of nostalgic indie-pop in the form of flying synths and running percussion.

A new inquisitive guitar layer joins the mix, moving towards a grungy bridge featuring head moving beats and metallic riffs, before gravelly desperation sneaks into Davis’ voice, a final glance in the rearview mirror before leaving the past behind.

Reflecting on an ended relationship, Davis brings his distinctive lyrical maturity to ‘Love's Not Enough', reaching insightful conclusions that can hopefully provide some closure, as he states:

"As the title suggests, the song is about the fact that sometimes even the forces of love aren’t strong enough to hold two together."

Unsurprisingly, the band’s previous releases have seen support from US College Radio, National broadcaster IndieXL (Netherlands), Triple J, Double J, Triple J Unearthed, Scenestr, LA On Lock, Backseat Mafia, theMusic, Pilerats, XPress Magazine, Junction Records, RTRFM, FBi Radio, 4ZZZ, 3RRR and more, as well as being nominated for the WAM Rock Song of the Year in 2020. The group have also played coveted support and festival slots including RTRFM flagship event In The Pines, WAMFest and the inaugural WAY WAY WEST Festival.

"Words" is the second single from the upcoming album ”Loud and out of place” due to be released in November 2014. It's About closure in a relationship where the blinds are finally off  revealing the dishonesties of a love relationship — it's a slow grower. 

"I wrote this song with Fredrik Berger (Charli XCX,  Icona pop  et cetera). It was one of those songs that sort of writes itself, the music, melody and lyrics came so quickly that it took us under two hours to have the whole song done. Emotionally it resonates in experiences of previous relationships that entailed a rude awakening into a reality of humiliation and heartache. Leaving the relationship is the only way to preserve the little dignity that is left. I think it is something many of us can sadly relate to, being blinded by love and lust and allowing our partner to get away with much more than we ever thought we could possibly accept.  That said, it is still a song about self empowerment and chosing yourself over a damaged relationship that only brings you down." – Asha Ali

It’s hard to imagine that Juliana Daugherty’s softness and subtlety could materialize amid the tumult of current-day Charlottesville, VA, but every mode of being continues in the people of Charlottesville, as it does elsewhere, despite the impressions headlines might give. Despite the societal ills that dominate our screens, private struggles still exist, and Daugherty’s debut Light gives them palatable, manageable, and satisfying form.

“I wrote this record partly to strip mental illness of its power,” Daugherty says. She adds, “There is nothing useful or beautiful to be gleaned from the experience of depression.” Though this statement seems contrary to the romantic tone of Light, it’s refreshing to hear an artist speak of their own depression with objectivity, unwilling to be charmed by the gloom. Daugherty wields her songcraft like a sword, not a diary to be buried in a drawer.

As one listens, it becomes clear that Light was not a title chosen despite the gravity of its subject matter-- romantic struggle, abject depression, and throbbing vulnerability-- but rather in service of it. Light, so to speak, comes when we give shape to what haunts us.
