Hot on the heels of nosync’s ‘Soundsystem Music’, Plasma Sources is proud to present Beton Brut’s ‘Project Researcher’, a 4-track offering of no nonsense, dancefloor-ready electronics which take influence from experimental club music, grime and musique concrète.

Having previously released standout EPs on CYTE Records, Beton Brut has built a reputation for delivering distinctively sparse and heavy-hitting productions which have garnered support from the likes of Mumdance, LCY and Walton. On ‘Project Researcher’, Beton Brut takes his sound and develops it even further.

In the producer’s own words, the EP is “about materials - raw, straight and to the point”.

’Lighter’ pulses with Beton Brut’s signature blend of grime-influenced bass-weight and snatches of pirate-radio MC chatter. ‘EMCA’ doubles down on this approach, with a more identifiable rhythm sure to keep heads bouncing at peak time.

As an EP, ‘Project Researcher’ feels like the auditory equivalent of observing a chemical process inside a petri-dish. Beton Brut sets himself up as a scientist on this release, meticulously collecting individual samples from the deep corners of YouTube, introducing these into abstracted environments and observing the reaction.

UK-born, Melbourne-based Hedchef creates the kind of sharp, off-kilter club constructions that disorientate and delight the dancefloor in equal measure. Showing discipline to a militant ethos of pushing the envelope, futurism and point-blank rejection of nostalgia, irony and pastiche, Hedchef’s groove-based, breakdown-light arrangements align closer to classic techno and electro than dubstep or garage, whilst his razor-sharp sound design draws from influences closer to drum ‘n’ bass and the UK bass-driven music spectrum to add imaginative, gritty edges to the rolling flow. 

Hedchef’s prolific back catalogue and wide-ranging DJ sets certainly tend to feature dark, heavy and abrasive sounds - but his approach to writing grooves, similarly to if they were guitar riffs or brass sections, brings an almost pop-adjacent catchiness that belies the leftfield, experimental nature of his rhythmic structures and warped sound palettes. 
It’s this intricate musicianship which has seen Hedchef release on acclaimed labels including Scuffed Recordings in London, New York-based Worst Behaviour and Berlin’s International Chrome, with a stacked schedule of releases coming out in 2024 that continue the mission of expanding the boundaries of functional club tools. These tracks can be heard in the sets of some of the world’s most venerated DJs and tastemakers, from Dave Clarke and Anastasia Kristensen to Detroit In Effect, Jensen Interceptor and Solid Blake. Most recently, his collaborations with cross-genre wizard Doctor Jeep have been a staple in the international club circuit.

Following on from years of DJing across Australia and the UK, Hedchef’s first international tour kicks off in mid-August 2024, including dates at highly-regarded dance music institutions in Europe and Asia - Hedchef continues to keep the listener guessing whilst staying rooted firmly on the dancefloor, and his work is set to continue for a long while yet.

"I've always been attracted to deep dubstep because of the way it fills my entire body and clears my mind. I saw this theory that said sub-bass might be an unconscious trigger in our mind - when you're in the womb listening to a heart beating only a few inches away from your head while submerged in amniotic fluid, it would sound exactly like a subwoofer and that's the first sound your brain will ever perceive as it's developing. Maybe that's why bass has such a profound effect on humans, especially when you hear it on a good sound system. Anyways, happy Halloween and hope you enjoy the mix!"

Ahead of his headline appearance under his raw and groove-laden Bakongo moniker at our event with Funky Adjacent on November 23rd (https://ra.co/events/1987058), for this episode of INSIGHTS, I'm joined by Wayne Goodlitt aka Roska, UK Funky royalty and pioneering DJ producer whose unwavering dedication to the genre and incredible output has rightfully earned him legend status. His Roska Kicks & Snares imprint has been a cornerstone of UK Funky for over 15 years, a true constant throughout the peaks and troughs of the genre's popularity, as fresh and vital now as it was back in the late 2000s.

Over the course of this interview, Wayne discusses the influence of soundsystem culture and pirate radio in his early years, the timeline of UK Funky and the peaks and troughs of the genres popularity, the fork in the road between Funky and Grime and the melting pot of other distinctly London sounds that helped forge the genre, as well as the current vanguard of artists and Funky's future. Next, Wayne highlights significant releases from the vast Kicks & Snares back catalogue, discusses other creative channels via his Bakongo alias, before concluding with some favourite Bandcamp picks and spotlighting future projects.
